Happy new comic book day! That happens every Wednesday and there are a couple great all age comic books released each week. This week is great if you’re a Star Wars fan who wants a graphic novel for readers in elementary school and up. Star Wars Adventures is an ongoing series from IDW Publishing and captures the action and fun of a galaxy far away, but keeps the content appropriate for ages seven and up. Most importantly it does this without watering down or babyizing the story. This is a great comic book or graphic novel for libraries too.

Let’s combine the new all-age comic books from last week into this week, shall we? Thanksgiving week was a little skinny and the first week in December is lighter than usual so it’s a great time to visit your local comic book store and see what’s new. Every Tuesday new DC Comic Books are released, while everything else is still released on new comic book day, which is Wednesday. Whatever you’re looking for, there are lots of great options in all age comic books to catch up on.
Those preschool through third-grade readers who want to get off on the right reading foot needs to check out Pirate Stew by Neil Gaiman, with illustrations by Chris Riddell. This is silly, read-along, pirate fun that will introduce kids to an author that they’ll learn to love.
Kids love knock, knock jokes. Smart kids love Doctor Who. Combine the two and you’ve got Doctor Who, Knock, Knock! Who’s There? Joke Book that’ll make those non-Whovians wish they had BBC America, BritBox, or HBO Max. One of the best comic books on the market place is ending its run. Lumberjanes is a fabulous comic book that’ll entertain readers aged 9 and up. It might attract more girl readers than boys simply due to the fact that it takes place at a summer camp for girls. However, the story, action, and humor make this one of the great comic books that anyone will enjoy if they give it a chance.
There are also two Sonic the Hedgehog comics out this week. This series is great for elementary school readers and delivers action with humor and just enough reading to make those younger readers want to read more. In middle through high-school and up is Art of Star Wars Mandalorian. This looks at the concept art behind the hit Disney + show. It’s not a casual book that will be confused with a comic book. The price point is $40 and it’s more of a coffee table book for the Star Wars soul. It’s the art that will be demo friendly to those ages 10 and up, just have them look at it with clean hands.

New comic book day is back and this week it’s in a ‘kind of’ manner. There are a handful of great all age comic books out this week, in addition to a couple graphic novels or trade paperbacks. In comic books those young readers will want to look at Casper’s Spooksville, a very special reprinting of Lumberjanes #1 for only $1, Scooby Doo Where Are You? and more.
In graphic novels, if you have an elementary or middle school girl then you need to check out Phoebe and Her Unicorn’s latest, Camping With Unicorns. This series of graphic novels will mainly appeal to girls, but will cross over to boy readers who allow themselves to get lost in these very funny characters. There’s a sense of timeless, Calvin and Hobbes-esque wonder that the comic strip has. If you haven’t read it online or read one of Simpson’s other books they’re certainly worth a look.

The all age comic books are slowly coming back. I spoke to our local comic book shop owner last week and they said that this week most publishers would get back to shipping books. That’s evident by the fact that Marvel Comics has some new releases and Graphix has great ones also. In the podcast we’ll chat about a Chuchill graphic novel, The Amazing Spider-Man and one of our favorite series of graphic novels, Bird & Squirrel.
The all age comic books aren’t up to their usual volume, but there are some nice ones this week that will attract readers in middle elementary school and up. Cosmo is one of those titles that elementary school libraries need to have. It’s got some great science-fiction action and humor that’s perfect for ages 6-9. Marvel Action Captain Marvel is an outstanding monthly series from IDW Publishing, in conjunction with Marvel Comics. This has all of the action that you’d expect in a great comic book, but is also appropriate for younger readers.
The
Force is with you, that’s what some people said about Star Wars: The Rise of
Skywalker. The
final installment of the Skywalker Star Wars saga is out on digital and will be
available on Blu-Ray March 31. This is the first Star Wars film that our 10
year-old really liked. That’s important to point out because no matter which
side of the fence you sat on for this The Rise of Skywalker it’s a film that
will be entertaining to those in upper elementary through high school.

I hope that Power Rangers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 gets the spotlight that it deserves. This team-up is fabulously entertaining. It combines action, great villains, lots of turtle puns and is one that ages 9 and up will enjoy. The mini-series also gives the Power Rangers a chance to shine. The first three issues in this series were awesome and the fourth one continues the story perfectly. Now here’s a look at all of the all age comic books this week.
The fans. The fans have spoken. The fans approve or don’t approve, fandom is the backbone to many book or movie franchises and their future. Star Wars has certainly seen its share of movement. Some of its films weren’t received well, it was bought by Disney and then some of its films weren’t received well. The Star Wars fandom has its camps of die hard supporters and detractors. Ken Napzok is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on Star Wars and has written Why We Love Star Wars, The Great Moments That Built A Galaxy Far, Far Away.
When The Last Jedi came out I was reluctant to criticize it
because the one before it was so entertaining. It had some built-in good will
that made it relatively critic proof initially. Star Wars: The Rise of
Skywalker doesn’t arrive in movie theaters with that luxury. That’s unfortunate
because the movie tries very hard to succeed. It jams so much content, loose
plot stories and guest stars from previous films that the final third of the
film feels like a talk show saying goodbye as previous guests walk on screen.
