The Danger Girl/G.I. Joe crossover is simple, OK comic middle ground

Back in the day I used to read Danger Girl, when it came out.  It was one of those comics that issued an issue every month or so, semi interesting bad guys and half naked women on every page.  Don’t get me wrong, I do love beautiful women, but there is just something about Danger Girl that reminds me of those lyrics from Barenaked Ladies. Athlete vs. Mathlete by W.C. Mack is great reading for ages 7 and up

My wife normally reads the young adult books.  She was busy with another book so I jumped into Athlete vs. Mathlete.  As the book is aimed at young adults I enlisted an actual young reader to read the book as well. Red She-Hulk 62 is good, consistent, story oriented Hulk

I’ve been reading Hulk for a couple of years now.  At first he was the regular green Hulk, then Thunderbolt Ross (Red Hulk) and now Red She-Hulk.  The good part, from a story telling perspective is that all of them have taken place in the same book.  There was no forced reboot or taking the issues back to #1, they just changed the name of the book to Red She-Hulk.  Continue reading Red She-Hulk 62 is good, consistent, story oriented Hulk

Star Trek: TNG/Doctor Who Assimilation 2, Vol 2 is logical and fun

I am a novice geek in that there a couple touchstone franchises I never got into.  I was a casual Star Trek fan (because, let’s face it Star Wars is overall better) and the only Doctor Who I had ever seen were episodes that aired on PBS in the mid 70’s.  All I remembered of that were bad special effects and a tall man with a big hat a poofy hair.  Continue reading Star Trek: TNG/Doctor Who Assimilation 2, Vol 2 is logical and fun

Odd Duck, a charming graphic novel about friends is great for ages 6+

The title to Odd Duck is appropriate.  This is the odd little story about two ducks, one who is an introvert and her new neighbor who is flamboyant.  The art is soft, rounded, cute and not what you’d think of when you hear the term ‘graphic novel’.  Cartoon book sounds too young.  This is definitely a book, but it’s more like a children’s book, with great illustrations-that anyone over 6 can read and enjoy. Little Dinos Don’t Bite is a great book for bedtime and beyond

A great book to read to a toddler is one that has bright pictures, words in big font and has lots of energy.  The energy is great because it keeps you awake and provides a more entertaining story to the child.  Michael Dahl’s books fit these criteria and are some of the most entertaining books you can read to a crawler and up.    His latest book, Little Dinos Don’t Bite is no exception to his track record as it’s packed with energy, sharp drawings and a story that children can easily relate to. The Superior Spider Man #1 review: vengeful and fresh

So if you haven’t checked in on your friendly neighborhood wall crawler here’s what’s new. In the epic (and overpriced) issue of Amazing Spider Man 700, Doctor Octopus died. This would normally be no big deal, but Doc Oct had created a device that switched Peter Parker’s mind with his own, so when our favorite villain with a bowl cut died, it was actually Peter Parker’s mind. A Dad reads Acting White? Rethinking Race in Post-Racial America

I love to read.  And yes, I know this is a parenting/dad blog, so why did I read a book entitled Acting White?  Rethinking Race in Post-Racial America?  When I was in junior high school I vividly remember some black kids in class making fun of the black kids who answered questions, did homework or studied.  As a tween, the idea that anybody would use that phrase to describe someone made no sense.
