Imaginary Fred is a child’s pretend friend you want to meet again

There is not an “I” and “N” missing from the title for Imaginary Fred. Parents of a certain age will certainly remember a fabulous movie by the name of Drop Dead Fred. That pseudo classic film and Imaginary Fred have their one main named protagonist in common, but the film goes into PG-13 territory while the book is squarely aimed at children aged 4-8.  To be clear, Imaginary Fred is not based on the Rik Mayall character, but being a fan of that film and now this book, brings back memories.

Imaginary Fred is not what you think it is.

Imaginary Fred is real, and very clever for young readers

Book Scavenger is literature worth finding for middle grades and up

The line that separates children’s entertainment from being enjoyed by a wider audience is a fine one indeed. If it goes just a bit too young then only the really young kids will like it, tweens won’t and teens and adults would be bored senseless. Age appropriate content that legitimately crosses up to an older audience is very difficult. That is what makes Book Scavenger so surprising and such a treat to read. For older readers its content is simple, but the story and characters make it so engaging that you want to read it and actively turn the page eager to find out what happens.

Let’s Count Fish! adds up to more than just another toddler number book

Yeah, you need another counting book for your toddler like you need small pieces of LEGO bricks under your bare feet. I think we have four books that help teach the basic numbers. Each book does it differently; some have sentences on the way to telling a story while others show the roman numeral in addition to objects that the kids can count. Let’s Count Fish! is more like the later book, but it does so with such charm you’ll want to read it to your kids just so that you can look at the retro-inspired images.

What’s Your Favorite Animal? is charming-not mandatory Eric Carle

Any parent knows the work of Eric Carle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold 30 million copies since its release in 1969 and his other books attract young readers like a moth to a flame. His distinctive artwork with its multi-layered appearance, simple lessons and vivid colors make things easy for parents. He is one of the 500 pound gorillas in children’s book publishing. In that respect it makes sense that What’s Your Favorite Animal, by Eric Carle and Friends exists. What’s Your Favorite Animal showcases many of the other giants in children’s publishing giving them two pages each to showcase their distinctive artwork, style of humor and writing.

Happy new comic book day! Brace yourself for a brand new Snoopy graphic novel-Where Beagles Dare is a full length story, akin to the classic ones that they turned into half hour television specials. The conclusion of Princeless Be Yourself, Over the Garden Wall #2 is great fantasy, Sonic Universe #80 and more come out this week.

A new mini-series in line with Wild’s End comes out too. Wild’s End Enemy Within #1 (of 4) is a unique melding of WWII and wild farm critters like toads, mice and such. The art that we’ve seen is really amazing and we’ll be giving this book a review later this week.
