New all age comics for Wednesday December 23, 2015

Happy new comic book day! It’s every Wednesday and this week is skinnier than usual, which has its pros and cons. One of the bigger pros is that school is out and you can take the kids to the store with you.  The con would be that there are fewer new single issues to look for, so it’s a great time to look at some back issues or graphic novels if nothing this week tickles your fancy for all age comics.

Mega Man #55, Peanuts # 29 and Wilds End Enemy Within #4 is great for kids 10 and up who are down with something out of the box, intelligent and deeper than the average comic.

If you’re getting caught up on older graphic novels, perhaps for stocking stuffers, may we suggest any of the Regular Show, Lumberjanes or Ghostbusters Get Real. They’re all fabulous for any age, especially those 7 and up. It’s also worth mentioning Terrible Lizard and Planet Gigantic, both are really entertaining, have great art, strong female characters, big action and are worth checking out.

The Boy Who Spoke to the Earth speaks to kids and more #Giveaway

Surfing in the Arctic Circle is not some people’s idea of fun. I would love to go there, do some camping and hiking, but that cold water is good for salmon or whatever other fish live up there.  To nature photographer Chris Burkard that as well as other adventurous places are his office. The Boy Who Spoke to the Earth is a children’s book that he wrote. If you’ve seen his photos then you might expect him to be responsible for the images in the book. However, once you read it you understand why it makes sense that he did the words and David McClellan did the art in this very accessible children’s book.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School, is go-to reading for ages 8 and up

Some constants about 10 year old kids are that they like pizza, cartoons, video games and hanging out with their friends. They’re also huge fans of the Wimpy Kid series. It’s a publishing juggernaut about the life of Greg Heffley, a tween/teen boy who is discovering life and trying to avoid his family.  “All my friends read it, they’ve read all of them” our 13 year old niece told us when I asked her about Wimpy Kid.  Now that we have a young reader in the house I’m realizing just how good-and impactful the Wimpy Kid books are for that age. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School is no exception, I read the book- it’s fabulous and the crowd at our school’s Scholastic book fair purchased every copy in stock.

New All Age Comic Books for Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Sonic The Hedgehog #278 is going on hiatus after this issue, not cancelled, just taking a break. Batman ’66 #29 is officially cancelled though and this is the next to last issue.

Usagi Yojimbo is the black and white gem of a comic that you need to be reading if you like ninja rabbits in feudal Japan. The art is awesome and the story is to the point, yet manages to tell lots. There are also two new Star Wars publications out this week. I suspect that we’ll be repeating that last sentence a couple times during the next month. One would almost say, we’ll be full of them.

The links will take you to TFAW, where you’ll save 20% on your comic purchases. The music on the podcast is from Cousin Silas/Black Hill, some wondrous minimal stuff that I found over at Free Music Archive.

And Then it Rained on Malcolm, needs more sunshine

And Then it Rained on Malcolm is about a young boy who wants to play, but it’s raining. It rains on him within the first four pages, so if you’re thinking that the title of the book leads up to a grand finale, it doesn’t. If anything, that’s what makes And Then it Rained on Malcolm so frustrating. The illustrations in the book are huge, taking up every square inch in this already massive book-this is one of the great qualifiers for an entertaining children’s book.

Voyagers is a multi-format book series that middle schoolers will love

Hey, we were provided with samples for review. Prizes for the #Giveaway are done by Random House Children’s Books. When is a book not a book? It sounds like that dopey riddle on the back of a bubble gum wrapper, the answer was always “when he turns into a store”; but in this case it’s a book that open up to more options.  Voyagers is a book series that has a sister app with quizzes, games and activities on smart devices. It’s a logical extension of the publishing world that wouldn’t add up to much if it weren’t entertaining or well done.

Voyagers is a six-book series that puts Earth in an emergency crisis with all of its energy drying out within the next 100 years. The only solution is for a group of space explorers, who are under 12 years old to go to six different planets to look for the power elements that could save the planet. Eight kids are competing for 4 positions on the ship that will take them on the trip. They compete in a training program where their puzzle skills, leadership and team work are all tested in order to ensure that the best candidates are chosen.

New all age comic books for Wednesday, November 4, 2015

And suddenly, it’s November. The new all age comic books might have fewer ghosts this week, but there are still lots of new titles to keep readers of all ages interested. One of the books that we’re looking forward to this week is actually, a book. Alien Next Door is a humor book that shows Alien on Earth adapting to life, cleaning house, taking care of Jonesy and other mundane things. There’s nothing graphic about this book, but its humor might be too dry for kids to fully understand.

Back to the Future #2 (of 4), Bat Mite #6 (of 6), Hero Cats #8, Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy #2, Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard Volume 3, Regular Show #29, a couple Walt Disney Characters, Grandpa Simpson and much more come out this week.

New all age comic books for Wednesday, November 4, 2015

If you picked up any of the comic books for Halloween Comicfest you have until Tuesday, November 10th at 11:59PM ET to enter. You can win cash to spend at your local comic book store. This is great because you probably would’ve spent the cash there anyway.

The links will take you to TFAW, where you’ll save up to 20% on your orders through that link. The music on the podcast is provided by Gorowski, it’s some groovy chill-out, techno that I found at Free Music Archive.

Usagi Yojimbo#149 is the ninja, all ages anthropomorphic comic you need to read

If you listened to our podcast on the new all age comics this week then you know that we love Usagi Yojimbo. Even based on its description it’s a comic that appeals to us and anyone who is looking for a fresh, well written and perfectly drawn comic that appeals to all ages. A ninja ronin rabbit travels the country where he encounters adventure, friends and other anthropomorphic ninjas intent on doing their thing. Issue #149 of Usagi Yojimbo came out this week and I wanted to purchase it so that I can remind myself-and explain to you how much fun comics can be to all ages.
