Lessons learned on baby proofing the outlets

I’m cheap by nature and when we were shopping for outlet covers there didn’t seem to be any difference.  As with all things baby and parenting we’ve discovered better options than what we first tried.

As this is our first child we didn’t know how naturally attracted children are to electrical outlets.  Granted ours have the classic 90s gold covering, so maybe our child is just going up closer to get a look at his baby mug.  Never use gold appliances in plumbing or with your outlet covers.  We ran into this problem when we had to switch out a shower head as there, thankfully aren’t many options for people with gold plumbing.  Sometimes I feel like we live in the home of a pseudo successful suburban rapper, Continue reading Lessons learned on baby proofing the outlets

Daddy Mojo gets a hernia

This blog post is brought to you by the word “Pain”.

Nine years ago I was single with no children and had a hernia which caused me inconvenience and discomfort.  A couple weeks ago I noticed a bulge in my lower stomach and suspected that my old friend was rearing its’ head again.  Then, the bulge disappeared overnight.  Ha, ha sucker fake hernia I’m better than you!  Continue reading Daddy Mojo gets a hernia

The world’s best laundry tip for today’s modern father

Being a stay at home dad I try not adhere to the stereotype that guys are messier than women.  That stereotype was difficult for me not to define because; prior to marriage and becoming a father I was a filthy, filthy man.  One area that was especially challenging to me was laundry.  I’ll spare you the details, but suffice it to say the fact that I’m proactive on the families’ laundry and can offer good advice on it is an underdog story for the ages. Death of a (kid) salesman

Recently a local junior high school kid from the neighborhood knocked on our door.  He was selling something for glee club and asked if I would help support them.  Sure thing kid, I watch Glee, I’m down with your creative vocal talents, let’s see this catalogue of nuts, food or chocolate.

Either this club had huge overhead or the school hadn’t shopped around for efficient fundraisers because the lowest price item was $13. Yup, the items peaked at $45 and started at a Stromboli that our budding vocalist assured me was very good.  Continue reading Death of a (kid) salesman

A dad reviews the ads for ‘Life As We Know It’

October is a fabulous time of the year.  Every weekend has beautiful weather, there are numerous festivals and it’s great just to open the windows, nap or read.  With all of these pleasant activities it sure would take something magical to drag me out to the movie theatre.

Thankfully Life As We Know It seems to have nothing redeeming to drag the common dad away from relaxing at home.

I was thumbing through a magazine and saw this advertisement for the movie. Continue reading A dad reviews the ads for ‘Life As We Know It’

An open letter to Parenting Magazine

Dear Parenting Magazine, I like your publication and we receive it at the Mojo house.  After a year of reading it and getting some dandy ideas on meals that I can cook, development tips and relationship advice I realized that you have almost no pictures of dads in your magazine.

That’s cool.  I don’t know your demographics, Continue reading An open letter to Parenting Magazine

Fathers, buy your diaper bags carefully

When we were looking for a diaper bag my wife insisted that it be something that I’m comfortable with carrying, both in appearance and feel.  As usual, my wife was correct and also had a bit of foresight by knowing that I tend not to use things that I don’t like.

It’s not something I’d admit to in mixed company, but one of the unforeseen advantages of having a baby is being able to carry around the diaper bag.  Continue reading Fathers, buy your diaper bags carefully

Handmade toys, sock monkeys and crafty dads

I like toys that thud in a wooden way.  This is American Craft Week and nice wooden handmade blocks or trains are a great way to shape a childs imagination.   Alternately I’m a big fan of the sock monkey, another handmade toy that makes adults smile and kids happy.
