Living life like it’s Thanksgiving Day with my New Years Resolutions

Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day are bookend holidays.  You’ve got major religious holidays between them and all sorts of retail sales, family obligations and social events jammed in too.   The bookend dates, and the New Years Resolutions that follow, highlight things that we could and in some cases should do every day.  However we’ve become conditioned to think that if it doesn’t happen on that day then you have to put it off until that date next year in order to start again.

Pity the lawyers that don’t earn enough for a house husband

Time magazine had an article recently on super achieving moms on Wall Street and their stay-at-home husbands.  The same author did a follow up piece on her blog that broke it down even further about being a house husband to a power mom on Wall Street.    Her conclusion and the comments  on the Time website offer insight into both sides.  They also provide a compelling argument for tort reform and a good excuse to lovingly smack any lawyer who thinks that they don’t earn enough money.

A chat with Mike von Grey, father of indie/alt/folk rock group von Grey

As a dad to two young boys I imagine how difficult it must be to be a dad to teenage girls.  But what if you were the father to four teenagers, all of whom were in a band?  And then that band started getting phone calls from Sarah McLaughlin to open up for her on concert, play SXSW, Conan, Letterman, Rock Center on NBC and have their debut EP land in the top 10 on iTunes?  Which is more difficult, how to handle four teenage girls or how to manage an up and coming folk/rock group with bookings all across the country and interviews with major publications?

How to make daylight savings time easier on small children

Parents to children know that something strange happens to them on Daylight Savings Time. Specifically in the fall when folks in the United States are coming off Daylight Savings Time, ie, losing an hour, young children may behave differently. Differently, waking up at odd times, being crabby or otherwise behaving unlike the angels that they normally are.

Is it wrong that I’m glad our oldest son likes blue and not pink?

The other day we were shopping and I asked our 4 year old what bubble bath he wanted.  I showed him two bottles.  “The pink one is for girls”, he said.  I agreed with him, but didn’t say anything because pink is for girls, as we walked towards the feminine product to purchase tampons for my wife. In defense of a hot mom on Facebook and fat children in England

The other day I read this great article in The Daily Mail.  It was written by a health professional at a weight management center, or centre as he would write.  This morning I was greeted with the obvious bait link of a headline, “Hot Mom on Facebook Defends Herself”.  That story was not what I thought it would be, but it was also a great read about motivation, exercise and parenting.  I simply combined the two stories in my head to come up with the train wreck of a headline: In Defense of a hot mom on Facebook and fat children in England.

Top takeaways from attending the Type A Parent Conference

I attended the Type A Parent Conference last week.  In the past I’ve attended a handful of social media conferences.  They’re a balance of freebies, networking and seminars where you probably won’t learn anything.  At one such conference I asked someone, “what’s the best conference you’ve been to?”  They replied Type A Parent Conference because it helped get them to the next level.  Fast forward a couple of years and I know why they said what they did.

Growing Up Online Free eBook & The Lorax Blu-ray Giveaway

As a parent the internet and social media are a bit intimidating.  I’m glad that our boys are young enough so that I can get ahead of it, if just barely.  I know that it changes quickly and what’s cool is suddenly not.  However I hope that by dad having some foothold in social media I’ll be able to assist and ward off some troubles for them.  Much like the internet makes activists slacktivists it also makes cyber-bullying much easier to do.
