Win a pair of ticket to the Death Wish sneak preview in Atlanta

To some, Bruce Willis is finally playing the character that they have been waiting for him to portray. Paul Kersey, the titular character in the classic movie series Death Wish is back, with a shaven head and more of a grin than you last saw the character in Death Wish 4: The Crackdown. When that film came out in 1987 it was a creaky franchise that had countless puns about its aging character. The year after that a little film called Die Hard came out that changed the landscape of action films. The sneak preview is Wednesday, February 28 in Atlanta at Atlantic Station. The giveaway ends Tuesday, February 27 at 9 PM. We’ll email the tickets to the winners that night. To enter just leave a comment on this post or on the YouTube video.

It was also about that time of year that the vengeance sub-genre of films faded away. Clint Eastwood owned that genre for years and the Paul Kersey character is indeed Dirty Harry’s kindred, non-law enforcement kindred spirit.  When you see Death Wish you will see lots of violence, bad guys getting their cumupins and several well placed puns.

Death Wish is back with Eli Roth taking control of the camera and Chicago acting as the template for Willis to enact revenge. This film is rated R for bloody violence and language.  The sneak preview for Death Wish in Atlanta is Wednesday, February 28 and we’re giving away three pairs of passes.  To enter this Death Wish giveaway, just leave a comment below or in the YouTube video.

Enter to win a copy of The Defiant Ones on Blu-ray DVD

It’s a little ironic that The Defiant Ones starts out near the end of the story. The multi-billion dollar deal between Apple and Beats by Dre has been finalized, but not made public. Jimmy Iovine learns from Puff Daddy that reports of the deal are being bragged about on Facebook, which could scuttle the entire transaction. That was 2014, but the road leading up that moment is the true story of The Defiant Ones, which has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Film. It is intended for mature audiences and contains content that is not rated.

Thor Ragnarok, a fun, solid time at the cinema that also shakes it up

For personal entertainment I grade superhero films on a curve. As a film for other people we grade them as most folks would determine the enjoyment of the movie. That’s important to admit, especially when you’re talking about this genre of films. Thor Ragnarok enters this arena, both literally and figuratively as an example whose predecessors were graded on such a curve. Characters won’t die, heroes don’t change and their movies have an all too familiar pattern about them. That’s a shame because the medium that brought forth these stories; comic books has given people memories-or at least the template to have stories and characters that are fun, adventurous and a joy to escape with.

Goodbye Christopher Robin is solid movie entertainment for adults

It feels odd to say that Goodbye Christopher Robin is a movie that’s best enjoyed by adults; after all, Christopher Robin is the linchpin in Winnie the Pooh. That is true, but this film is about A.A. Milne, the author of Winnie the Pooh and how the character that generations came to love actually happened.  If you’re a fan of Winnie the Pooh, the bear-and only the bear, then this film is not your cup of tea. However, if you’re looking for an interesting story about the creator of Kanga, Roo and the rest of the crew in Hundred Acre Wood then you’ll fall into Goodbye Christopher Robin without effort.

Before watching the film my knowledge about A.A. Milne, the author and any events that led up to the creation of Winnie the Pooh was nonexistent. (mild spoilers below)

LEGO Ninjago, the strangest and most grounded brick flick yet

In 1989 Faith No More released The Real Thing, an Epic, tour de force album that had many hit singles and propelled the band out of cult status to mainstream success. Their next LP (ask you parents what that is kids) was Angel Dust.  It was a great album that was drastically different, but still had the quality of its previous release. To an extent, LEGO Ninjago is the LEGO movie brand equivalent of Angel Dust. Aspects of the film are so different, weird and utterly out there that at times the film has more in common with an Asian kaiju movie.

Mild spoilers follow…..

Tales of the TMNT Wanted: Bebop & Rocksteady is retro, mash up gold

I can’t believe that they sent out videos that had the wrong show. When you start watching Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wanted: Bebop & Rocksteady it looks like a bad copy of the original show. The DVD is supposedly new and features the current TMNT, however, the first things you see when the video starts are the old school turtles from the 80’s. The turtles are in a massive sewer following Shredder, Krang, Bebop & Rocksteady, who are also the 1980’s version.

Captain Underpants, First Epic Movie-is one that families need this summer

Captain Underpants was the first book series that our now 7 year old loved. We bought one of the books on a whim and he, with our assistance, devoured it within 24 hours. It’s similar to another massively popular, wimpy book series that elementary to early middle school kids absolutely love. Both franchises would seem to be tailor made for the movie screen. There have been four attempts at a Wimpy Kid film and while each one has made a profit, they didn’t earn much love from the audience. Our kids have always liked Captain Underpants more and it’s because of that fact that I was nervous about seeing it.

‘Please don’t screw it up’, I thought to myself as we entered the theater. Ten minutes into the film it was obvious that they didn’t screw it up as our 7 year old was laughing more than I had ever seen him. He was doubled over in his seat, roaring with laughter and wiping his eyes and pointing at the screen. The person on the other side of him was looking over and enjoying his enjoyment of the film as much as they were.
