Dad spends a night in the mancave: Killer Elite

Some say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result.  If that’s the case then I’m crazy for Jason Statham.  I watch his movies and most of them since The Transporter have been bad.  Just when I was about to lump Statham in a pile with all my old JCVD tapes he goes out and stars in a great movie for him.  Continue reading Dad spends a night in the mancave: Killer Elite

John Carter is escapist, sci-fi fun that’s good for the family

From the preview that I saw I had already written the review to John Carter in my mind.  I had heard the negative hype on the movie and some of the trailers didn’t look engaging.  Actually going to ‘see’ the movie was kind of an afterthought and a good excuse to get me out of the house.  About ¼ of the way through John Carter I was eating crow, fully engrossed in the film and loving every minute of it. Act of Valor is an enjoyable, unique, taut action movie

Act of Valor is an action film that features active duty Navy SEALs.  I had been following the previews and press for the film ever since I heard about its production.  Yeah, it could be a gimmicky thing to cast real Navy SEALs instead of actors, but the action that they showed in the trailers looked very tight.  While not perfect, Act of Valor was entertaining and authentic. The Secret World of Arrietty is anime that kids will love

The Secret World of Arrietty is presented by Disney, but it doesn’t look anything like a Disney film.  When we got in the theater my friend let me know that it was Anime and not the traditional animation I was accustomed to.  Anime is a type of animation where the eyes are bigger, rounder and have that tell-tale half moon white bit in the pupil of every character.  Continue reading The Secret World of Arrietty is anime that kids will love

Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I love my wife.   Having said that, it’s good to watch a movie when she’s not around; no judgments- just me, beer, cats on the sofa and dogs by the fireplace.  On this occasion I finally got around to watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Continue reading Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Mission Impossible 4 in IMAX is large and in charge action fun

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the 4th entry in the franchise and easily the most entertaining out of all of them.  The movie takes advantage of the picturesque scenery in Moscow, Dubai and Mumbai to all but require watching the film in IMAX.  I saw the film in IMAX and the difference in the scenes shot in IMAX and those that weren’t are like comparing an LP to an MP3 file. Dad spends a night in the mancave: Captain America

Last year I momentarily got my boxers in a bunch because Captain America was not going to be filmed in the U.S.  The irony of not filming a movie called Captain America not in his namesake could only be distracted by a pregnant wife, crawling baby and work.   Thankfully all three of those things happened to make me realize I didn’t have time to think about where some movie would be filmed.  Continue reading Dad spends a night in the mancave: Captain America

The Muppets fit like a green hand puppet

I didn’t really like The Muppets as a child.  It aired from ’76 to ’81 and I was too into The Six Million Dollar Man or thought that The Muppets were just for little kids.  However, my mother loved The Muppets and would watch them every week.  Because of that, I do have some memories of watching Pigs in Space and other Muppet skits during Steve Austin’s commercial breaks. Continue reading The Muppets fit like a green hand puppet
