An aunt and 3 fans review One Direction: This Is Us

I’m honest. If I wasn’t driving my nieces – ages 8, 10 and 12 – to the movie, I wouldn’t have gone. I don’t have anything against One Direction (I was a fan of NKOTB in 6th grade too!) but I’m in my twenties now (read: 37). However, seeing my nieces see One Direction: This Is Us was a lot of fun. Elysium: moments of excellence, but empty at the same time

Elysium is the follow up movie by Neill Blomkamp who directed the incredible District 9.  Elysium is not a sequel to District 9, but does have some of the same themes.  The rigid class system, divide between rich and poor and spectacularly sublime special effects are all present in both films.  Elysium has high aspirations and does go higher than most sci-fi films; but doesn’t reach ‘classic’ status because of the frequent moments that it takes its foot off of the accelerator.  Continue reading Elysium: moments of excellence, but empty at the same time

Disney’s Planes aims low and hits the safe target

Disney’s Planes is the story of a crop duster that desperately wants to be a racing plane.  It was produced by Disney Toon Studios and originally meant to go straight to DVD.  Don’t let the fact that it was intended to by-pass theaters put you off from seeing it.  Disney’s Planes makes it clear that this is from the world of Cars.  There are hints of the wonder and enjoyment from that first movie, but the soul of Planes is strictly with its sequel.    Continue reading Disney’s Planes aims low and hits the safe target

The Smurfs 2 is smurftastic fun for the demographic it’s aiming for

The Smurfs 2 is the sequel to The Smurfs from 2011.  Smurfs, if you’re from Belgium or didn’t know, are small blue creatures that are generally happy, sing lots and use ‘smurf’ as an adjective for just about everything.  It’s a live action movie with Smurfs running around Paris looking for Gargamel and his two gray helper pseudo smurfs called ‘the naughties’. The Conjuring, very scary thrills-and a great film

Rare are scary films that are good.  More often than not it’s just violence, creative (sick) ways to murder and most recently torture porn.  The “Saw” type movies that were popular in the mid 00’s weren’t really scary, just had moments of tension.  The “found footage” movies that were trendy after that weren’t scary either, just mildly surprising.  The Conjuring is a throwback movie that is genuinely scary-without being bloody, has strong characters and succeeds in going past the genre and actually being a great film.    Continue reading The Conjuring, very scary thrills-and a great film

Pacific Rim: quality film plus an old soul with monsters & robots

Pacific Rim is a movie that I didn’t want to like.  “Hurry up and make HellBoy 3 Gulliermo Del Toro, why are you messing around with Pacific Rim?”, my inner fanboy said a couple years ago.  Now that I’ve seen Pacific Rim I’m eating my words to an extent because it is great fun, still has aspects of what makes all of Del Toro’s movies great, except with a much bigger budget. Monsters University is lightweight, predictable fun kids will enjoy

That title isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement, is it?  Monsters University is the prequel to Monsters, Inc. which was released in 2001.  The cynic in me says that if it takes 12 years for a sequel/prequel to come out then the audience isn’t really there to support the movie.  Continue reading Monsters University is lightweight, predictable fun kids will enjoy
