March Madness is almost over. It’s almost over for the basketball games. For the microbes that exist around us, try to make us sick or are otherwise disgusting it’s just another day. Giant Microbes is having their own Final 4 that puts bad against worse in a fun, educational and health conscious way for any age to learn.
The Sandwich Generation persists. School has started, the kids keep on growing and our medical knowledge and health sensibilities have expanded beyond our wildest expectations. In the past couple of months I’ve learned that gangrene is not uncommon, how to use left femoral bypass fluently, talk about various types of hematomas and that amputations are not a dirty word. It was the summer of health in our little corner of the sandwich generation and our boys were along for most of the ride.
I partnered with Life of Dad and Beautyrestfor this campaign, but my opinions are my own. Enjoy it while you can. That’s what many people joking said about sleep before we had children. It was a glib comment for sure, but it was true and more accurate when the kids are younger. Now that our kids are marginally older (see: out of diapers and the crib) our night time sleep habits have somewhat returned to normal. That fact has been brought to the forefront since we started using the Beautyrest Sleeptracker Monitor.
To the new parents I say to them, enjoy those naps and relish that REM sleep. Rapid Eye Movement, I remember an interview from the early 80’s from Michael Stipe when he said that he knew REM made it big time when people stopped asking him what the band’s name stood for. For the first couple of years some parents might also forget what REM stands for.
“Mommy, now I have a water bottle just like you” is what our 7 year old said. It made her feel all warm and fuzzy because it was an identifying and bonding moment that those two shared. For us it was more about super hero street cred. His Nalgene Captain America bottle from the Marvel Collection can accommodate 32 ounces of water for those hikes, bike trips or simply playing in the back yard.
When I was a kid finding cool Marvel stuff was challenging. There was this one kid who always seemed to have cool Marvel clothing, but I suspect his parents were on the Comic Con curve before the rest of us. Uphill both ways, that’s the lesson for our children.
This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #CoachesvsCancer #CollectiveBias. Our oldest son is very much like me when I was his age in that basketball is his go-to sport. He’s 7, not particularly good at the sport, but absolutely loves playing it and has requested that mom and I not watch any of his games. One aspect of my life that I hope he doesn’t follow me in is a Cancer diagnosis. This February, college basketball teams are joining forces with the American Cancer Society. They’re tossing in some team spirit, raising money for every 3-point shot scored and asking fans of the teams to step up in Coaches Vs. Cancer!
My treatment was far simpler than the path of some survivors. I consider myself quite lucky. The thing about Cancer is it’s a paradigm shift that makes that cliché boardroom term appropriate in a real-world setting. Even after you beat it, the specter of its presence leaves a mark on you in some manner. It could be the bi-annual trips to the doctor or those photos that were taken as you being prepared for surgery. However, those photos or that doctor visit means that you beat it, so go on and put that feather in your cap.
Now that the home stretch of the college basketball season is within sight Coaches Vs. Cancer provides fans of the 3-pointer in college hoops, as well as, those that want to support American Cancer Society and their research. Any way you look at it, this is a win/win.
If you’re a basketball fan all you have to do is visit Coaches Vs. Cancer, go ahead, pledge now! From there you can find your favorite team, check out the conference rivalries and decide who you’d like to support. Once you pick your team just go to their page where you’ll see how much money they’ve set up as a campaign goal. Then decide whether you’d like to make a pledge for each 3-pointer made for the month or contribute a one-time flat donation. For you folks invested in conference rivalries, the ACC is dominating everyone right now. Much like their basketball games, the PAC-12 teams are but a faint glimmer in Wake Forrest’s rear view mirror.
As you look at each team you’ll see how much money they’re raising with each 3-pointer. The money that you donate is still the same, but the more people that join into the campaign makes each long shot from downtown worth more.
Coaches Vs. Cancer works. Since 1993 it’s raised over $100 million for American Cancer Society. As of this writing over 2900 3-pointers have been made with over $65,000 pledged to help defeat something that every team and everybody can team up against.
Join Your Team. Make a Pledge. Beat Cancer. Now are you going to jump into the team/conference rivalry or make a general donation to help waylay Cancer? Either way you’ve got a survivor out there who thanks you and a person in the future who will need the research that your money will provide. For more information please visit Coaches Vs. Cancer.
This is a sponsored post. All thoughts are our own. Three years ago I put off seeing a doctor because of the hassles and issues involving the process. When I finally saw them, they snipped, sampled, rushed it off to a lab and called me less than 48 hours later to let me know I had Melanoma. Well, hello Wednesday. It was caught early, but let that be a lesson that burying your head or saying that you’re too busy because it only hurts you. Healthcare education has evolved and UnitedHealthcare has a couple of options to make learning about it much more interesting.
This post is brought to you by Unstuck Life Courses and The Motherhood. All opinions are mine. It’s a myth that the ostrich sticks their head in the sand. In reality they’ve just got small heads, dig holes in the dirt to place their eggs and sometimes have to check on them. However, people do not have that excuse. I do not have that excuse. But ignoring things or hoping that they’ll merely pass over is something that I do often. Sure we’ll come back to the task, but that interim has a cost in one way or another. It could be a financial loss because I can’t find something, a reputation decrease or simply an eyesore in the things that I don’t clean up. Knowing that, as well as my personal weaknesses, I agreed to try Unstuck Life Courses.
Unstuck Life Courses are a series of videos, exercises and worksheets designed to help folks improve their lives.
Yeah, that’s about where I tuned out too. I don’t need help, I just this-or-that or that one thing that will assist me with this. Thank you very much.
Here’s the thing though about life and the moments where you get stuck. For me now it’s the clutter, both online and off that jams me up. A genius keeps a messy desk, but mine was more akin to press release graveyard than ‘creative-at-work’. Our stuck moments; those triggers that we can’t seem to get past will change as we get older or work past them.
Hey, we’re an Ambassador for Denny’s and were compensated for this post. All thoughts, even the fluffy ones, are our own. My wife sometimes makes pancakes on the weekends and the boys love them. And they are good-but it turns out that many visitors to Denny’s had the same thoughts. 44% of folks who visited Denny’s liked their pancakes, but thought that the best pancakes were the ones that they made at home. With the gauntlet thrown, the chefs at Denny’s went back to the kitchen and came out with a pancake that is 50% fluffier.
The new recipe has fresh buttermilk, flour, vanilla and eggs. Sure that’s close the same as the recipe you’re using at home, but (no offense to my wife) these are much fluffier. Does a fluffy pancake equal a tasty pancake? The taste aspect you’ll just have to trust me on, however, the size aspect we have proof.
