Our wheelhouse has a litmus test called the Christmas Music (or Movie) test. In brief, people are more forgiving, and artists are more apt to create projects when they are centered around Christmas. The cynic says that it’s a built-in holiday audience that will create traditions around a song or a movie. The artists will say with a straight face that they’ve always loved the holiday and are out to entertain the kids. There are some songs or movies that are wonderful regardless of their Santa inclusion and those creations pass the Christmas Movie (or music) test. Red One is a Christmas movie, does it pass this test?

Jungle Cruise control to a great first act and overall fun, but flawed film
There are many reasons why people could love or dislike Jungle Cruise. It stars Dwayne Johnson! It’s based on a theme park ride. It’s based on a theme park ride! Your negative reasons for liking it could easily be someone else’s reason for enjoying it. As a former WDW park employee, I can see many things to love about Jungle Cruise. The first act is jammed with subtle, meta winks to the audience as the film blurs between movie and self-realization that its premise is an audio-animatronic ride based on puns and adventure. That same period of the film is also wildly entertaining and will remind older movie fans of Raiders and Romancing the Stone.
As the film goes on, it will crib too much from those films, but more on that in a moment.
Jungle Cruise, we can’t really dislike you, but we wanted moreWin a copy of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw on DVD
Hitting DVD on November 5 is Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. This brings fan favorites from Fast & Furious, Hobbs, the take-no-guff policeman and Deckard Shaw, the best baddie in the series, and puts them in their own film. In Hobbs & Shaw they’re forced to team up to take down a cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton Lorr, played by Idris Elba. As if the cast couldn’t get any cooler, toss in Vanessa Kirby who plays Shaw’s sister. You’ll recognize Kirby from Mission Impossible: Fallout and The Crown. She steals scenes in everything she’s in.
Hobbs & Shaw is rated PG-13 for prolonged action sequences, suggestive material and some strong language. If you’re looking for a fast paced, action film that delivers on what you think it should this is it. It’s got an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A-“ on CinemaScore. Bonus: this combo pack of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw has 80 minutes of never-before-seen bonus content, an alternate ending, making-of, bloopers and more.
