We recently removed all of the wallpaper in our laundry room and removed a large, unsightly metal shelving unit at the same time. In doing this it left us with absolutely no area to put spray bottles or other things needed in the laundry room. If you want to install a shelf, it’s DIY 101, but because we’ve previously done it incorrectly, it warrants pointing out a couple of things.

Free Beneficial Garden Bug Class this weekend at Pike Nursery
We love our garden, even though we don’t know everything about it and often lose more than half of our tomatoes, we love it. There are also blueberries, raspberries and a couple other edibles in there, but their loss is usually greater than 50%. Bugs can help me with this and this weekend Pike Nurseries is having a free class to educate folks about the good bugs that can help our gardens.

Naptime DIY: How to replace a garbage disposal
You really appreciate the grinding noise of your garbage disposal when it’s not working. The low ‘hmmmmmmm’ that it makes when the blades don’t turn are frustrating. Once you’ve determined that it needs to be switched out, just how easy is it to replace a garbage disposal? We were hesitant to do it ourselves, but several of our neighbors said that it was a simple task and sure enough it was, but here are some things that helped us.

American #DreamBuilders $50 @Lowes gift card from @NBCDreambuilder
I’m a DIY guy. I also know my limitations. That deck that I build 10 years ago? Yeah, I should’ve had someone else do that. The deck is still strong, but it’s not the deck that I wanted. It was then that I learned my limitations. Our home is great and there are changes that I’d like, but they’re in a line of things to do-for now. American Dream Builders is a new show on NBC and they’re giving away lots of cash, services from Lowes and a consultation from the winner of the show.

Archimedes would’ve been proud of me, but even after doing that, the toilet still used over 2.5 gallons of water each time it flushed. Our new house has better toilets that use less water, but they have just been lapped by the Delta Corrente Toilet. Continue reading A toilet that uses less water: the Delta Corrente Toilet review

Naptime DIY: Return of the Stinkhorn Mushrooms
Last summer stinkhorn mushrooms invaded our garden. Stinkhorn mushrooms are phallic shaped mushrooms that smell like rotting flesh. We killed them once, they came back and then, mercifully, winter came and killed everything in the garden. We saw traces of them a couple weeks ago and chose not to write about it. However, something happened that was so stealthy and insidious that it merits another mention. Continue reading Naptime DIY: Return of the Stinkhorn Mushrooms
Naptime DIY: What is that stain on my ceiling?
A stain on the ceiling means water leaked down or a soda bottle exploded up. While neither one is pleasant, the water stain leaking down is much more problematic. Sometimes though, all is not as it appears in home improvement. Recently we had a water stain that would’ve taken 10 minutes to fix, had I listened to my inner voice or read this post.
