Stuffed Into Darkness, perfect scares, adventure and friends for 9 and up

It can be a dicey thing when you read the second book in a series without reading the first. In a way the party has already started, you won’t know the characters, setting, or how the previous entry ended. What if it ended on a cliffhanger and you’re immediately thrust headlong into a series of events that leave you confused? Then there’s the other side of the coin where you jump into a book series that picks up as its own stand-alone story but also makes you want to read the other books involving the characters or story. Stuffed Into Darkness easily falls into that second category. It starts with a short prologue that is in a very dark place. Strange named creatures are speaking in phrases, they’re angry, planning some sort of grand attack, and are intent on causing pain. If this four-page prologue were colored it would be black, with orange, blue, and red highlights to draw attention to the chaos want to see happen, much like the cover of the book.

Don’t worry if you didn’t read Stuffed, as Stuffed Into Darkness is a hoot that will leave you looking for the first book to see how the journey started.

Disney Block continues the Peskimo charm, this time with pixie dust

Alphablock and Countablock, released in 2013 and 2014, have taught tens of thousands of children their alphabet or how to count. Our family is certainly in that group, as both boys learned their basics from them. Those books are part of the Abrams Block Book series and since then, they’ve expanded to fun, entertainment topics, as well as, the educational building blocks of the English language. Disney Block, Magical Moments For Fans of Every Age is an Abrams Block Book that takes the format of these books and captures 25 moments from classic Walt Disney films.

All age comic books for June 10

It’s new comic book day and there are only a couple things for young readers this week. Disney people will love Moana: The Story of the Movie in Comics as well as, Disney Princess: Follow Your Heart. DC Comics has Batman: The Adventures Continue, this is a six issue mini-series and the first issue is here now. If you loved Batman: The Animated Series then this will be right up your alley. That comic book was an awesome all age comic book that had wit, action and Batman charm, plus it was great for young readers.

If you’ve looking for something new this week check out Science Comics at your local comic book store. These graphic novels are on :01 First Second and present science or  non-fiction topics in ways that are educational and fun for those in upper elementary and up.

All age comic books for November 20

This week in all age comic books is skinnier than most weeks, but there are still a couple great releases. For example, Disney, The Little Mermaid has its second issue out this week. If you have a child who is in early elementary school and up they’ll love this. It’s an especially good fit if they’ve just seen the film on Disney + and want to read a new story about her. Middle school readers will love Science Comics: Skyscrapers and Ben 10: Mecha Madness, a new graphic novel featuring this excellent character.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, an empty movie protected by Kevlar

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has a moment late in the film where it almost redeems itself. It’s a hook that, had left it would in place would’ve made for a more satisfying film. Alas, a couple of minutes after the twist it resumes its jumbled, bloated course. Mistress of Evil feels like the seedling of a Disney princess film, but then forces in some Lord of the Rings action and end battle sequence that’s looking for an Avenger. Our 8 year-old, who is able to sit through two-hour films, was squirming 45 minutes into this one and it only got worse (for all of us).

Toy Story 4 is easily one of the most anticipated films of 2019.  Forky is just the character that’s needed right now. It’s true to the way that kids play. Any parent or child will attest to the fact that there is always one homemade toy that manages to work its way into the inner circle of the toy coven. The sneak preview of Toy Story 4 is happening Tuesday, June 18.
