Squirrel King Craft Kits, glue-free, eco friendly crafts for 6 and up

Call it an entry paper offering to origami. Squirrel King Craft Kits are a series of crafts that don’t require any glue and create something whimsical. The end goal is permanent because you’re using stickers, so bend and stick carefully. However, for children (mainly girls in this case) who want to create something with their hands in a truly organic way, this is the ticket.

The Summer Academy Camps at UGA, real fun for middle and high students

We were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own and education rocks. Fractals are not something that Jim Henson created in the 80’s. Our 6 year old just started learning about fractals. I’ve been calling a fractal a Rorschach Test for ages, so his kindergarten teacher just taught me something too.   Summer camp has come a long way since I was a kid also. Now summer camps teach real skills that kids can apply to subjects they’re curious about or things that they want to become; a great example of these are the Summer Academy Camps at UGA.

Norm of the North review-familiar to adults but kids will like it

On the surface there isn’t much going for Norm of the North. Its theatrical release date is the middle of January, the traditional dumping ground for sub-par family films. The film was originally supposed to go straight to video and the plot goes over grounds that are fodder for animated films. I was prepared to hate it. At the end I was both surprised at the fact that I didn’t hate it and that my wife liked it and the kids loved it.

Welcome to the Symphony, interactive-audio for kids

“What’s that noise?” our 4 year old asked as he stumbled into the kitchen. “That’s a cello” I said, “press that pink button and you’ll hear a viola”. Just like that the purpose of Welcome to the Symphony, a new book by Carolyn Sloan and James Williamson proved its purpose. For the next ten minutes he quizzed me on what is a symphony, about the different instruments and why the mice wanted to hear it.

Daddy, have you been to Sweden?

“Daddy, have you been to Sweden?” our 6 year old asked from the back seat. It would seem a ridiculous question on the surface and it is, but my first reaction was, ‘how did you know’?  Our son is not some 6 year old travel savant; he was merely asking random questions. The second thing that popped into my head was “how do you even know about Sweden?”

Slack in the leash, #UniteMonday and team parenting

I’m a Sisterhood of the Motherhood Partner and was compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own. Before I was a dad I was a pet owner. It was two fabulous dogs, living with me and two fabulous cats who begrudgingly accepted the circumstances of the two canines.  I’d let Abby and Wilson have enough fun on these walks to have smell things, look silly and get their exercise. They had a kick running and it was good for my fitness, but it wasn’t the best for their training. Because of that I learned that I had to control the show, even though part of the goal was for them to have fun, they couldn’t get too far away from what they knew or how they should act.  Parenting, especially during the holidays and on the weekend is akin to this. #UniteMonday is about dealing with the potential guilt or judgment that comes after these times, realizing that it’s all OK and encouraging positive thoughts.

This Christmas Comfy Critters partners with CHOA to make kids happy

Hey, we were provided with product for review, all thoughts are our own. The other day we went shopping and our 4 year old made a ‘pillow’ from the socks that we were buying. Sometimes both of our children use towels for blankets around the house. It’s not that we don’t have any blankets. It’s that most of our blankets are sized to fit beds and therefore, not convenient for small people to carry around. This is two issues that have one solution, Comfy Critters. When it’s folded up it becomes a character pillow, unfold it and you’ve got a blanket (with hood) that looks super cute.

It’s all of that plus through December 31 Comfy Critters is giving one away to a child at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for every one purchased. Your get the warm fuzzies by helping a child in the hospital that you’ll never meet and your child gets the warm feelies by keeping their Comfy Critter on them.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School, is go-to reading for ages 8 and up

Some constants about 10 year old kids are that they like pizza, cartoons, video games and hanging out with their friends. They’re also huge fans of the Wimpy Kid series. It’s a publishing juggernaut about the life of Greg Heffley, a tween/teen boy who is discovering life and trying to avoid his family.  “All my friends read it, they’ve read all of them” our 13 year old niece told us when I asked her about Wimpy Kid.  Now that we have a young reader in the house I’m realizing just how good-and impactful the Wimpy Kid books are for that age. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School is no exception, I read the book- it’s fabulous and the crowd at our school’s Scholastic book fair purchased every copy in stock.
