Cat Ninja is an elementary-aged graphic novel series that runs with glee towards ages eight and up, all but taunting them not to read it. It’s a beautiful autumn day and I’m sitting outside reading Mutts and it’s awesome. One could change every word of that previous sentence, except for ‘Mutts and it’s awesome.’, to something different and it would still be true. It’s a stormy, winter’s day and I’m in bed, under the covers reading Mutts, and it’s awesome. See, it still works. Seasonal comparisons are needed in those sentences because Mutts: Coming Home features Early running on a trail with his human. The leaves on the trees are becoming bright orange to dark yellow and are just about to succumb to gravity. It’s there where they’ll be crunched by walkers, and dogs and will complete the food chain with worms using them to produce compost.

Mutts: Walking Home compiles the tour de force dog and cat comic strip genius that’s as great as it ever was.

Sorceline, ethereal graphic novel with manga touches for upper elementary

Granga. Magic novel. I’m looking over those two Frankenstein words in my head whilst trying to describe Sorceline. They’re words that I made up because thinking of the audience that’s best for Sorceline constantly got my head moving. It’s a graphic novel with spooky sensibilities. It’s a manga with graphic novel touches and hooks in it that’ll make the book a slam dunk for Potterheads. Sorceline is all of those things, it just depends on what fandom or delivery, that you prefer as to how you’ll describe the book.

Cat Ninja: Time Heist, a graphic novel purrfect for elementary ages

How elementary schools receive their books is a fascinating world. I’m in a different elementary school library almost every school day and the fact that I don’t see some series is quite surprising. One of them that is top of mind is the Investigators series. That series of graphic novels is one that every kid aged eight and up would love. In other cat-egories, Cat Ninja is a graphic novel series that elementary schools (and their readers) would laugh at, share, talk about, and would be constantly checked out by an eager queue of boys and girls alike. The second book in the series, Cat Ninja: Time Heist rips through the psyche of a typical nine-year-old-like catnip that’s been teasing placed on the back of a tiny revolving toy mouse.

A Tale As Tall As Jacob, family, life and entertaining

Here, read this all-age graphic novel about ADHD. Here, read this all-age graphic novel about a funny, real, and sometimes contentious relationship about a pair of siblings. As a written description it’s possible that neither one of those sentences might attract the elementary-aged reader to A Tale As Tall As Jacob. However, the benefit of an effective all-age graphic novel is that the images in the can bring in readers who otherwise might not have been interested in it. On the cover, we see a giant youth who is wreaking havoc in the house as his family runs for cover. Is this a Paul Bunyon tale, the story of a child with an active imagination, or something entirely different?

A Tale As Tall As Jacob is an all age graphic novel that sneaks in with wit, charm and family about a topic you might otherwise avoid, ADHD.

A World of Wisdom, phrases that we know, in ways that we don’t

If upper elementary school polyglot students had a collection of bathroom books, then A World of Wisdom would be in every single one of them. The same could be said if those ages also had a coffee table in their living room for those coffee table books that people pick up when they want to make interesting, idle chatter. A World of Wisdom is an illustrated book that humorously shows the absurdity that some idioms mean to those who don’t speak their native tongue. As a former ESL teacher, I can 100% tell you that “it’s raining cats and dogs” is incredibly silly to Chinese students. They’ll gamely play along as they practice and try to master one of the more common idioms in English. However, every country on the planet has some phrase or idiom that uniquely states a condition with such precision that it leaves text 50 times as long for want.

A World of Wisdom takes the phrases that we know and show us that they exist everywhere in one shape or another.

Montessori. Just the mere mention of it can confuse, intimidate and equally raise or repel parents to their education line in the sand. We think of Montessori as a way of teaching in a way that lets kids find the answer, lets them think more on their own, or uses different methods to engage the students. For example, I teach at a public school, but my methods are ‘Montessori-esque’, in that I’ll let the students dangle on the fishing line of education for a while before I give them the answer. It’s better to teach kids how to get to the answer than to just provide them with it. The Secret Garden, a graphic novel-elementary intro to a classic book

Have you seen those YouTube videos where creators listen to something that is well known in some circles, yet it’s the first time that they’ve experienced it? There’s the famous Phil Collins one and there are also some great ones that I like with Iron Maiden and Dream Theater. Those videos are fun to watch because they validate what we already know to be true, plus they’re entertaining and it’s great to see others enjoy what you personally, have liked for a while.

The Secret Garden is like that for me. I know it’s a classic and a book that millions, perhaps even every middle school reader alive have read. They’ve seen the movies, have dioramas about it, and more, yet I’ve never read it. The Secret Garden, a graphic novel is adapted by Mariah Marsden with illustrations by Hanna Luechtefeld and is a lovely piece of work.
