Super Sons #10 review, Muppet Babies no more

Super Sons is the story of Jon, the son of Superman and Damian, who is the son of Batman. When the series was first announced and I took a look at the comic book I decried it as Muppet Babies. In hindsight, that was the adult comic book purist in me. I didn’t give the comic a chance and here we are, almost a year late it’s one of our son’s favorite comics. Super Sons #10 is a great jumping on point for new readers because it’s a stand-alone story that has our two young heroes being presented with their own superhero hideout.

All ages comics for November 15

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube video we’ll go over Dogs from :01 First Second, Adventure Time Comics, Bolivar, Simpsons Comics and Mech Cadet Yu (one of the best all ages comics of the year!). Another book that we’ll talk about is A Polar Bear In Love, it’s a manga and will resonate with animal lovers or those that want a simple manga that starts with the first issue.   Here’s a look at three all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

Secret Sons #10

From DC Comics, Super Sons is the story about Damian and Jon, who are the sons of Batman and Superman. For parents: it’s not as bad as it sounds and kids will really enjoy it. It’s got enough superhero action that one would expect, while also teaching kids the mythos of Batman and Supes. This issue is a great jumping on point because they’re starting a new arc with the two tween heroes getting their own superhero digs.

Over the Garden Wall #20

Over the Garden Wall issue #20 is from Boom! Studios and has legions of fans from the Cartoon Network Show. Middle school students will follow along to the characters from show that they already love in new, ongoing adventures. The reading level is appropriate for upper elementary school and older, but the dry humor is going to be appropriate for ages 10 and up.

Your Pal Archie #4

Riverdale is everywhere, but it all started with some all ages comics and the characters that live there. Your Pal Archie is a new series from Archie Comics that is drawn in the classic Archie style. Whereas Archie is geared to tween audiences and has situations that are older, Your Pal Archie is old school Archie. This is wacky hijinks, physical gags and Archie being banned from Mr. Lodge’s house, but then ends up driving his limousine. This is the Archie to reach for if you want new stories from Riverdale that are appropriate for ages 6 and up.

Your pal archie, archie, archie comics, all ages comics, over the garden wall, boom studios, cartoon network, middle school, secret sons, dc comics, comics,

This week the all ages comics include Dogs from :01 First Second, Mech Cadet Yu, Secret Sons, Your Pal Archie and mane more for ages 6 and up.

What are the all ages comics this week? As with past years, the week immediately after Halloween is skinny, but don’t let that put you off from visiting your local comic book store. The 900 pound gorilla this week is actually a book. It’s book 12 in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, The Getaway. The Heffley family is leaving town and going someplace tropical. Expect venomous insects, family in-fighting, teen angst, lots of comic situations and many stick figures in the book. Grades two and up will be able to read these books, with their sweet spot being upper elementary to low middle school. We’ll detail some more graphic novels, books and comics in the podcast and YouTube video.  Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

The Archies, issue #2

Riverdale has brought forth lots of new adventures. The Archies is the comic book brother to Archie, which is the print originator to the very popular Riverdale on the CW. The Archies is one of those almost all ages comics that will be of interest to middle school students and older. There is nothing graphic in the content for younger readers; it’s just that they won’t identify with the stories as much. The Archies follows Archie Andrews and the story of his band. Because of that, older middle school students who are in band or play an instrument will really identify with this book.

Nathan hale, hazardous tales, raid of no return, reds planet, friends and foes, reds planet friends and foes, graphic novel, all ages comics, squirrel girl, my little pony, MLP, the archies, diary of a wimpy kid, the getaway, all ages comics

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, #60

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are trying to come to terms with one of their own who is unsure about following the family way. My Little Pony is a classic, with characters that generations of elementary school girls have followed, read and dressed up as. Girls aged 7 through 9 should love this comic book. In this issue the aforementioned pony is having a coming of age crisis-do they do what they want to do or what they think others want them to?

Squirrel Girl, issue #26

Squirrel Girl is one of the most creative, bizarre and interesting almost all ages comics that you get every month. This series is great for kids in middle school and up who want something that’s well written and unexpected. Issue #26 of Squirrel Girl takes that spirit and amps it up for a special one-shot of things you don’t expect. This is funny, surreal and a superhero unlike others who does it all while maneuvering high school, albeit with a large tail.

Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes

Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes is one of the best graphic novels of the year. The fact that it’s an all ages graphic novel is even more remarkable. Red is a young girl who is on an alien planet. She’s making the best of it and in her second book she’s coming to terms with its residents, leadership and new aliens. From the sharp art, beautiful drawings and funny, personable characters this is one graphic novel that kids 7 and up will immediately love.

Nathan Hale’s, Raid of No Return from the Hazardous Tales series

Nathan Hale tells true tales about history through graphic novels. Because the stories are real and often take place in wartime, they’re suited for readers in middle school. Raid of No Return is the 7th book in his Hazardous Tales book series and details the little known story about a team of soldiers from the USA who were on a secret mission to Japan in WWII. Their plane was detected before arriving in Tokyo and the story of what happened to the soldiers is amazing. This is history. It’s approachable history for readers without being graphic or going into the hard realities of war.

Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes, sharp art, great story-fabulous book

It’s sometimes difficult to jump into an existing book series. You feel like you’re late to the party, wish that you would’ve discovered it first or are hesitant because you don’t know the characters. Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes is the second book in Eddie Pittman’s series and our first introduction to the characters and I’m eating crow. Hello metaphorical crow, I eat you, not because I said that Red’s Planet wasn’t a good book, rather, I simply thought that based on its cover.

New all ages comics for November 1

What are the new all ages comics this week? It’s a great week for some all age graphic novels including the sequel to one of our favorites from last year, Dream Jumper. Dream Jumper, Curse of the Harvester continues the story of Ben, who is now in the business of dream jumping and business is booming; but a new force in the dream world is about to cause chaos. Dream Jumper is a great graphic novel series from Graphix for ages 7 and up. Also in the podcast we’ll talk about Snow White, a new Mutts Treasure called #LoveMutts, Dog Man and more. Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

For Better or Worse

For Better or Worse The Complete Library is for the fans of this classic comic strip. This strip started in 1979 and ran through 2008. For Better or Worse is still in over 2,000 newspapers as reruns. This book was done with creator’s Lynne Johnston’s help and tracks the Patterson family through key points of their three decades in print. This was one of the few comic strips that had their characters age. Fans of the strip still remember reading about the death of Farley, the Patterson’s first English Sheepdog.

Simpsons Comics Explosion

Because you might not be able to purchase every issue of Simpsons Comics…..Simpsons Comics Explosion is published annually. This is a whopping 96 pages of bright blue hair, yellow skin, blue onsie, white shirt fun from Springfield’s favorite mess of a family, the Simpsons. Issue #4 of Simpsons Comic Explosion has Homer taking on a job as a stand-in for Krusty, a Professor Fink story, a Power Plants Vs. Zombies story and much more. Priced at $9.99 this is for those that already like Simpsons Comics, but it’s one of the best all ages comics that kids 7 and up can pick up on a monthly basis.

Adventure Time

Adventure Time is one of the most popular shows for kids in upper elementary school and up. Realistically, the show is best enjoyed by teenagers as most of the humor and attitude will be understood by them without having to explain what is and isn’t appropriate or real. To that end, the Adventure Time comic book from Boom! Studios fills the void of younger kids who want to know Adventure Time, but whose parents don’t want them watching the show. This is one of the all ages comics that teens will legitimately enjoy, in addition to younger readers, without sacrificing cool points or incurring the distrustful eye of mom (or dad). Adventure Time #70 kicks is part 1 of 4, so it’s a nice jumping on point for new fans.

Usagi Yojimbo

Usagi Yojimbo is one of those perfect comic books. It has ninjas, action, drama, wry humor and anthropomorphic animals. Usagi Yojimbo #163 has our favorite ninja being asked for assistance from a local thief, who has been stealing in order to return things to the public. Each issue of Usagi has a story that is greater than the sum of its panels and manages to combine action, heart and consequences into each issue. Usagi Yojimbo costs $3.99 from Dark Horse Comics and is best enjoyed by ages 8 and up who like comics that concentrate on story and art.

A Die Hard Christmas

With tongue firmly in cheek and intended for ages 10 and up, A Die Hard Christmas takes its cue from “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Enter John McClain in Nakatomi Plaza, without any shoes as he evades one of the best baddies of all time Alan Rickman, who played Hans Gruber. A Die Hard Christmas will make fans of the original movie smile, but probably won’t resonate with those that haven’t seen it. Having said that I’m smiling.

All ages comics for October 25

It’s the week of Halloween ComicFest, happening this Saturday, October 28. To find out which of your local comic books stores is participating-and what they’ll have there, please check out their website. Some stores will have more things happening; all participating comic book stores will have candy and free books, many of which will be all ages comics for those young readers.

In the podcast we’ll talk about a great one-shot all ages comics from one of the best Disney films in the past decade, a cool coloring book from a classic video game maker, an old school magazine for fans of monsters and preview one of the best original graphic novels of the year for ages five and up. Check out the podcast and share it with a friend. Now, let’s take a look at five of the other all ages comics that will entertain boys and girls.

Frozen Magazine

Frozen Magazine #17 hits stores this week. It’s for fans of Frozen and has the benefit of not being accompanied by a song that your child will sing over and over. Frozen has original stories and only costs $3.99.

Spookhouse

Spookhouse was a fabulous mini-series by Eric Powell and Steve Mannion that managed to be an all ages comics that was both scary AND fine for young readers 7 and up. This graphic novel collects the complete mini-series. That is worth stating because it was challenging to find in your local store. This is fun, spooky stuff that kids in elementary school will love to read.

Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight

A series that could stand to have a monthly presence in all ages comics is Goosebumps. This week has the classic franchise dipping their toe into comic books with Goosebumps: Monsters at Midnight. It’s a three issue mini-series that readers in elementary school will enjoy. This is a logical fit because Goosebumps is a stable book at the Scholastic Book Fairs, which elementary school kids love to visit and learn about cool things to read.

Ducktales

Ducktales is the more action oriented Disney comic book title. Donald, Scrooge and the nephews get into all manner of trouble in an all ages comic book that has more reading than you might think. Ages 5 and up are OK with the content, however, ages 8 and up will be able to read it by themselves without assistance.

Tangled

Tangled The Series Adventure Is Calling is a trade paperback that, much like Big Hero 6, is one of the better and more original creations from the Mouse House. From IDW Publishing, this Tangled collection will appeal to girls more than boys, but has enough action to keep them reading.

The music in the podcast is from Hicham Chahidi over at Free Music Archive.

What are the new all ages comics this week? If you want to get some of the mini-comics for Halloween ComicFest the end is nigh. They’re packs of 25 mini-comics and only cost $4.99. There are some great all age graphic novels, collections of comic strips and all ages comics out this week including Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

Zits

Zits is one of the classic comic strips. The best comic strips can make older audiences laugh without making the ones that are represented in the panels feel like they are not being treated with respect. Zits has been doing that perfectly for the past 20 years. What Was That All About: 20 Years of Strips and Stories collects some of the comic strips that creators Jeremy Scott and Jim Borgman have been telling since the late 90s. You can catch the daily comic strip on their website.

Mighty Mouse #5 of #5

Mighty Mouse, your mini-series has come to an end. This was so much better than it should’ve been and really surpassed our expectations. It blended the classic world of Mighty Mouse and bridged him to a contemporary setting and then back again. If you’re looking for something left of center in all ages comics, check out this issue or thumb through the collected graphic novel in a month.

Phoebe and her Unicorn: The Magic Storm

Phoebe and her Unicorn have been entertaining middle school girls for five books now through comic paneled stories. The Magic Storm is a graphic novel format, all new story, where Phoebe and Marigold figure out what’s up with the power, look for dragons and have fun. This series is great for upper elementary school and up. Boys can enjoy it if they give it a chance, but will probably bail at the first mention of ‘unicorn’, which happens quickly. Girls 8 and up, this is your jam.

Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power

Lumberjanes is one of the best all ages comics that you can pick up any month. Each issue is fabulous, mixed with science-fiction, camp hijinks, friendship and competition. Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! is the first novel featuring April, Jo, Molly, Mal, Ripley and a couple special guests with horns on their head. Ages 8 and up should be able to read this novel. Each chapter is short, eight pages at the longest, has some illustrations and is a great book companion to a great comic book. Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power is by Mariko Tamaki and available from Amulet Books.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Vol. 2, #2

Voltron assemble! Voltron: Legendary Defender, Volume 2, #2 takes its cue from the show on Netflix. It’s got great art, sharp dialogue and lots of action. The vocabulary and action will be OK for ages 7 and up, but might be challenging for that age to read on their own.

Graveyard  Shakes, a tween story of ghosts and consequences

Graveyard Shakes is a fun graphic novel that deftly glides through a story with some very dark points, without being too scary or morose. It’s loaded with ghosts, most of them ill tempered and some of them cruel, yet the feeling of the graphic novel is positive, uplifting and fanciful.
