All age comic books for April 3

This week the all age comic books come full circle for a couple titles. A regular monthly series is presenting its final regular issues in a graphic novel, while other comic books that ended, see a collection of their (eat my) shorts shown for all to have a cow. In the podcast we’ll chat about Marvel Team Up, True Believers, Catwad. Adventure Time and more. For now though let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest readers as young as 6.

Bart Simpson: Breaks Out

Sad Panda when Simpson’s Comics ended in 2018. Much like Plants Vs. Zombies they said that new graphic novel collections will come out. Bart Simpson: Breaks Out is most likely not an entirely new collection of Simpson’s favorite lost son. This is a collection of previously published shorts…from a spikey-haired youth. This is a great graphic novel from a classic character. It will appeal to fans of The Simpsons or those readers in middle school and up who are looking for a great laugh.

Marvel Action: Black Panther

These Marvel Action comic books that IDW Publishing is putting out in conjunction with Marvel Comics are outstanding. Black Panther is the latest to get his own version. This is one of the all age comic books that define what makes a cool comic book. It has action and content, but doesn’t water things down to a young level. It has action, but it’s age appropriate for ages 6 and up that will leave then entertained, while still being a great read for those older Wakanda fans.

Jim Henson’s The Storyteller Sirens

We are huge fans of this ongoing mini-series from Boom! Stutios. Jim Henson’s The Storyteller Sirens is a four issue mini-series with gorgeous artwork a story that will interest those middle-Earth audiences. A mermaid by any other name, but this is the kind of mermaid with mystery and dread. Much like a poisonous snake, leave them along and your day will end up just fine. However, the folks in these short stories most likely don’t heed that advice. The art and story in these comic books are top notch and will interest those middle school readers who like a bit of renaissance with their story.

All age comic books for March 20

Happy new comic book day! What are the all age comic books that you’re reading this week? If you share any of those picture on social media please tag them with #DaddyMojo or #AllAgeComicBooks so we can see what you’re reading and follow along. Over in the podcast (for real!) we’ll chat about Ben 10, Nancy Drew and more. For now, let’s look at three comic books that will rock readers as  young at 7.

Big Nate, Payback Time!

Big Nate is timeless. I laugh out loud at most strips from this character who was created by Lincoln Peirce. Nate’s world is timeless and will remind older readers of what it was like to be a kid. It will also remind younger readers of how funny being in 5th grade can be, even when it seems like the world is colluding against you. Our now 9 year old didn’t ‘get’ Big Nate until this  year, now he  can understand the situations that he encounters, laughs (loudly) at them and looks forward to the next compilation in the series. Big Nate, Payback Time! is hilarious and at only $7.40 it’s an incredible bargain.

Marvel Action: Avengers

IDW Publishing and Marvel Comics have teamed up for one of the best all age comic books you’ll find. Thankfully, they’ve made a series of different comic books to suit your super hero taste. There’s a Black Panther, Spider-Man and Avengers series for your taste. This week has Marvel Action: Avengers coming out, it’s #3 in this monthly series and ages 7 and up, who like super hero action will love it. Moreover, it’s not watered down action, rather, it’s the sweet spot of all age comic books where it’s appropriate for younger ages-but also interesting for older readers.

Lumberjanes #60

While we’re on the topic of must-see comic books….have you read an issue of Lumberjanes? Lumberjanes, from Boom! Studios is one of the consistently best comic books out there. It’s also great for ages 8 and up. Even those slightly younger will enjoy the art, it’s just that they won’t be able to read the words or relate to the situations. Lumberjanes is about friendship, summer camp, aliens, rock stars and being a kid. It’ll skew slightly more towards girls than boys, but not by much.

All age comic books for December 19

So, you’re looking for some cool all age comic books to stuff the stocking with? There are a couple great ones this week, as well as a couple nice titles from previous weeks that’ll fill that big sock by the fireplace. Over in the podcast and on Youtube we’ll chat about Star Wars, a great DC/Hanna-Barbera team-up, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and more. For now let’s look at three titles that will interest readers as young as 5.

Minions

Minions, Viva La Boss, #2 is out and this mini-series will enchant readers as young as 5. That’s the age when one of our boys really started to like Minions. This comic book’s sweet spot is 8, simply due to its presentation and the fact that the art is not identical to how they look on screen. This is one of those great all age comic books that are great for boys or girls.

Betty & Veronica

Betty & Veronica, #1 of #5 is out from Archie Comics and hits the demographic of girls in middle school and up. This is not as moody or dark as the television show, nor is it as bubblegum poppy as the 60’s version of Archie. If anything it’s more cut from the cloth of the show, but it skews just a bit younger than that. Ages 10 and up should enjoy this mini-series that concentrates on Riverdale’s two leading ladies.

Jim Henson Beneath The Dark Crystal

We love The Dark Crystal and Jim Henson Beneath The Dark Crystal is a mini-series from Boom! Studios. Issue #5 of #12 is out and will be a great blast of Ember Queen fun and dealing with the Throne of Mithra. The art in this mini-series is beautiful and steps back into that world seamlessly. The art and story combine to make this a great comic book for middle school and up.

All age comic books for December 5

Happy new comic book day!  That’s #NCBD to those who follow along on social media and this week has some really cool new all age comic books that will interest those new pop culture fans, as well as those readers with an old soul. Over in the podcast we’ll talk about Star Trek Vs. Batman, Shazam, a new select-your-story-adventure and much more. For now let’s look at three comic books that will interest boys or girls as young as 6 years old.

Casper

American Mythology Productions needs to be on your radar for several all age comic books. One of them is Casper and in this case, Casper’s Capers. Issue #2 of Casper’s Capers is out this week and it’s got the ghost himself, plus Wendy on the cover. There will be much magical mayhem, with relatively simple vocabulary that grades 2 and up will be able to read. Thos readers who are slightly younger will enjoy the story and the chance for mom, dad or anyone else to read it to them. Casper’s Capers is $3.99.

Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down

Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down #2 of #3 tells the back story behind Rey. This is where an Imperial Star Destroyer on Jakku has been lost for decades. Now a huge sandstorm has revealed its presence, just in time for Rey, a scavenger to pick through its treasure. This is a fun mini-series that’s great for fans of Star Wars. It’s cut from the same cloth as Star Wars Adventures, the excellent all age comic book that’s published monthly. Star Wars Adventures, Destroyer Down, #2 is from IDW Publishing and $3.99.

Team Sonic Racing

Some parents will have to get past the fact that the blurry line between video games and comic books. To that end, Team Sonic Racing is essentially a video game tie-in of an upcoming Sonic video game. Literally, Team Sonic Racing is a new video game coming out in the winter of 2019. However, Sonic, the comic book is also hugely popular with elementary school aged readers. Face the fact parents: It’s a Sonic world, we’re just trying to navigate our children to content that they want to read.

Marvel Action: Spider-Man, a perfect publishing team-up

Marvel Action: Spider-Man sounds like a case of over the top branding. However, it’s presented that way for a very good reason. Marvel Action: Spider-Man is a new all age comic book that’s presented by IDW Publishing. On paper this is a match made in heaven. Star Wars Adventures from IDW Publishing is one of the go-to all age comic books and if they can reproduce that success on other characters that’s awesome. That is exactly the result with Marvel Action: Spider-Man. This is what an all age comic book should be. It’s jammed with action, sharp dialogue, gorgeous art and characters that kids know and want to read about-without sacrificing the action, it story or dumbing it down.

The Hidden Witch perfectly continues the goodness from The Witch Boy

We really liked The Witch Boy when it came out in 2017. It had age appropriate spooks with lessons that young readers didn’t know they were learning-or that they didn’t know they needed to learn. Its delivery was entertainment, fun ghost/monster driven fun that also happened to be entirely relatable to kids 7 and up. The Hidden Witch picks up, to a degree where the first book left off.

All age comic books for November 28

This week is similar to last year’s week after Thanksgiving and is absolutely packed with all age comic books. There are lots of go-to comic books, as well as, some nice ‘new’ all age comic books that might not be on your radar. In the podcast and on YouTube we’ll chat about some cool ‘life’ comics like Archie and Fence, the classics like Looney Tunes, Scooby, explain why Moongirl is rated T and more. For now, let’s look at three comic books that will entertain readers as young as 5 years old.

Spider-Man

This is our favorite comic book of the week for many reasons. A. It’s Spider-Man and kids want to love Spider-Man, his friends and villains. B. This version is one of the all age comic books that anybody can pick up and read. It’s a special publishing venture between Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing that puts Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy in the same school to take down baddies. This monthly series will be great for those in middle elementary school and up.

Pink Panther: Classic Christmas

If you have a kid 6 -years-old or higher they’ll love this comic book series. They might know the character from the relatively recent cartoons, maybe they know the classics or they might even think it’s an advertising icon for insulation. We were quite shocked when our child that age read and loved this comic book. It’s great, simple fun with more art than words and will be comfort food for the early elementary school set. Bonus: this issue is all Christmas, with a couple appearances of The Inspector to boot.

Atomic Robo: Greatest Hits

Atomic Robo is a great comic book series from IDW Publishing. Its content is OK for any age, but the reading level is such that middle elementary school age kids-who like science or dinosaurs, will love it. I figure most kids will love either one of those two, so this is a safe bet. This issue celebrates ten years of Atomic Robo and is only $1. Get on the train, this is a fun, smart comic book that’s one of those that swim below the surface.

All age comic books for November 14

It’s a great week in all age comic books. Over on Youtube and in the podcast we’ll talk about why Unbeatable Squirrel Girl has the rating it does from Marvel Comics, a three-pack of books that first graders will love and a cross over mini-series that sees Star Trek and Transformers go into battle. For now, let’s look at three great all age comic books that will be appropriate for elementary school and older.

Minions

Why hasn’t a Minions comic book existed before now? That’s a logical question and one that has entries before, but they’ve been as a mini-series. Minions are back on Titan Comics and this is the stuff that will hit the sweet spot of kids in first grade through elementary school and beyond.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is #2 of two in this mini-series. It features a new creative direction that’s overseen by the showrunners of current incarnation on television. This is all age action that boys will enjoy more than girls, but is appropriate for all.

Teen Titans Go TPB, Vol. 5, Falling Stars

We re-watched Teen Titans GO! To The Movies and it’s just as funny as the first time we saw. It’s arguably even funnier because we could listen for the jokes that we know that we missed. This monthly comic book from DC Comics is a homerun. Teen Titans Go TPB, Vol 5 Falling Stars has issues 25-30 of the all age comic book in one collected form. This is great as a gift or for reading yourself.
