New all age comic books for July 12, 2017

Headed to the comic book store this weekend to check out the new all age comic books? You’ll find lots of classic names in new packaging, a cool craft book, classic video game name finally comes to stores and others. What all age comic books are you reading? If it’s anything that’s under our radar or one that you particularly want folks to know about please leave any suggestions in the comments here on the post or over at the podcast.

Mighty Mouse

We were skeptical about Mighty Mouse coming back to comic books. Granted he’s a classic character and the premise sounds great, but it was on Dynamite Comics. Dynamite does some fine comic books for older readers, but the all age market place didn’t seem like their scene. Mainly it was their advertisements for their other comic books that I was concerned about. The last borderline all age comic book we saw from Dynamite was a couple of years ago and featured advertisement for other Dynamite books that were not for all ages.

Mighty Mouse plays it just right. The comic book has ads for other Dynamite comics, but they’re all OK for any audience. That’s a bonus because the plot and art for Mighty Mouse is a hoot. It references the classic appeal, while treating readers like they have a brain and are based in today’s culture.

Star Wars Legends The Original Marvel Years, Vol. 2

Back in the late 70’s Marvel Comics was the only source for Star Wars in comic books. Star Wars went back to Marvel in 2014 and they’re re-printing some of the original comics. Star Wars Legends The Original Marvel Years Vol 2 has Star Wars 24-38, Annual #1, Star Wars Weekly (from the U.K.) 94-99 and 104-115. This retails for just under $40, but classic Star Wars fans will love going back in time to look at these issues.

Art of Coloring: Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas

Halloween is just over three months away and that means the onslaught of Nightmare Before Christmas merch is nigh. Truth be told, this merchandise never really gets old for us and this film still holds up as well as it did in 1993. Art of Coloring: Tim Burtons’ Nightmare Before Christmas is for age that can color well enough to stay in the lines and enjoy Oogie Boogie

Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man

Spider-Man is for the kids and Marvel Universe Spider-Man Vs. Sinister Six Digest issues 9-11 of this great monthly series. It also includes Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man #1

Centipede

How is it that the classic Atari games have not been made into comic books or movies? Centipede is a new title from Dynamite that’s a great example of a teen comic and up. This is vengeance, with a Centipede twist, monster bugs and world killing messiness. It’s not for all ages, but those looking for strong science fiction action will dig this one.

Happy July and lets jump into the new all age comic books that kids as young as 5 can enjoy. If you live in the northern hemisphere here’s a great reason to visit a local comic book store-it’s air conditioned. And if it’s like our local comic book store they sell sodas for .75, so go hot and hydrate when before you leave. To find your local comic book store simply dig into Comic Book Store Locator and type in your zip code. The all age comic books this week are super, lot more superheroes than in previous weeks, plus some cool Doctor Who books, Hero Cats, Star Wars, Riverdale, DC Super Heroes and more.

Gumby

Fans of a certain age will say something spicy when they utter Gumby’s name. In this instance, Gumby is a new all age comic book, with classic appeal-but don’t tell the kids because those as young as 5 will love it. These are new stories from everyone’s favorite green character (don’t tell Kermit) that bring the old school character to today’s new school readers in a format that will make parents enjoy it as much as the kids they might be reading to.

DC Super Hero Girls: Katana At Super Hero High

Is this the summer of DC girl super power or have audiences finally caught up with it? DC Super Hero Girls is the latest in a series of graphic novels that feature the DCU girls in high school. These are original stories and art by Lisa Yee and they just keep getting better. Katana at Super Hero High features everyone’s favorite noble warrior as she’s assigned with guarding hundreds of sacred ninja swords. Her friends help out to teach everyone a lesson, have fun, kick butt and get kids interested in reading. This series is great for ages 7 and up to read on their own, but can be read to ages as young as 6.

True Believers: Spider Man

There was a popular tweet this week that said that Spider-Man is for kids period. To an extent that is true, let’s not quibble about the exact age and say that kids 7 and up will love True Believers: Spider-Man Brand New Day. This is a reprinting of Amazing Spider-Man 546 from 1999 and is great for that age and older. Everyone will love the True Believers price point of $1, so jump in and get the kids hooked on some old school Spidey.

Pokémon Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire

Our 7 year old is all Pokémon-all the time. He’s been going to the comic book store since birth, but he’s only recently discovered the Pokémon books. In our local comic book store they’re with the all age graphic novels, but your local store could keep them with anime or manga. Either way, they’re one of the best bangs for the buck that you’ll purchase. They’re thick, cost $4.99 and kids 6 and up will devour them.

Star Wars Dot To Dot Book

Dot to Dot books are another thing that our 7 year old is really into now. Thomas Pavitte does some fabulous 1000 puzzle challenges for Marvel, like GOTG, The Avengers and Spider-Man that he’s been doing and loving for the past year. Now Disney is getting into the advanced game with Star Wars Dot To Dot Book that has over 1,000 dots on every puzzle. Technically these books are geared towards the YA audience or adults, but if you have a puzzle kid then ages as low as 7 will love these challenges. If you’ve never done one of these you should be prepared to use a magnifying glass. Our child doesn’t need them when he doing one, but I need it whenever I do them.

The last week in June is not specifically known for a bumper crop of all age comic books, but this one seems packed. Think of a genre, worthy sequel or young reader comic book that you wanted your child to read and it’s somewhere in this mix. To find your local comic book store just type in your zip code into the Comic Book Store Locator and it will magically appear. Now-on with some of the coolest all age comic books that you’ll find this week.

Archie 75^th Anniversary

This is classic Archie and features the story line where he supposedly marries someone. The cover has Betty and Veronica on it in wedding dresses. Who does he choose? Why is a high school kid getting married anyway? Don’t worry about these things and jump on into the Archie fun as they celebrate 75 years of Riverdale.

Lumberjanes

Lumberjanes is one of our go-to comic books each month. The plot varies from surreal supernatural, teens dealing with semi-common summer camp problems to their parents not understanding. You can pick up any issue of Lumberjanes and immediately understand why it’s one of the best comics out there today.

MLP Movie Prequel

File under: Redemption for Equestria. The My Little Pony is hitting the big screen soon and this mini-series features a character from it in each issue. There is a new, big bad villain and they’re sure to rock Equestria in ways that they’re not used to.

True Believers: Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man

True Believers: Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man reprints the first issue from 1976 and it’s only $1. It’s just in time for the film, which is earning great reviews and is being welcomed as one of the first true Marvel films that embraces youth culture. They were aiming for this since The Fantastic Four and it appears they’ve hit the nail on the head.

Cleopatra in Space

Cleopatra in Space, The Golden Lion is a treat. We’re late to the party as this is the fourth book in the Scholatic series by Mike Maihack, but we’ve seen the prior graphic novels and realize what the hubbub was about. This is a fun adventure based series of books, set in space, with lots of Egyptology references and a side of girl power. Kids 8 and up who are looking for an action packed book that will also whet their appetite for historical source material or earlier books should dive into this.

New all age comic books this week

Happy new comic book day! It happens every Wednesday and included in them are many all age comic books that will be great for ages 5 and up. Comic books that a 5 year old can read? They might need some help ‘reading’ them, but the content will be great for kids and there is at least one of those each week.

Popeye #56 reproduces some of the classic Popeye comics. These are classic comics that will be OK for young readers. They’re simple, packed with spinach, action, boats and bulging biceps. My Little Pony Annual #1 is out and this series really appeals to young kids, especially girls. When our son was 5 he liked this comic book. He aged out of it, but still has a handful of issues in his collection. Young girls, 5 and up will stay interested for many years.

8 year old readers have a couple great all age comic books to choose from. Disney does many things in children’s entertainment well. One thing that I always thought they could do better was book or comic books that originated from their better television shows, specifically Phineas & Ferb and Gravity Falls. Both of those would make great monthly comic books. This week sees a new book from Joe Books, Disney Gravity Falls Cinestory #1 Shorts. This has brand new art and adventures from this very entertaining show that takes place in Gravity Falls, Oregon. Memo to Joe Books or Disney Publishing, a monthly comic from this show and Phineas & Ferb would be welcome.

That age will also like Spookhouse, the graphic novel Time Museum, Adventure Time #62 and more.

Ages 12 and up will want to dive into the True Believers line at Marvel Comics. This week has three-$1 titles that are out to pump up audiences about Logan. That film, Logan is rated R and is in no way OK for kids. However, the X-Men comics are OK for teens and up and Wolverine is a fun, complex character that they’ll want to read. Old Man Logan #1, Wolverine and the X-Men #1 and Wolverine #1 are all reprinted and only $1.

Hilo, The Great Big Boom-a funny, go-to graphic novel for ages 7 and up

We’ve been late to good parties before and it’s frustrating. Hilo, The Great Big Boom by Judd Winick is the third book in the Hilo series and I’m just joining this party. Is it an apt metaphor to compare a graphic novel to a party? Let’s define party as having a fun time, smiling when you’re listening to their stories, not wanting it to end and liking the characters who are there with you. Using that, as well as a slightly boarder definition of party, Hilo, The Great Big Boom is something that kids 7 and up will absolutely love.

There are lots of things to love this week at your local comic book store. If you’re looking for all age comic books or a great graphic novel that kids will love there is something for you this week. In humor comic books kids have their choice between some of the modern classics like, Pink Panther Snow Day-a one shot comic with all of his friends, Scooby Doo Team Up #23, My Little Pony-Friendship is Magic #51, Jughead #13 and Adventure Time Comics TPB Volume one.

Superheroes have their day with Batman 66 Meets Wonder Woman 77 #2 of 6 is out. This is campy Batman meeting Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman. The twist is that Bruce Wayne is 10 years old and he meets Wonder Woman, toss in Ra’ al Ghul, the League of Shadows, good action and campy dialogue. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #16 and a director’s cut of Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1 are cool too. The later is for the fans. It has some ‘making of’ sketches, commentary from the creators and allows readers to see exactly what goes in to making a comic book. It’s also a great chance to take a look at one of the best mini series of the year for all age comic books.

For ages 12 and up they may want to check out the classic Ghost in the Shell. This is the first time that it’s been published in its original Japanese right-to-left manga format. It’s a story that is not for younger audiences, but those low teens will be curious about it because of word of mouth and the film coming out.

There are two action all age graphic novels that will interest middle school students and up. Kid Beowulf, The Song of Roland is the second installment in the Kid Beowulf series. It presents the classic poem in a way that any age can enjoy. We’re reading this graphic novel now and will have a review later this week. Also out this week is Science Comics: Bats, Learning to Fly. Science Comics has previously done books on volcanoes, coral reefs and others. Each graphic novel has great art and presents these subjects in a through and entertaining way.

Our comic book of the week is Jim Henson’s The Power of Dark Crystal. This is from Archaia and joins the story many years since the film. It also celebrates the 35 anniversary of the film and tells a continuing story about a new race of creatures, as well as fan favorites.

Our favorite graphic novel this week is Hilo, The Great Big Boom. This is the third book in the series and its joy, enthusiasm and fun jumps off of the page. Hilo is a robot from another dimension who is on Earth with D.J. and Gina, his human friends. Hilo, The Great Big Boom picks up where the second one ended, with D.J and Hilo watching Gina get sucked into another dimension. The two friends plot on how to find her, deal with the new species they meet, Hilo’s history and more. This is a graphic novel that ages 7 and up will absolutely devour and then look at you with puppy dog eyes as if you have the next installment hidden away.

NewsPrints is the first great original graphic novel of 2017

It’s great when you discover a new literary treat. For us it could be something that exceeds expectations or something that comes out of the blue. NewsPrints by Ru Xu is a combination of both of those. This is a story driven graphic novel with manga influences that is difficult, if not impossible to put down. It’s a blend of cold war, science fiction and intrigue that’s guided by a young girl’s secrets and friends.

Happy new comic book day! That’s #NCBD if you’re following along on twitter, share what you’re buying or recommend new comics that others need to read. These are some of the cool new all age comic books this week. Are you watching Riverdale on television? Maybe reading a version of Archie, Betty & Veronica in comics? This week has the latest issue of Archie from Archie Comics, it’s a great comic, tween, real-life comic that middle school kids and up will enjoy.

Archie is milder than the television show that’s currently showing. It’s also meant for an older audience than the ‘classic’ Archie digests that you see in check-out counters at the supermarket. In short, there’s an Archie tailor made for any age and Archie #17 is the modern, revamped Riverdale character, but still has classic roots with modern issues.

Angry Birds Flight School #1 is a new series from IDW that has birds, lots of birds, many of them angry. What’s more, these characters are funny and ages 6 and up will enjoy reading about these feathered folks.

We’re big fans of Patrick McDonnell, the creator of Mutts. His art and words melt your soul and warm your heart. Darling, I Love You is a team-up with poet Daniel Ladinsky as they explore the human/pet relationship. It’s the classic Mutts characters set to a more poetic than usual background and will be great for ages 4 and up.

Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #4 is out and this mini-series is utterly fabulous. It’s super hero action with two great franchises that will be entertaining for ages 5 and up. This is one of the all age comic books that are a great example of exactly how entertaining and impactful they can be to young readers. It has great action and humor, plus enough reading to make it something that enhances the story. Get this comic book for any aged reader and they’ll promptly ask for the previous three issues.

Pulling a page from the Muppet Babies, DC Comics has Super Sons #1 out this week. It’s the son of Superman and Batman in their own comic book. This is rated T, so have kids 12 and up take a look at it. Another teen comic book is out this week, Kong of Skull Island, but this one is outstanding. It has lots of monster violence that’ll be too much for the smaller readers, but 12 and up will love the majestic art and big story line. WWE #2 is great for teen readers too. WWE in comics is a logical connection isn’t it? It’s a chance to read out to what kid’s favorite wrestlers are doing, toss in some out of arena drama and it’s good fun for wrestling fans and an action comic too.

The music in the podcast is from The Owl, it’s awesome, haunting and the stuff of dreamy, snowy cliffs and fjords.
