My wife is a better mom, but I’m a better dad

When I started being a stay at home dad the little things irritated me.  The ‘moms’ club that wouldn’t allow dads for the play dates was annoying and made getting play dates more work.   When store clerks innocently said “so you’re staying home with the kids today?” I’ve simply learned to smile politely and tell them that I do this every day.    Continue reading My wife is a better mom, but I’m a better dad

Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I love my wife.   Having said that, it’s good to watch a movie when she’s not around; no judgments- just me, beer, cats on the sofa and dogs by the fireplace.  On this occasion I finally got around to watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes. White Day is like Valentine’s Day, in a Sadie Hawkins way

When I was single I thought that Valentine’s Day for ladies not in a relationship meant that they were like a werewolf with a full moon.   “Well, if I’m not in a relationship, then I might as well talk to that cute, bald guy on the corner with 2 cats and 2 dogs”, all the single, slightly artsy ladies in Atlanta would say.  Shockingly, that never actually happened during my single years, or ever for that matter.  Continue reading White Day is like Valentine’s Day, in a Sadie Hawkins way

Low hanging gift fruit for the wife: A canvas photograph

Sometimes when I have to buy a gift for my wife I look like a deer in headlights.  Gift cards to Soma, Michael’s, DSW or Home Depot can only go so far.  If you go to the gift card well once too often you spoil the water forever.   Sometimes a husband needs to plan ahead and really think about a gift for his better half.  Continue reading Low hanging gift fruit for the wife: A canvas photograph

Cavemen in Babyland is a fine primer for dads and moms-to-be

Kindred Howard is a friend of mine.  When he sent me his book, Cavemen in Babyland, he told me that guys don’t normally read parenting books and that it was kind of aimed at women.   Granted, he was probably just taking that information from marketing companies or perhaps his publisher.  Continue reading Cavemen in Babyland is a fine primer for dads and moms-to-be

Make a Valentine’s Day plaster cast of your baby’s footprint

Making a plaster cast of your baby’s footprint is low hanging gift fruit for DIY type Dads.  It’s messy, simple, fun, involves the family and your wife will love it.  You can make a plaster cast of your baby’s footprint anytime, but if you do it around Valentine’s Day it can be done easier and more individualistic.  Continue reading Make a Valentine’s Day plaster cast of your baby’s footprint

The fastest and best way to cook spinach for dinner

It’s easy to get in a rut when you cook the meals for the family.  Chicken and pasta, salad and chicken or salad and meatloaf are all meals that our family has beaten into taste oblivion.  One day I was shopping in Publix and the cook who makes those in-store meals gave me the simplest hint: microwave the spinach.
