All ages comics for December 27

It’s Christmas week and your local comic book store is closed on December 25, but this week on new comic book day, (which is every Wednesday) there are some great all ages comics to fill the bill in case Santa missed the case. On the podcast and YouTube channel we’ll talk about Dog Man and Cat Kid, Geronimo Stilton, Star Wars Adventures and other mandatory things that your elementary school student will absolutely love. In the meantime, here are three all ages comics that will entertain-and be appropriate for ages as young as 5.

Casper and Wendy #1

As a kid I remember reading the old school Casper and Wendy team-up comic books. Wendy is the good witch, all dressed in red and Casper is the friendly ghost; between the two of them they manage to find fun wherever they go. These stories are fun and original, but have the same, classic characters that fans will remember from their original run. Kids aged 9 and up should be able to read Casper and Wendy on their own, while those 5 and up will want it read to them whilst they look at the pictures.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, #26

Galactus is back-and where he goes The Silver Surfer can’t be far behind. However, this time they meet Moon Girl-but is it a social call or something more world devouring? Moon Girl is a great monthly comic book for those in upper elementary and older. It has lots of action, but not the hyper-violent kind. It also has lots of humor-but not the fart or teen kind. It’s simply one of those great, creative, all ages comics for boys or girls aged 10 and up.

Samurai Jack : Quantum Jack (#4 of #5)

Samurai Jack is lost in time and can’t remember anything. In this mini-series from IDW Publishing he’s survived a series of villains, but this time he’s trapped inside the body of a desk worker. Do your kids like Johnny Test? If so then they’ll really enjoy Samurai Jack. The television version of Samurai Jack skews older, just like most other television-to-comic book translations. This mini-series, Samurai Jack: Quantum Jack will be appropriate for middle school and up.

This week has the Dog Man-8,000 pound gorilla in children’s publishing out with a new book, plus Casper and Wendy, Geronimo Stilton and more.

All ages comics for December 20

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube video we’ll go over two outstanding stories happening for the teen audience, plus three great graphic novels that make fabulous gifts. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is great for kids aged 9 and up, Ms. Marvel is a very well written series that’s for kids just a little bit older. Shinobi Ninja Princess Lightning Oni #4 is a great action series for ages 8 and up. There are lots of other individual all ages comics out this week, check out the complete post for them. Which comic book are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!

Pokemon Adventures: Black & White Graphic Novel, volume 6

We’re starting to read Pokemon Adventures with our 6 year old. He’s a reluctant reader who knows some sight words, but likes action and Pokemon. We’ve tried some other books but he hasn’t really taken to them as quickly as we’d hoped. Pokemon Adventures is a manga, so it opens from the back (as opposed to traditional books) and had art that’s more in tune with anime. So far he’s open to reading them, as will your Pokemon reader who wants to go beyond collecting the cards or playing the game.

Your Pal Archie, #5

With all the success that Riverdale is having, let’s not forget about the horse that Archie rode in on. Your Pal Archie is a regular monthly series that has Archie and his friends drawn in the classic style. This is one of the all ages comics staples that will hook in kids 5 and up. Realistically, girls will enjoy this series more than boys, but there’s enough Jughead goofiness to let some of the boys in on the fun too.

Miraculous Adventures #4

Ladybug and Cat Noir leave Paris for a visit to NYC. This is the third and final issue of this storyline in this entertaining monthly comic book. These are original stories with art that mirrors the style that kids like so much in the Nickelodeon show. It’s got action, some laughs and bad guys. Think of it as a step up from PJ Masks. Whereas that show peaks for children around 7, Miraculous is OK for kids aged 5 and up, but holds the audience until the pre-teen years.

Spongebob Comics

In case this is your first time here, each issue of Spongebob Comics is one of the best all ages comics that you can pick up. From a storytelling perspective, as well as artistically, they are great comic for anyone aged 6 and up. We’ve been buying this comic book for years and our 8 year old is still reading the ones from many years ago. If you don’t let your child watch the television show because of the sass or attitude, you can rest easy. The comic book version of Spongebob is all humor and almost no sass, in other words, it won’t encourage bad behavior and is just flat out funny.

Storytime with Batman

If you have a kid aged 3-7 who is craving good-night books this your jam. Storytime with Batman is a box collection of six books that are the perfect length for the end of the day. Each book is loaded with baddies from Gotham City, action, lessons and plenty of sight words too. Green Arrow, The Flash, Nightwing and other superheroes also lend a hand to save the day.

Angry Birds: Monsters and Missletoe

Every three months Angry Birds Comics Quarterly comes out. If you like the fun that the animated Angry Birds series has then you’ll really like this oversized comic book. This is good, silly fun that ages 6 and up will enjoy, want to read (or at least try to) and laugh at the pigs as they get what’s coming to them.

If you’re here for the printed version of a look at some cool all ages comics here are three that’ll entertain readers as young as 6.

Disney Princess

From Joe Book the Disney Princess series has new stories from Belle, Airel, Tiana, Cinderalla and more. Think of a Disney Princess and she’ll be in this series. It consists of new stories that ages 6 and up will laugh, swoon and imagine themselves in their own ivory-towered palace.

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II is the sequel to a very popular mini-series of the same name. In this mini-series Donatello inadvertently opens a door way to another reality while looking for a way to improve his fighting skills. Even worse the door he opens up allows Bane to go to NYC to where the TMNT live. This mini-series will be great for kids 9 and up. It’s important to note that this is the version of TMNT that skews slightly older than TMNT Adventures.

Chimichanga: The World’s Worst Face

Chimichanga: The World’s Worst Face is the story of a traveling circus with all manner of rarely seen creatures. It’s also a very unlikely fabulous all ages comic book. From Dark Horse Comics, Chimichanga has laughs, teaches kids a lesson and provides just enough fright to put them on edge. This is a fun comic book that has a zippy, carefree, meandering spirit that not enough comic books for young readers have.

All ages comics for November 29

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube video we’ll go over Uncle Scrooge from IDW Publishing, Underdog from American Mythology Productions, Star Wars Adventures from IDW Publishing and a couple more that readers as  young as 6 will enjoy. Here’s a look at three all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

Voltron Legendary Defender

Voltron Legendary Defender is from Lion Forge is the comic book parallel to the very popular show on Netflix. The art in the comic is sharp and almost identical to what’s seen in the show. This is another way for kids 6 and up to get some great comic book action without having to watch television. It’s also very smart and delivers more than just ‘kids join to make giant robots in space’.

Uncle Scrooge

Uncle Scrooge is from IDW Publishing and has vocabulary that’s out of range of most 6 year olds, but they’ll still want to look at the pictures. 8 year old Disney fans will enjoy reading about Scrooge, his exploits to save money or thwart criminals.

Powerpuff Girls

Hip elementary school girls and older love Powerpuff Girls. In their 19th year as characters it follows Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup who are three kindergarten girls. The age range that enjoys this series is amazing. It can be appreciated by young readers, but has enough pop culture references and jokes (that aren’t offensive to younger audiences) that older readers will enjoy it too.

All ages comics for November 15

What are the all ages comics this week? In the podcast and YouTube video we’ll go over Dogs from :01 First Second, Adventure Time Comics, Bolivar, Simpsons Comics and Mech Cadet Yu (one of the best all ages comics of the year!). Another book that we’ll talk about is A Polar Bear In Love, it’s a manga and will resonate with animal lovers or those that want a simple manga that starts with the first issue.   Here’s a look at three all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

Secret Sons #10

From DC Comics, Super Sons is the story about Damian and Jon, who are the sons of Batman and Superman. For parents: it’s not as bad as it sounds and kids will really enjoy it. It’s got enough superhero action that one would expect, while also teaching kids the mythos of Batman and Supes. This issue is a great jumping on point because they’re starting a new arc with the two tween heroes getting their own superhero digs.

Over the Garden Wall #20

Over the Garden Wall issue #20 is from Boom! Studios and has legions of fans from the Cartoon Network Show. Middle school students will follow along to the characters from show that they already love in new, ongoing adventures. The reading level is appropriate for upper elementary school and older, but the dry humor is going to be appropriate for ages 10 and up.

Your Pal Archie #4

Riverdale is everywhere, but it all started with some all ages comics and the characters that live there. Your Pal Archie is a new series from Archie Comics that is drawn in the classic Archie style. Whereas Archie is geared to tween audiences and has situations that are older, Your Pal Archie is old school Archie. This is wacky hijinks, physical gags and Archie being banned from Mr. Lodge’s house, but then ends up driving his limousine. This is the Archie to reach for if you want new stories from Riverdale that are appropriate for ages 6 and up.

What are the all ages comics this week? As with past years, the week immediately after Halloween is skinny, but don’t let that put you off from visiting your local comic book store. The 900 pound gorilla this week is actually a book. It’s book 12 in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, The Getaway. The Heffley family is leaving town and going someplace tropical. Expect venomous insects, family in-fighting, teen angst, lots of comic situations and many stick figures in the book. Grades two and up will be able to read these books, with their sweet spot being upper elementary to low middle school. We’ll detail some more graphic novels, books and comics in the podcast and YouTube video.  Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

The Archies, issue #2

Riverdale has brought forth lots of new adventures. The Archies is the comic book brother to Archie, which is the print originator to the very popular Riverdale on the CW. The Archies is one of those almost all ages comics that will be of interest to middle school students and older. There is nothing graphic in the content for younger readers; it’s just that they won’t identify with the stories as much. The Archies follows Archie Andrews and the story of his band. Because of that, older middle school students who are in band or play an instrument will really identify with this book.

Nathan hale, hazardous tales, raid of no return, reds planet, friends and foes, reds planet friends and foes, graphic novel, all ages comics, squirrel girl, my little pony, MLP, the archies, diary of a wimpy kid, the getaway, all ages comics

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, #60

The Cutie Mark Crusaders are trying to come to terms with one of their own who is unsure about following the family way. My Little Pony is a classic, with characters that generations of elementary school girls have followed, read and dressed up as. Girls aged 7 through 9 should love this comic book. In this issue the aforementioned pony is having a coming of age crisis-do they do what they want to do or what they think others want them to?

Squirrel Girl, issue #26

Squirrel Girl is one of the most creative, bizarre and interesting almost all ages comics that you get every month. This series is great for kids in middle school and up who want something that’s well written and unexpected. Issue #26 of Squirrel Girl takes that spirit and amps it up for a special one-shot of things you don’t expect. This is funny, surreal and a superhero unlike others who does it all while maneuvering high school, albeit with a large tail.

Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes

Red’s Planet, Friends and Foes is one of the best graphic novels of the year. The fact that it’s an all ages graphic novel is even more remarkable. Red is a young girl who is on an alien planet. She’s making the best of it and in her second book she’s coming to terms with its residents, leadership and new aliens. From the sharp art, beautiful drawings and funny, personable characters this is one graphic novel that kids 7 and up will immediately love.

Nathan Hale’s, Raid of No Return from the Hazardous Tales series

Nathan Hale tells true tales about history through graphic novels. Because the stories are real and often take place in wartime, they’re suited for readers in middle school. Raid of No Return is the 7th book in his Hazardous Tales book series and details the little known story about a team of soldiers from the USA who were on a secret mission to Japan in WWII. Their plane was detected before arriving in Tokyo and the story of what happened to the soldiers is amazing. This is history. It’s approachable history for readers without being graphic or going into the hard realities of war.

New all ages comics for November 1

What are the new all ages comics this week? It’s a great week for some all age graphic novels including the sequel to one of our favorites from last year, Dream Jumper. Dream Jumper, Curse of the Harvester continues the story of Ben, who is now in the business of dream jumping and business is booming; but a new force in the dream world is about to cause chaos. Dream Jumper is a great graphic novel series from Graphix for ages 7 and up. Also in the podcast we’ll talk about Snow White, a new Mutts Treasure called #LoveMutts, Dog Man and more. Here’s a look at five new all ages comics that you’ll want to pay attention that are in stores.

For Better or Worse

For Better or Worse The Complete Library is for the fans of this classic comic strip. This strip started in 1979 and ran through 2008. For Better or Worse is still in over 2,000 newspapers as reruns. This book was done with creator’s Lynne Johnston’s help and tracks the Patterson family through key points of their three decades in print. This was one of the few comic strips that had their characters age. Fans of the strip still remember reading about the death of Farley, the Patterson’s first English Sheepdog.

Simpsons Comics Explosion

Because you might not be able to purchase every issue of Simpsons Comics…..Simpsons Comics Explosion is published annually. This is a whopping 96 pages of bright blue hair, yellow skin, blue onsie, white shirt fun from Springfield’s favorite mess of a family, the Simpsons. Issue #4 of Simpsons Comic Explosion has Homer taking on a job as a stand-in for Krusty, a Professor Fink story, a Power Plants Vs. Zombies story and much more. Priced at $9.99 this is for those that already like Simpsons Comics, but it’s one of the best all ages comics that kids 7 and up can pick up on a monthly basis.

Adventure Time

Adventure Time is one of the most popular shows for kids in upper elementary school and up. Realistically, the show is best enjoyed by teenagers as most of the humor and attitude will be understood by them without having to explain what is and isn’t appropriate or real. To that end, the Adventure Time comic book from Boom! Studios fills the void of younger kids who want to know Adventure Time, but whose parents don’t want them watching the show. This is one of the all ages comics that teens will legitimately enjoy, in addition to younger readers, without sacrificing cool points or incurring the distrustful eye of mom (or dad). Adventure Time #70 kicks is part 1 of 4, so it’s a nice jumping on point for new fans.

Usagi Yojimbo

Usagi Yojimbo is one of those perfect comic books. It has ninjas, action, drama, wry humor and anthropomorphic animals. Usagi Yojimbo #163 has our favorite ninja being asked for assistance from a local thief, who has been stealing in order to return things to the public. Each issue of Usagi has a story that is greater than the sum of its panels and manages to combine action, heart and consequences into each issue. Usagi Yojimbo costs $3.99 from Dark Horse Comics and is best enjoyed by ages 8 and up who like comics that concentrate on story and art.

A Die Hard Christmas

With tongue firmly in cheek and intended for ages 10 and up, A Die Hard Christmas takes its cue from “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Enter John McClain in Nakatomi Plaza, without any shoes as he evades one of the best baddies of all time Alan Rickman, who played Hans Gruber. A Die Hard Christmas will make fans of the original movie smile, but probably won’t resonate with those that haven’t seen it. Having said that I’m smiling.
