It’s new comic book day, don’t act surprised because this happens every Wednesday. That’s the day the all of the new comic books are released to your local stores. In that shipment are dozens of all age comic books that are great for readers as young as five-years old! Granted that age varies from week to week; but this is one of those weeks that has some great ones for those younger readers, plus a nice selection of older action comics for kids in upper elementary.  Over in the podcast we’ll chat about two great Disney themed releases, Mech Cadet Yu and more. If you’re looking for three go-to all age comic books that will be OK for kids 5 and up , read on.

True Believers

Marvel Comics True Believers are reprints of classic issues in the Marvel Comic cannon. This week it’s all about Fantastic Four with three issues from the 1960’s and one issue from the 1970’s. These comics are OK for readers aged 7 and up, but realistically younger kids might not be attracted to the artwork.  Ages 9 and up will enjoy these the most and anyone who purchases them will love the price of only $1.

Ducktales #10

We mentioned in the podcast before that Ducktales is back baby! They’ve got all new tales in comic books on IDW Publishing. This is an important note because many of the Disney stories that IDW puts out were previously published in another language. Ignore the fact that if it’s the first time that you’re reading it then it’s new to you anyway. These are all new stories featuring Donald’s nephews as they look for treasure, explore things, frustrate Donald and otherwise have a great time-which your Disney fan who is aged 8 and up will too.

The content in Ducktales is great for an all age comic book. The reason I’m suggesting it’s for ages 8 and up is due to the reading that required to enjoy it.

Casper and Hot Stuff #1

Similar to how IDW and some of their Disney titles publish previous stories that were in another language. American Mythology Productions has brought many of the Harvey Comics characters back so that new audiences can discover them. As a kid I still remember my neighbor who only collected Harvey Comics. We took a trip to the beach one summer and the two of us just read and traded all manner of Wendy, friends and more. My favorite title that I remember was Casper and Hot Stuff. I liked the earnestness of Casper, but I also liked the kid friendly maliciousness of Hot Stuff.

They’re back in an all story, Casper and Hot Stuff #1. This is one of those all age comic books that kids 5 and up can jump into and easily enjoy. Even their slightly surly older sibling who is 9 will enjoy this comic book.

And a Happy July 4^th to you if you’re in the U.S.; plus a belated Canada Day to our friends up there. We also wish the cat meme of your choice if you’re reading this from elsewhere, now on with the new all age comic books for the week of July 4. Is your local comic book store open on July 4^th? I don’t know, but check out Comic Book Store Locator, type in your zip code and you can contact them to check into that.

Over in the podcast we’ll chat about Hilda and the Stone Forest, a slew of Disney and DC books and a classic series of books that never go out of style with a new one this week. All of these are some of the top all age comic books for the week of July 4. In addition to that, check out these three, some of which are great for ages 5 and up.

Disney PIXAR Incredibles 2 one-shot

Have you seen Incredibles 2 yet? It’s a very good movie and proves that sequels to great PIXAR films can stand alone, even years after the first one, as worthy films that are entertaining and don’t feel like a rip off. Disney PIXAR and Joe Books take that good mojo off of the screen and into a one-shot comic book that is great for all ages. This concentrates on the family aspect of the Incredibles, expect lots of Jack-Jack, family humor and superhero action. It’ll be great for ages 5 and up, but those younger ages will need help reading the content.

True Believers Fantastic Four Coming of Galactus

True Believers is a series of comics that Marvel Comics puts out that reprints classic issues from their catalogue. Some of these issues are classics, like from the 60’s, while others are new classics like ones from the 90’s. The Coming of Galactus is an issue from the early 60’s that features Galactus and the FF. The kicker is that it’s only $1 and the content is great for any age as long as they like action. There is some reading, so younger ages won’t be able to read it without help, but they’ll love looking at the classic art.

Ghoul Scouts, I Was a Teenage Werewolf!

From the title Ghoul Scouts to the setting of this mini-series, Camp Lake Crystal, older readers know that their tongue should be fully in cheek. However, younger readers will be fully enthralled in this just-scary-enough mini-series from Action Lab Entertainment. Ghoul Scouts features five teens as they fight zombies and monsters, all the while navigating the difficult task of being a teenager and being in their home town. This is fun stuff that ages 8 and up will enjoy and parents can rest easy knowing that the content is OK too.

It’s new comic book day and this week is light on all age comic books. There are a couple great books and some cool graphic novels that are brand new. In the podcast we’ll talk about a great new graphic novel for elementary school and up from Scholastic, a Marvel book that skews even younger, Catsronauts and much more. For now though let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest ages 5 and up.

Future Quest Presents #11

Future Quest Presents is a great ongoing series from DC Comics that is made of a continuous mini-series of sorts. The common thread is Hanna-Barbera and their stock characters. Some of them aren’t household names, but that doesn’t matter as the stories are jammed with action and fun. In Future Quest Presents #11 we catch up with Dorno of the Herculoids. It’s OK if you don’t know him, by the time you get a couple pages in you’ll want more of the vibe that this comic book has throughout. This is great for ages 9 and up, just because of the amount of reading that’s required to really enjoys it.

Lumberjanes #51

Should Lumberjanes be in the humor or science-fiction category? That question’s answer varies due to what issue we’re discussing. They can range from flat out summer camp funny to science-fiction tomfoolery as they chase monsters in the forest. This monthly comic book series is one of the go-to all age comic books that people can read. Each issue is fabulous, with a side order of friendship.

Sonic the Hedgehog #6

Catch the train, the Sonic the Hedgehog train that Dr. Eggman is desperately trying to hijack. This comic book is great and produces sold out issues, which then require second or even third printings. The magic of Tracy Yardley is in full effect here and is one of those all age comic books with action, humor and a built in audience that kids 5 and up will enjoy.

It’s new comic book day and this week has something for every age reader. This is also that very special week when most of our favorite all age comic books come out. We’ll cover all of those books in the podcast. However, one of those books is highlighted in our top three all age comic books below

Spongebob Comics Annual Giant Swimtacular

Last week the monthly issue of Spongebob Comics came out, it was awesome. This week has Spongebob Comics Annual Giant Swimtacular #6 out. If you’re an older, possibly dubious fan of comic books then these one-off comic books might have a bad taste in your mouth. For some comic books that’s entirely possible, but this summer series from Spongebob Comics is new, fresh and cleans that taste out with new tales from under the sea. This is funny, tongue in cheek stuff that both of our boys have loved since they were 6 and I read it at night when they’re done. If you’re faith in all age comic books need reassurance, check out this one.

Steven Universe Ongoing #17

If you know of a kid who watches Steven Universe and really gets it, then it’s highly probably that they’re in middle or high school. This is a funny show that’s observational, a little dry and has enough action to bring along some boys who otherwise wouldn’t be attached to it. The comic book is similar to that and is great fun. In Steven Universe Ongoing #17 we see Steven and Peridot playing video games and she takes things too far. Readers aged 11 and up will be able to read this and get the most out of the comic.

Disney Tangled The Series Graphic Novel,The Write Story

If you’re a girl reader in second through sixth grade this is your jam. This is an ongoing series of original graphic novels featuring the characters from Tangled. The second one is called The Write Story and Rapunzel freaking out because she’s about to meet her favorite author. Factor in that the king embellishes Rapunzel’s life when they want to write a book about her and tall tales will rule the day. This is a funny, original graphic novel that will make kids who don’t want to read actually read. Sure there are lots of pictures, but this is gateway stuff that will give them the reading bug.

Happy new comic book day! OK, technically, NCBD is each Wednesday, but let’s celebrate early by telling you about the new all age comic books that you can pick up this week. There are lots of comics that will interest readers as young as 6. I can remember when I was a kid that age going to the book store (which also some comic books) for special treats. In my case it was on the way the dentist’s office, so a trip to get a comic book was the carrot for going to get my teeth checked out. There are still lots of cool all age comic books for kids out this week. Over in the podcast we’ll chat about some great new Disney releases from IDW and Joe Books, a great new team up from Marvel Comics, Plants vs. Zombies, two great monster comics and more. For now, here are three cool comics that your elementary school kids and older will dig.

True Believers: Ant-Man & Wasp

This is not all about Ant-Man & Wasp. Their upcoming film is rated PG-13, which might be too much for some elementary school kids. True Believers is a series of previously released comic books from Marvel Comics. These could be landmark issues, character introductions or first issues that were published in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or 90’s, but in this new re-printed version they’re only $1. True Believers reprints lots of cool, classic Marvel issues and every one that we’ve seen is OK for our 6 year old. That’s because what was questionable for kids then, is now passé and acceptable. A 6YO in 1959 reading Tales to Astonish #57 might have seemed like lax parenting then, but now it’s done at a price point and level that’s OK for kids.

Plants Vs. Zombies, Volume 10: Rumble at Lake Gumbo

Kids in second grade and higher love Plants Vs. Zombies. Actually you will love Plants Vs. Zombies also once you read it. The monthly comic book series from Dark Horse Comics stopped a couple years ago, but they’ve kept their word at producing regular new, graphic novels. Rumble at Lake Gumbo is the latest original graphic novel to feature Zomboss, Crazy Dave and the rest in this equally funny and action packed story. This is one of those all age comic books, or in this case graphic novels, that will entertain anyone who picks it up; regardless of age.

Marvel Rising Alpha #1

Squirrel Girl is a great ongoing comic book. Ms. Marvel is a great ongoing comic book. It only makes sense that they should meet. Doreen Green (Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) volunteers as a counselor for computer class. Said class also has Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) as the junior counselor. Think Lumberjanes, but with super-heroes, two great ones at that and this is an issue that says “Pick me up”. Marvel Rising Alpha is appropriate for ages 8 and up.

It’s another new comic book day and with it comes dozens of cool new all age comic books. In the podcast we’ll chat about a new Adventure Time mini-series, the DC/Hanna Barbera mash up, Dodo and more. However, for now let’s look at three all age comic books that will interest boys or girls as young as 6 years old.

Pink Panther 55^th Anniversary

A 55^th anniversary is not a landmark type event like 25 or 50, but if it’s got Pink Panther in it then our 6  year old will be game for it. The Pink Panther comic books from American Mythology have been a staple in our house since they resurrected the characters a couple of years ago. Pink Panther 55^th Anniversary Special #1 has some new stories, a couple classic ones and some one-page funnies. Our now 8 year-old had loved this since this new incarnation and yours will too.

Black Lightning/Hong Kong Fuey

Hong Kong Fuey, the classic Hanna Barbera character sets up a detective agency in the inner city. Black Lightning has discovered a plot by three assassins to discover the secret to a martial arts magic that’s being held by dog. Take my money. If you remember Hong Kong Fuey and some of the other Hanna Barbera characters from the 70’s you’ll run to get this one-shot issue

Sonic the Hedgehog #5

Sonic the Hedgehog is on a roll. He’s five issues into his new regular series for all age comic books and most of the issues have been through two printings! That’s a big deal, it means the people like the story, enjoy the action and are eager to purchase more Sonic the Hedgehog. Issue #5 of Sonic the Hedgehog is a great starting point because it’s the first one of a multi-book arc that’s bound to entertain kids 6 and up.

Everybody back in the pool, Free Comic Book Day was last week. This is a great chance to visit that comic book store again, to see the new all age comic books that arrive on Wednesday. Just as FCBD happens the first Saturday in May, new comic book day (#NCBD) is every Wednesday and this week has a nice selection of all age comic books that’ll prove to kids 6 and up that FCBD offers more than just freebies once a year. Over in the podcast we’ll chat about Peanuts Vol. 9 from Boom! Studios, Star Wars Block from Abrams Books, a Phoebe and Her Unicorn board book, plus two books with geek roots that’ll inspire tween girls to read. For now, let’s look at three all age comic books that will entertain young readers aged 6 and up.

Jim Henson Fraggle Rock #1

It’s 35 years of Fraggle Rock and Boom! Studios has a gorgeous new four-issue mini-series to celebrate with Mokey, Gobo, Wembley, Red and the others. This is a simpler mini-series than the one that came out a couple of years ago. It’s also impeccably beautiful, drawn with love and painted with watercolor. Kids aged 6 and up won’t be able to read it, but they will love (hint, hint….) to have it read to them. The spoken dialogue, in addition to the art that they will be able to appreciate will make them want to visit Fraggle Rock over and over.

Spongebob Comics #80

Patrick wants to live in a kelp maze. Mr. Krabs has his miserly heart set upon winning an Underwater Book of Records award and Squidward and Spongebob are in the kitchen cooking. This is one of the best all age comic books that you’ll pick up on any given month. It’s $3.99 and our 8-year old has been reading it since he was 5. Disclosure: we read it also and adults who allow themselves to truly relax will enjoy it also.

Star Wars Block

The Block books from Abrams Books are phenomenal. They’re board books that have previously taken a look at cities, the alphabet, dinosaurs and numbers. Board books you scoff….but these are the cleverest, highest quality, board books that we’ve seen. Each page folds out to display a key image that Star Wars fans, young and old will immediately recognize. The text in Star Wars Block will be appropriate for any age, while those who are 6 and will be able to read some of the sight words by themselves. As a testament to how well constructed these books are, we still have our Alphablock book from 2013, it’s taught two children and still holds up physically, with its pages and fold outs intact.
