Here’s why I cut off the crust to our son’s sandwich

Prior to being a parent it was easy for me to judge.  Sheesh those kids are loud-Why is that person bringing a stroller in here-really, a child at a beer festival?   Now that I’m a parent the only one of those situations that makes sense is the beer festival one, really people, get a sitter.  One of the more popular stereotypes that I finally bought into is cutting the crust off of our son’s sandwich.

Why it's OK to cut the crust off your kid's sandwich-Daddy Mojo

iRules-detailed tips for parents on technology and children

Daddy Mojo works in social media, I work in technology and I’m also very nosey when it comes to our children – so I haven’t been very concerned with the iDevice revolution. I have a device and so does my husband, so to protect our children all we have to do is secure the connection in our house, right? Wrong.  iRules discusses different elements of incorporating technology into your family – from the devices themselves to the rules and developing technologically responsible children.

The precipice at the end of the school year

At the playground the other day after school I was near some moms.  I overheard their conversation where one of them was talking about how their husband didn’t understand the fact that she was dreading the coming end of school.  “oh, you have to drive around and run errands with the kids”, she said that he had sarcastically said.  Initially my ‘Dad Inequality’ gag reflex was triggered, but then I listened, thought about it and realized that she was 100% correct. The Precicipice at the end of the school year Continue reading The precipice at the end of the school year

Got a funny mess? The Clorox Ick Awards: #Ickies 4/9, 6-10PM ET #SP

Prior to being a dad the biggest mess I experienced were the ones that I made, so they didn’t seem that big.  My car or house may have been unsightly-and it might’ve reduced the number of dates that I had, but that was it.  Clorox is working with How to be a Dad for an online event all about messes that is part twitter party, video improv and$2,500 in prizes.

Parenting studies are garbage, unless they agree with me

Strict parenting linked to higher obesity rates in children!  Parenting like a Tiger Mom will make your kids obese!  A  Tiger Mom gives birth in the London Zoo!  Wait, that’s a real tiger giving birth to three cubs in the London Zoo.  There seems to be a constant maelstrom of parenting nonsense stories that bait headlines more efficiently than Topless Photos of Jennifer Anniston.

St. Baldrick’s is this weekend-Can you help?

It’s a cliché to say that Cancer sucks, but it does.  It’s the world’s worst night club with the DJ only having one song, it’s one you don’t like and it’s being repeated all night.  That song is a Cancer cell, a rogue cell that keeps cloning, over and over.  If it spreads, or metastasizes then it’s going to other organs and will cause real damage, in many cases terminal.  St. Baldrick’s is happening soon, it’s a fundraiser to raise money for children’s Cancer-can you help?

Are you going to a St. Baldrick’s event this weekend? You can support the cause in advance or when you show up-either way it’s going to a worthy cause.

Pity the lawyers that don’t earn enough for a house husband

Time magazine had an article recently on super achieving moms on Wall Street and their stay-at-home husbands.  The same author did a follow up piece on her blog that broke it down even further about being a house husband to a power mom on Wall Street.    Her conclusion and the comments  on the Time website offer insight into both sides.  They also provide a compelling argument for tort reform and a good excuse to lovingly smack any lawyer who thinks that they don’t earn enough money.

A chat with Mike von Grey, father of indie/alt/folk rock group von Grey

As a dad to two young boys I imagine how difficult it must be to be a dad to teenage girls.  But what if you were the father to four teenagers, all of whom were in a band?  And then that band started getting phone calls from Sarah McLaughlin to open up for her on concert, play SXSW, Conan, Letterman, Rock Center on NBC and have their debut EP land in the top 10 on iTunes?  Which is more difficult, how to handle four teenage girls or how to manage an up and coming folk/rock group with bookings all across the country and interviews with major publications?
