Recently we had a family cat cross over the rainbow bridge. Ripley was an older cat, had some sudden health issues and died. One of the first thoughts I had afterwards was how do we tell our oldest son that one of the cats died? He’s always been close with the animals, all of whom are older, and teaching him about death isn’t something that I had given any thought to. So how do you teach young children about death?

Is it wrong that I’m glad our oldest son likes blue and not pink?
The other day we were shopping and I asked our 4 year old what bubble bath he wanted. I showed him two bottles. “The pink one is for girls”, he said. I agreed with him, but didn’t say anything because pink is for girls, as we walked towards the feminine product to purchase tampons for my wife. The Halloway house party and the parents who enabled it
Brian Halloway is a retired football player that lives in Florida now, but still has a house in upstate New York. Over Labor Day his house was broken into and approximately 300 teens thoroughly trashed it. Being teenagers they posted photos from the event which alerted him to the Halloway house party. It’s easy to blame the teens, who are ultimately to blame; however, the behavior of the teen’s parents is even more appalling. Continue reading The Halloway house party and the parents who enabled it
Momagers, mom and dad to the job interview are red flags for life
If the article weren’t in The Wall Street Journal I would swear that it came from The Onion. The title of the article, Should You Bring Mom and Dad to The Job Interview is about how Millennials are bringing their parents to the workplace. As a stay at home dad these moments have to be timed and need to happen during the late morning or early afternoon for me to make it to the finish line. Starbucks and Life of Dad have teamed up on a groovy contest to highlight how important coffee can be to us all. Continue reading The Starbucks #VIA Moment Instagram contest #Spon
Being a better parent means thinking like a lawyer
Being a parent requires you to wear many hats. Some of these hats, or professions you may have had no practical experience with, but they will help you in dealing with your children. Earlier we mentioned the skill sets of a waiter that are needed by all parents. Now that we have one child who can engage in conversations we’ve discovered the need to work like a waiter and think like a lawyer. Continue reading Being a better parent means thinking like a lawyer
Our family lessons learned between the first and second child
Our youngest will turn 2 years old in a couple of months. The cliché that the time flies by is every so true. You can’t believe they were ever that small and so forth. The bending of time that happens after the second child is born is quick, you blink and suddenly they’re 2 years old. If I could talk to myself a couple of months before our second child arrived here is a list of things that I would suggest.
