Giving things from the Heart of Haiti this Christmas holiday

The fourth anniversary of the Haitian earthquake is approaching.  In January 2010 200,000-300,000 people were killed and almost 1.3 million were displaced.  As a member of the Everywhere Society they informed me about a project called Heart of Haiti that partners with Macy’s in supporting local Haitian artists.

The Pocket Hose review: cheap design and easily broken

I have an unwritten rule:  Never, ever buy anything that I see “As Seen on TV”.  If that product makes it to the store, then I might give it a shot.  Enter the Pocket Hose, it seems logical that it should work, my traditional hose is heavy and this is only $20, so I’ll give it a shot.  Alas, this pocket hose review does not have a happy ending as two of them broke within one week of use. Lessons that children can learn from the garden #Sponsored

I remember the first time I discovered that you could have an herb garden at your house.  It was in the Italian Mediterranean, near the mountain principality of Seborga.  One of my friends casually mentioned that he was going outside to get some fresh basil for the pasta.  Woah, you can just go out and pick basil-you Italians have it going on, I thought to myself.

Of course, since then I’ve planted herb gardens of my own and have been quite successful at it.  Now that I have a child who’s old enough to help I’ve discovered a couple of ways that they can genuinely help out.  I wrote an article for the SC Johnson Green Choices blog on the 5 things that your young child can learn from the herb garden.

The Skil 360 Quick Select- fun to use & unlike any drill you own-Giveaway

It’s great when common and accepted devices undergo radical changes.  The T-handle handheld screwdrivers were like that when we first got them.  The Skil 360 Quick Select has some of the most subtle, yet radical changes to a power screw driver that you’ll ever see.  The 12 bits are inside a revolving chamber, the device can be charged via a USB port and it has a light to guide you as you’re screwing something in or out.  Literally all you need is Twiki from Buck Rogers to come out and start doing your work for you, but then you’d get all distracted by Erin Gray and you’ve got work to do, so hop to it.  Continue reading The Skil 360 Quick Select- fun to use & unlike any drill you own-Giveaway

Planning for a dog’s 4th of July and their nutrition #cbias #ad

In my previous life I worked at a large humane society where I did their social media and fundraising for five years.  During that time I heard hundreds of animal tales, learned about healthy dog treats and basic pet safety.   The 4th of July is great fun for humans, but can be a life altering day for dogs.  For us we’re going to treat our guys to some chicken jerky for dogs, BBQ at home and be thankful for all that we have. A toilet that uses less water: the Delta Corrente Toilet review

At my first house I put a sealed jar of water in the toilet basin in an effort to save money. Archimedes would’ve been proud of me, but even after doing that, the toilet still used over 2.5 gallons of water each time it flushed.  Our new house has better toilets that use less water, but they have just been lapped by the Delta Corrente Toilet. For Father’s Day I got a gift I didn’t want: Melanoma

If there were a medical condition return window I’d run there now and return this Melanoma.  The first time you hear Melanoma it sounds not too unpleasant.  I like melons and “oma” sounds like ‘the land of’, why I’ll take a trip to Melanoma thank you very much.  Alas, in reality Melanoma is skin cancer, in my case brought on by a good mole gone bad. Naptime DIY: How to repair a vacuum cleaner hose

We needed a simple vacuum cleaner, nothing elaborate.  Granted a more expensive vacuum cleaner would be nice, but until I experience it firsthand it’s an expense that can’t be justified.  What to do when you average vacuum cleaner needed a small repair? Continue reading Naptime DIY: How to repair a vacuum cleaner hose
