John Carter is escapist, sci-fi fun that’s good for the family

From the preview that I saw I had already written the review to John Carter in my mind.  I had heard the negative hype on the movie and some of the trailers didn’t look engaging.  Actually going to ‘see’ the movie was kind of an afterthought and a good excuse to get me out of the house.  About ¼ of the way through John Carter I was eating crow, fully engrossed in the film and loving every minute of it. The new Van Halen could easily be called 1986-in a good way

Guys of a certain age grew up with Van Halen.  Sure ‘Van Halen’ put out music after 1984, but it never had the same flair.  Van Halen’s music always danced a line between playful, menacing and sinister.  You wanted to believe that the four of them were great friends, but after 1984 you realized that they were just a band. Act of Valor is an enjoyable, unique, taut action movie

Act of Valor is an action film that features active duty Navy SEALs.  I had been following the previews and press for the film ever since I heard about its production.  Yeah, it could be a gimmicky thing to cast real Navy SEALs instead of actors, but the action that they showed in the trailers looked very tight.  While not perfect, Act of Valor was entertaining and authentic. Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I love my wife.   Having said that, it’s good to watch a movie when she’s not around; no judgments- just me, beer, cats on the sofa and dogs by the fireplace.  On this occasion I finally got around to watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Continue reading Dad spends a night in the mancave: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Satellite TV, the family and valuable Mancave time

When you live on your own, watching TV is possibly the easiest thing in the world. Not only does it require no effort, but you don’t have to share it with anybody, not that I’m bad with sharing or anything.  I like to watch TV, so when I was approached by Satellite TV to write a post on it and the family it was a natural fit.   On your own, the TV is 100% your domain and you’re free to watch any shows or movies you want to.  That’s one reason why I like doing the Mancave movies so much; I don’t have to worry about whether they are enjoyable or appropriate for anyone else. Blue Ivy and other bizarre baby names

Congratulations go out to Jay Z and Beyonce who welcomed their first child into the world.  Congratulation also goes out to them for joining other (mainly) celebrities who’ve given their child a bizarre, potentially punitive name.  Continue reading Blue Ivy and other bizarre baby names

Mission Impossible 4 in IMAX is large and in charge action fun

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is the 4th entry in the franchise and easily the most entertaining out of all of them.  The movie takes advantage of the picturesque scenery in Moscow, Dubai and Mumbai to all but require watching the film in IMAX.  I saw the film in IMAX and the difference in the scenes shot in IMAX and those that weren’t are like comparing an LP to an MP3 file. Continue reading Mission Impossible 4 in IMAX is large and in charge action fun
