Timing is everything, with that said the release of Won’t Back Down couldn’t be better. The Chicago Teachers Union strike just ended and charter school amendments are on many local ballots this November. A movie hasn’t received this coincidentally beneficial timing since The China Syndrome in 1979. Continue reading Won’t Back Down is like the New Kids on the Block

Hotel Transylvania is not worth checking into
Hotel Transylvania is an animated move about Count Dracula opening up a high end hotel that caters to monsters. The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, a family of werewolves and other monsters come to the hotel to celebrate Mavis (Dracula’s daughter) 118 birthday. The monsters fear humans and everything is fine at the hotel until Jonathan (a hapless human), backpacking across Europe gets lost and ends up at the hotel. An old fan boy goes digital with Gotham Spirit and others
I cursed my closet fan boy self when I realized that I missed National Comic Book Day. Not that I needed an excuse to go to the comic book store, but it would’ve given me a reason to opine what’s going on in the world of comics & graphic novels. Thankfully the internet and blog don’t need to respect the laws of time….so let’s go! Continue reading An old fan boy goes digital with Gotham Spirit and others
A Father First by Dwayne Wade misses a layup
I’m a dad that is not a sports fan. I know the big names, but I don’t have any idea what position they play or how their last game was. Dwayne Wade is a superstar basketball player with the Miami Heat. If you’re like me you thought that he was a character from A Different World. “A Father First” is his life story that takes readers from his impoverished beginnings in Chicago to living the high life in Miami. Continue reading A Father First by Dwayne Wade misses a layup
Preschool Gems is a great toilet book and that’s a good thing
The books that have occupied my bathroom reading have changed through the years. The constant for the past number of years has been The Far Side. During my 20’s The Duct Tape book was there; along with some men’s fashion magazine that I never followed the clothing or grooming advice to. My bathroom reading is still evolving now that I’m married and have children who are old enough to form somewhat coherent sentences. Continue reading Preschool Gems is a great toilet book and that’s a good thing
Dad reads Star Wars-Crimson Empire III Empire Lost
Star Wars, Crimson Empire III: Empire Lost is the long awaited sequel to Crimson Empire II. Long awaited can be a mixed blessing. Is it long awaited because fans lost interest, it wasn’t good enough to merit a quick release or the company is pushing it? In the Star Wars universe some things take time and this delayed sequel is a result of story changes and schedules not due to demand. Continue reading Dad reads Star Wars-Crimson Empire III Empire Lost
Kirby: Genesis Vol. 1, trade paperback-Review
I received the PDF for this graphic novel just over a month ago. I read it in a couple of days and have procrastinated reviewing it because every time I opened it to review it I couldn’t stop reading or looking at the art. Granted I’m somewhat easily distracted (look-a kitten!), but Genesis sucked me into an old school comic world I haven’t seen in a while. Continue reading Kirby: Genesis Vol. 1, trade paperback-Review
Dad spends a night in the mancave: Safe
Jason Statham movies need to be reviewed by an entirely separate grading system. For the most part he plays a policeman/military guy who has been framed or had his family hurt. When Statham steps out of that stereotype he can shine as an actor, for proof of that just look The Transporter, Italian Job and Bank Job. Continue reading Dad spends a night in the mancave: Safe
