Calls for the National Geographic Bee are open to schools

When I was in 7th grade one of the smartest people in our class was Doug. One of his party tricks, for lack of a better term was his in-depth knowledge of world countries and their capitals. During one slow class I remember him talking about Togo and its capital, Lome. Everyone in the class had never even heard of Togo and here he was schooling us on things about this relatively small African country. The questions that I’ve seen in the National Geographic Bee aren’t all that difficult; but it’s something that Doug would’ve certainly been our school champion at.

These are the three items at Best Buy that you need to save money #ad

We were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own and we really do like faster downloads, streaming TV, saving money and watching live TV. My wife and I are a great team and we each know our role. She’s the type that is less likely to start something while I’m the one that is less likely to complete a project. Know your role. Knowing that about us, I just completed three tasks from start to finish that will save the family money, entertain us more, frustrate us less and it all took less than one hour to accomplish. We installed a Nest Learning Thermostat, Netgear Nighthawk DST Router with DST Adapter and Sling TV; all from Best Buy, with each one doing amazing things.

The Magic School Bus Season Four drives on with manic, educational abandon

When Then Magic School Bus was originally on the air I was already out of college. In hindsight the mid 90s was a fabulous time for children’s programming. Even then I was a fan of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, as well as, Wallace and Gromit. Both of these series I still like watching, plus it’s something that our children can watch and enjoy too. The final season of The Magic School Bus is out on DVD in a two disc collection that puts a bow on a series that was as entertaining as it was educational.

Technology, meet Halloween, Halloween this is technology; now let’s have this conversation in our house. Of course, Best Buy has a seat here too.  Star Wars, or at least a licensed toy from the latest movie are also talking at the table-and it’s all done in the name of good natured fun, simple to accomplish Halloween pranks that you can do around the house.

The New Yoda Chronicles lovingly pokes the Force from all sides

Star Wars is such a massive cultural juggernaut that a little gentle poking and being made fun of is necessary. Don’t get me wrong, I do love Star Wars, but I also enjoy other fun things. For instance, LEGO makes fabulous shows (and films) that skew pop culture in a family friendly way that respects the source material while creating something that is entirely unique.  Star Wars The New Yoda Chronicles is out on DVD and brings all of the wit, charm and action that you expect from their brick-animated creations.

The LEGO Adventure Book, Vol. 3, mid to advanced fun brick projects to do and view

Excuse me as I get into my grumpy middle aged man voice. When I was growing up there were no LEGO sets. It was only bricks; very few of them curved and they were only red, white and blue. Now you can create all manner of branded ships, characters, houses and fortresses. But what about the free range builders? Occasionally I’ll look at bulk LEGO collections on eBay. This is the free range, creative building that I do in my imagination and is on full display in The LEGO Adventure Book, Vol. 3.

Home by Tim Kubert is a picture perfect (kindie) treat

The brilliance of the Muppets was that despite the fact that it was packaged and written for children it entertained adults as much, if not more. That is what really great children’s entertainment does.  Phineas & Ferb does it that way too. Home by Tim Kubert is the kindie equivalent to them.  It’s packed with great (kindie) music that can legitimately entertain kids and adults without dumbing down the content or demoing it up unnecessarily.
