4 things families need to know before attending Monster Jam

Saturday, Saturday, Saturday. Insert a day of the week, say it three times in your announcer voice and people immediately know what you’re talking about. Monster Jam. Our kids are somewhat older so we can finally start introducing them to the pleasures of large trucks with big wheels getting massive air from dirt jumps. Monster Jam is pure Americana family fun. It’s for everyone, will leave the kids pumped up and breathless, but there some things that families need to know before visiting.

Skylanders SuperChargers teams with Autism Speaks to raise money

Our 6 year old loves to play Skylanders SuperChargers. Shocking, a 6 year old that likes video games I know. However, what is good for parents and by default, children, is that Skylanders SuperChargers is a near all age perfect game that the entire family can enjoy. I say ‘near all age’ because the game is rated 6+, so younger brothers or sisters can’t get in on the Skylands action yet. Skylanders has partnered with Autism Speaks to create some Power Blue SuperChargers vehicles and characters in honor of Autism Awareness Month.

Zootopia is semi-deep end Disney, fun animation with a soft message

Zootopia is a fascinating movie because one hand it’s a well done animated film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Sure, one expects their films to be well made, but what is surprising about Zootopia is how the plot can be looked at from entirely different perspectives, depending on your age. Recap: don’t trust anyone over 30. Every animal in the world has no predatory instincts. Those that used to kill and eat other animals no longer do. Every critter is domesticated and in Zootopia all of anthropomorphic species are living together in close quarters.

Comics Squad Lunch is near perfect all age comic fun

When you go to your local comic book store visit the all age book section. Most likely it’s near the front of the store where they keep the all age graphic novels and chapter books. We saw Comics Squad: Lunch! on top of the counter and immediately fell in love with it. Eight different comic authors have created new stories with a common theme, in this case lunch. This book is the sequel to Comic Squad:  Recess and is as perfect an introduction to all age comics as you’ll find.

Are You Listening by The Not-It’s, if not, you should be

I remember asking my father something when I was a child. He responded something along the lines of I still think like I’m in my 20’s, it just that responsibility has caught up with me. It wasn’t that profound, but his point was that his mind and interests were still the same, albeit with a couple (me and my sister) new ones. That mentality is the way I see The Not-It’s. Each member of The Not-It’s has pedigree in the Sub Pop era sound and 90’s style power pop. Their latest release, Are You Listening? presents the same spirit and alt rock chords, but with the kindie sensibilities that parents need for their children.

Yo-Kai Watch toys, trading and role playing in a (spirit) material world

I was compensated both financially and in product by Hasbro for the #YokaiWatch campaign. All opinions are ours.  To some parents Yo-Kai Watch is Greek. it’s that foreign thing that kids dig but parents can’t tell their Yo-Kai from their spectral anomalies. In actuality, Yo-Kai Watch isn’t Greek at all, it’s Japanese.  It’s an anime show that took Japan by storm and is now in the U.S. As go the shows, so go the toys and the Yo-Kai Watch toys from Hasbro are here, full of imagination based play-with a touch of collection, mischief and giggles.

The Smurfs on Nintendo 3DS, Smurfing good gaming fun

Hey, we received a copy of the game for review, all thoughts are our own. No Smurfing way. Your favorite friendly blue characters have found themselves in a predicament. They’ve gone for a walk in the forest only to come back and find their entire village destroyed! All of their trademark mushroom houses are reduced to ripped up fungi, as well as the scaled down tables, chairs and everything else. Thankfully they live in a forest where the Smurfs can go out and gather wood, rocks and other materials to build it all again. Or rather, you can rebuild Smurf village and hopefully find out who smashed it all to bits.
