Unicorn Princesses is 7-10 year old, girl reading fun

Our seven year old ran into the office looking for something to read. He quickly picked up Unicorn Princesses Sunbeam’s Shine and asked me why I was reading it. From the bright yellow unicorn on the cover to the glitter in its hair and collar it’s obvious that this series is not intended for boys. “Eewww, I don’t want to read that”, he said, “but Susie would probably love to read it”. She’s his typical friend at school that loves unicorns, horses and more unicorns. In other words, The Unicorn Princesses book series by Emily Bliss on Bloomsbury Children’s Books are her jam.

Guardians of the Galaxy 1000 Dot-to-Dot adds up to fun for 7 and up

Our seven year old doesn’t know who Thanos is. Truth be told, I don’t know the complete mythos of Thanos either, other than the fact that he’s the top of the food chain in villains for Marvel Comics. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was a great movie. The monthly comic book is one of the most consistently entertaining comics for us and now Guardians of the Galaxy 1000 Dot-to-Dot Book by Thunder Bay Press continues in their line of challenging, yet achievable mind puzzles.

Marvel, guardians of the galaxy, guardians of the galaxy dot to dot, rocket, groot, Thomas pavitte, Marvel heroes,

The Rise of the Rusty Robo-Cat is doodle-rific for creative kids

The Rise of the Rusty Robo-Cat is the third book in the Doodle Adventures book series by Mike Lowery. Just a couple weeks prior to its release our 7 year old asked when the next doodle book was coming out. It’s fascinating what kids remember and what they like isn’t it? I didn’t even think that he remembered The Pesky Pizza Pirate and here he was asking if another book was coming out.

The Song From Somewhere Else, YA mystery with quality

Books do not come with visual effects. They’re books, consisting of words on paper that take you away, make you think, laugh or care about something without leaving your space. The Song From Somewhere Else is a YA book; but it has a palpable sense of dread, mystery and growing up that creates a layer of fog that surrounds you whilst reading it. It’s important here not to confuse fog with a lack of direction. The book knows where it’s going; it just does a great job of keeping audiences guessing.

Hey Boy is a kidlit, children’s book for the pet lover’s soul

Children’s books, as a parenting rule, shouldn’t make you cry. Children are unable to discern why mom or dad are crying, even laughing so hard that you’re crying sends mixed signals to young children. Hey Boy is a children’s book from Benjamin Strouse with illustrations by Jennifer Phelan. At first it seems out of place when compared to bright colored children’s books with large font and silly/sappy endings. Technically this book and those books aim for the same reader. However, Hey Boy has a more timeless, retrained presence that will draw young readers in through its measured tone, grander scope and hopeless optimism.

Despicable Me 3 vs. Cars 3-What should the family see?

Despicable Me 3 and Cars 3 are out within two weeks of each other. They both target the same audience, those families that want a good film to take the kids to when summer requires a break or just 90 minutes inside the air conditioning with the smell of popcorn everywhere. Both films are entertaining, but there are differences that might influence how you decide to spend your precious movie theater dollars.

In this corner, Cars 3, the G-rated juggernaut from Walt Disney that is one of the most popular franchises in the world. Children love these characters; have birthday parties after them and their parents purchases million of dollars in Cars merchandise. As a film Cars 3 returns to the quality roots of the franchise. Forget the silly spy escapades of Cars 2 because with Cars 3 it’s back to the track with an aging Lightning McQueen.

Puss in Boots: Trapped in an Epic Tale on Netflix breaks a wall

We’re part of the StreamTeam for Netflix and were compensated or received product for this post. All thoughts are our own. Back in 1988’s Big starring Tom Hanks they had a prescient scene where his character, Josh, a 12 year old boy in a 30 year old man’s body had an idea. What if a comic book allowed you to select different directions within the story? Choose Your Adventure is the literary equivalent of that and now technology has caught up with the idea. Netflix has debuted an online streaming version of that with Puss In Boots: Trapped in an Epic Tale. This is a standalone episode, not included in one of the streaming seasons that are available on Netflix.
