5 simple ways to do something for National Wildlife Week #Spon

Prior to being a dad I was an eco guy.  I wrangled social media for an eco organization and wrote all manner of blog posts about sustainability and the environment.  Every month I contribute to the SC Johnson Green Choices blog.  This March 17-23 is National Wildlife Week, it’s the longest running educational program from the National Wildlife Foundation.

Curious Critters Volume 2 dazzles with crisp photos

As a child I went to our local nature center and now as a parent I take our two boys to our local several times a month.   To that point, if you’re ever in Greensboro, North Carolina the Greensboro Science Center is awesome and well worth your time.  Curious Critters Volume 2 takes a close up look at some of the critters that you’ll find featured at your local nature center in a way that’s educational and fun for children of all ages.  As a dad, and a photographer, I’m also drooling over the photography, which is vivid and has and depth of field that makes the details on the smallest creatures really stand out.

Thingy Things by Chris Raschka are offbeat fun that toddlers will love

My wife and I had the sing song discussion prior to having children.  That discussion was essentially that we would not ‘baby talk’ to our kids.  The Thingy Things book series by Chris Raschka may seem like a very basic, baby style book based on its cover.  However, as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.   These books are creative, goofy stories about animals-all the while using bigger vocabulary that your child can understand, but may not have seen in books yet.

LeapFrog Letter Factory : The Letter Machine Rescue Team giveaway

Our boys are raised on Leap, Tad and the other critters that make up the LeapFrog videos.  We started teaching phonics to our oldest and I partially credit their phonic usage in his being able to read sight word and fully know his A, B, Cs as well as he does.  Their latest video, Letter Factory: The Letter Machine Rescue Team gets the band back together, but also amps up the education while tweaking the format.

Ninja, Ninja, Never Stop! is a manic fun book for kids

Ninja, Ninja, Never Stop! immediately grabs your attention because of its bright, vivid colors, large letters and the fact that it has multiple ninjas on the cover. As the dad to 2 young boys; and a fan of martial arts movies this book would seem to speak directly  to me.  One read through the book  however and you- and your young audience will be hooked.

Whales, Giants of the Deep at Fernbank Museum is great fun for the family

We went to “Whales: Giants of the Deep” exhibit, because our 4-year-old son is so engaged with animals. I grew up in Atlanta, so I have childhood memories of Fernbank Museum, but experiencing it with my son gave me a whole new perspective.

Discover the Dinosaurs review: great times for kids for 2+ hours

Discover the Dinosaurs is a traveling exhibit that features dinosaur attractions of a wide variety.  The entire exhibition is broken up into two distinct areas. The exhibit area features the moving, roaring dinosaurs that will captivate your child’s imagination.  The other areas like the Dino Dig, Dino Theater, Dino Den, Dinosaur Rides, inflatables, gem & fossil panning, mini golf and gift shop make up the other half.  Our review of Discover the Dinosaurs says that it’s a great time for kids, but parents need to be aware of a couple things in order to really appreciate the event.

Closing schools due to cold weather is wrong in Atlanta-here’s why

I live in Atlanta.  Atlanta doesn’t get too cold, it’s one of those cities where the schools close when we get an inch of snow under the shade tree in the middle of a field and TV news is covering it.  During the recent Polar Vortex, like many other cities in the country school was cancelled.  What Atlanta shared with some cities is that school was cancelled simply due to the cold.   What about the children who don’t have winter coats was the rallying cry on social media supporting the decision.
