Our Christmas holiday giveaway for 2 $50 Fandango gift cards

This December we’ve given away a handful of stuff.  I can understand why some people wouldn’t like some of the items.  Tools-you don’t do DIY.  Music/electronics-to you music peaked when The Association broke up.  (I feel you on that BTW.)  However, this giveaway is truly one that every reader can embrace.  It’s for 2-$50 gift cards to the movies courtesy of Fandango.

True Detective Blu-ray DVD giveaway #Bpopevents

True Detective  was one of those shows that built up an audience because of its craft and presentation.  It was all the more remarkable that it did this in 8 episodes.  The atmospheric, dark drama put together a taut story with high point performances by the two leads, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.  If you didn’t see the show on HBO here’s a quick look at the trailer so you can see why you need to win this DVD.

A 5 year old muses about fire breathing dragons in Big Hero 6

We love our movies.  Because we have younger children it’s rarer for them to get to the theaters and actually see good movies.  Granted, they’ll go to the movie theater maybe a dozen times a year, but rare is the instance where we enjoy the movie as much as they do.  Big Hero 6 is the best movie that fits that category that we’ve seen this year.  Here’s a video reaction from our somewhat camera shy son about Big Hero 6.

By Grabthar’s Hammer, Galaxy Quest has aged well #StreamTeam

We’re part of the #StreamTeam for Netflix and were compensated for this post.  All thoughts are our own and this film really is awesome yo. With a happy grin when I checked out the ‘Recently Added’ movies on Netflix to see that Galaxy Quest was put up.  It’s been 14 years since I saw it last, remembered how much I loved it and wanted to see how it held up in the first decade of the new millennium.  Both of our children are too young to appreciate the film so I planted myself on the sofa and was relieved to find out that Galaxy Quest hasn’t aged too much.  If you haven’t seen Galaxy Quest here are 5 simple reasons why it’s one of the best comedies or science fiction movies on Netflix now.

Nocturna is a magical, animated sleeper for tweens and up

Nocturna is a Spanish language film that was released in 2007.  It garnered a following and they demanded that it be released in English.  Imagine if Guillermo del Torro made a children’s animated movie that had enough creative creepy creatures to slightly scary, but were charming once you got to know them?  That is what I kept thinking while watching Nocturna.  It’s such a sweet film that is so good at creating an alternate world within plain sight that you care about and are interested in the freaky animated characters.

Patema Inverted is original, mind bending anime for fans of the genre

The plot for Patema Inverted takes a moment to digest.  It’s the story of two teens who live on opposite gravities on the same planet.  Patema is a princess and lives underground in an industrial area while Age lives on the surface and is part of a totalitarian society.   So far, so good, right?  But here’s where it gets tricky.

A Letter to Momo, offbeat anime drama w/humor that works well

A Letter to Momo is an anime film that works on several levels, including the most elusive of all-getting non-anime fans to enjoy the film.  That’s no easy task considering that a focal point of the movie is the death of young girl’s dad very early in the film.   It’s from the creators of Ghost in the Shell and like that film is rich, detailed and provides a chamber of commerce look as aspects of Japan.

Welcome to the Space Show, big scale, grand visions, too long

Welcome to the Space Show is a Japanese anime science fiction film that is appropriate for all ages.   It’s anime, set against a science fiction story that has massive visions and almost gets there, almost.  Welcome to the Space Show has some of the most gorgeous animation that I’ve ever seen.  For a solid hour every scene has something fascinating, new and wondrous on it.   Even outside of that hour the film is visually stunning, but there are a couple elements that keep me from really recommending it.
