Part of the joy of being a parent is having fun with your children.  Dinosaur Train is the rare children’s television show that has wit, intelligence, humor, teachable moments and education in the same package.  The fact that Dinosaur Train is enjoyable for the parent as well makes it even more of a treat.  Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train Live:  Buddy’s Big Adventure is traveling the country and will be at Cobb Energy Center for two shows on February 22 at 1 and 4.

Big Apple Circus delivers in an intimate big top experience

Go big or go home? Not necessarily when you go to the Big Apple Circus. The Big Apple Circus is a more intimate version of Cirque de Soleil crossed with Barnum and Bailey Circus. I took my sons, ages 4 and 2, to see the circus with my 11 year-old niece who came to help. But between the clowns, the acrobats and the animals, they had us covered.

Megadeth taught me everything I need to know about children’s medicine

Small children are happy, uncontrollable running laboratories for things that adults can no longer get.  Think Jurassic Park on a microbial level and put those tiny ill tempered Pteranadons in your child.  One day our child had a rash around his mouth.  My wife said, “oh, I bet he has hand, foot and mouth disease”.  My immediate thought was hoof and mouth disease and then I remembered that Megadeth addressed this issue in their classic song Hook in Mouth.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey bring Built to Amaze! to Atlanta Feb., 5-17

I was provided with a family 4-pack of ticket in exchange for this posting.  All thoughts are our own.  Elephants are really cool, so are tigers, lions and bears. It was on the way out of the last Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey show that our 3 year old said, ‘can we go back to the circus tomorrow’?   Ah, children and their concept of time, it’s precious.  However, in real world time I knew it would be a year before they came back and we’ll see how interested he is then.

The Nut Job review: above average animal nuttiness kids will enjoy

The Nut Job is an animated movie about a squirrel that needs to steal some nuts so that he and his friends can eat for the winter.  There are some plot curve balls, but at its core, that’s what the movie is about.  It’s better than the preview, features the always likable Will Arnet and Liam Neeson among others, and is worth seeing for a couple of reasons.

The Adventures of Chuck & Friends: Trucks Versus Wild review

We cut cable in 2012.  Because of that there are dozens, if not hundreds of shows I had no idea that exist.  Witness Chuck & Friends, we have the toy and it’s awesome.  But wait they have a TV show too?  We were sent The Adventures of Chuck & Friends:  Trucks Versus Wild on DVD for a test drive and our kids loved it and I found it quite cute too.

Battroborg is great motion controlled robot boxing fun for ages 7 and up

Battroborg is a game that simply looks fun.  It has motion controlled robots and boxing-just add children aged 7 and up for hours of yelling, robot boxing fun.  Battroborg was named one on the Most Wanted Holiday List 2013 for Time To Play Mag, Best Action Toy of the Year in France and Belgium in addition to numerous other accolades.  But, does the toy deserve all of the praise?

Stocking stuffer ideas: Beginning Pearls by Stephan Pastis

Pearls Before Swine is one of only two comics in the daily paper that can make me laugh out loud.  It reminds me of the absurdity of The Far Side, has artwork similar to Dilbert and friend ships that are a more contemporary version of Peanuts. You’re probably heard of Pearls Before Swine, but if not, Beginning Pearls is an excellent jumping off point for this comic strip.
