The power of vacations and imperfect children #UniteMonday #ad

We partnered with Similac and were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own. Our vacation just ended. It was an awesome experience at the beach where our kids learned to swim, mom and dad had a chance to relax and everyone’s diet went south, especially the children’s. By diet, I mean the food that they eat. At every corner it seemed that there was an ice cream store. To that end it’s time for a group hug, (albeit just a big larger than when we left) and say that it’s OK to bend the parenting rules from time to time.

Melanoma 2 years on: having blood drawn and cracking your head open

It was a little over two years ago that I was diagnosed with Melanoma and went in for treatment. Since then I’ve shunned the sun, have gotten used to clothing with a high SPF, love my hats and saw our Oncologist once a quarter. This past week marked the last time that I needed to see him once a quarter. Now the visits go down to twice a year and then once a year for a couple of years and then, hopefully never again.

My Dinosaur is More Awesome, silly average dino fun

We love dinosaurs in this  house. We have over 100 dinosaur figures of various sizes, our oldest yearns to see Jurassic World and he can still sing the ABC Dinosaur Train song.  My Dinosaur is More Awesome is a silly dino book that most kids will like, but its presentation lacks that certain something that allows us (and our kids) to really enjoy the book.

Summer fun with the kids, exercise KIND snacks and #KINDMilesMatter #ad

I partnered with Life of Dad and KIND for this promotion. All thoughts are my own. Summertime and the exercise is easy, I might write a song that starts out something like that. Seriously though, summer is a fun time to get outside and exercise with the kids. The only difference with the children is that you don’t call it exercise, per se, it’s just called seeing a new town, going to the nature center or learning to ride a bike/swim.  It’s all about #KINDMilesMatter, jamming as much healthy fun as you can into the summer vacation. Here’s a sampling of what we did to burn some calories and how you can dig some KIND Snacks for something so tasty you won’t want to share it with the kids, but you should.

Tiny Hamster is a Giant Monster, silly all age reading fun

Based on a You Tube sensation. Not long ago that phrase and ‘movies that are produced by toy companies’ would’ve produced groans from me. However, it’s a brave new world and entertainment born on one platform can easily cross over to another. Proof of that is Tiny Hamster is a Giant Monster.

Young Hercules: The Complete Series, aged well for many reasons

Yes, it really has been 17 years since Young Hercules was on television. It aired on the Fox Kid’s Network from 1998 to 1999, starred a young Ryan Gossling and was Executive Produced by Sam Raimi and Robert G. Tapert and was nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards.  The entire series is out on DVD now and it has aged great, the humor is intact and its packed with action that is accessible to children aged 5 and up.

Is Jurassic World OK for children? #FandangoFamily

Imagine for a moment that Jurassic Park had never been made and the cultural impact that it created did not exist. If that were the case then Jurassic World and its plot would air just after Sharknado. Two lost teens (whose parents are getting divorced!), mutant dinosaurs, a dino trainer, kids in danger, hungry animals and more make up Jurassic World. It’s rated PG-13 and some movies with this rating are A-OK for tweens and young teens, but is Jurassic World OK for children?

Fifty cents, the Gup-G and shoveling dog poop

We asked our oldest if he wanted to earn some money taking care of a friend’s animals while they were away. It would involve shoveling out the dog poop form their walk-in outdoor kennel and putting the cat inside every night. He jumped like a rabbit and couldn’t wait to get started. For a month  he’s wanted a Spider-Man night light and we explained to him that with this money he could get that and still have $30 leftover.
