Explore and play: vacationing with wiggle room

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Let’s Play, but all opinions are my own.

As a Let’s Play Ambassador I like to play. Having said that, I’ve always liked to play and have a very curious spirit. When I was single and travelling I enjoyed getting lost and have always liked being out of my element. Our family travel or vacations do not have the same vibe, but I still manage to discover side trips or activities that are not the main reason for why we’re going there.

Duck, Duck, Porcupine! is a kid’s first graphic novel

Duck, Duck, Porcupine! is a children’s book that will register with kids 2-6 years old and their parents for different reason. It’s the simple tale of three friends, a duck, duck and a porcupine. They go about having fun, going to birthday parties, camping and learning how to accept each other’s differences. Each critter has its own distinct personality that is clearly conveyed through the bright, happy artwork by Salina Yoon.

5 Simple Ideas to Kick Start Your Spring Play

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Let’s Play, but all opinions are my own.

Excitement in the air as Daddy Mojo is a Let’s Play Ambassador for Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play initiative. With two kids who need to get out and  play, a very good understanding of where our local parks are and a curiosity to discover new places to play, we’re all pumped. Let’s Play is an initiative by Dr Pepper Snapple Group that provides kids and families with the tools, places and inspiration to make active play a daily priority. Through Let’s Play, Dr Pepper Snapple Group partners with two non-profit organizations – KaBOOM! to build and improve playgrounds and Good Sports to provide grants for sports equipment – to help make active play possible.

Playing is a very important tool in how kids learn. It helps build teamwork and assists in those lessons that books just can’t teach. Plus, it helps young students get the exercise that they need, considering that only a third of kids take gym daily.

May! Let’s face it, May is everybody’s favorite month of the year. It’s not that the other months are bad; it’s just that May is perfect, and it’s a great month to get active. The kids can play longer due to more daylight, and are frustrated when they have to go to bed before the sun sets. All of this means that the kids can enjoy new things in the spring and summer. Think about it, the last time it was this warm in some of their young lives they couldn’t do some of the things that they wanted to do.

Baseball History for Kids: approachable and fun for 9 and up

There is just something about baseball and kids. Baseball History for Kids: America at Bat from 1900 to today by Richard Panchk is aimed at that sweet spot of children being passionate about something, able to read and wanting to learn.  This book is a love letter to the game of baseball, its history, the players and the fans. It also doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to addressing the dark periods in the game and history, like segregation, work strikes or other things.

Parent Hacks, the online parent cheat sheet is now a go-to book

Parent Hacks is a genius website that parents probably don’t use enough. I say that from experience because I don’t use it, despite the fact that most of their tips are super helpful. Using ‘hack’ as a suffix is common now and has watered down how effective some of the hacks can actually be. Because of that, some folks may think of a ‘hack’ as half measured or low brow approach to fixing something.

Little Shaq Takes a Chance, and misses

I saw Shaquille O’Neal’s social media manager speak once. Even prior to that, Shaq was someone who I respected and admired from many perspectives. His philanthropic work with The Boys and Girls Club and the way that he handled his professional career is one that athletes should aspire to. Her speech about working for him only solidified my opinion of him. That’s why it’s such a let down that his second children’s book, Little Shaq Takes a Chance doesn’t measure up to what it could be.

Paint By Sticker KIDS, great, go-to crafting for kids 5 and up

Our 4 year old is our crafty kid. Our 6 year old is our puzzle kid. Obviously, their roles are not set in stone, but by in large, that is what they prefer. As a parent, that’s why it was surprising to me that our oldest gravitated towards Paint By Sticker KIDS, a combination craft book that uses a little precision. This is a new book by Workman Publishing that lets kids create their own works of art using stickers.

The Fintastic Fishsitter-a young reader’s guide to Zombie Goldfish

Our 6 year old likes reading My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish. More accurately, he likes having it read to him-and then spending some time alone with the book so that he can read it at his own pace. The concept of a zombie goldfish who can hypnotize anything with his eyes, a vampire kitten named Fang, two young boys and their respective tween brothers is the stuff of young reader dreams. The Fintastic Fishsitter is the tale of Sami, Pradeep’s little sister who is helping him and Tom by fishsitting Frankie, the zombie goldfish. This is also more of a picture book, with very few words, full color illustrations and the same evil kitten, villainous brother, madcap story that is designed for kids that have not yet graduated to reading on their own or chapter books.
