Happy new comic book day, if you’ll be at the store just hashtag it #NCBD to share what you’re reading. The new all age comic books this week have some great new entries for young readers of any interest. If you like to start out a mini-series at the first issue then jump on board with Atomic Robo and the Temple of Od. This is a great, creative, stable of characters in a story that’ll be enjoyable for ages 10 and up.

Also in science fiction and action there are a couple Doctor Who comic books, Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Magazine Special-it’s a great week to be a Whovian. These comics are OK for all ages, but will have lots of reading. Ages 10 and up will also want to check out Godzilla Rage Across Time, it tracks Godzilla through time and how those in different epochs dealt with him. All age comic books for the fable/fantasy folks include Usagi Yojimbo, Over the Garden Wall and Munchkin. Any of those comics will be great for ages 8 and up, it just depends on their reading style.

Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man Vs. Bera The One-Headed Troll, Nordic, all age fun-with heart

There is a little Bera inside all of us.  Bera The One-Headed Troll is a graphic novel by Eric Orchard and published on First Second. Bera is a troll, to be clear, she’s a one-headed troll, because some trolls-including the internet kind, have two or more heads.  She’s a gentle soul who is much different than the other inhabitants of The Troll King’s kingdom. And, she’s found a baby, something that certainly flies in the face of accessories that other troll’s have, unless they’re using them as a spice for cooking.

All Age Comic Books for August 17, 2016, #NCBD

Every Wednesday is new comic book day when dozens upon dozens of comics hit the stores. In that lot there are at least two dozen all age comic books that are great for any age reader. This week we’re highlighting some really cool ones including a great graphic novel from DC Comics, Looney Tunes Greatest Hits Vol. 1, What’s Up Doc?  This collects some classic stories from this long running comic book that’s been published since 1994.

Kong of Skull Island is great for ages 10 and up, Lumberjanes, Duck Avenger, Teen Titans GO!, Sonic and more, this week in new all age comic books.

In other all age comic books that young readers will want to read (and are OK with parents), check out Duck Avenger, a new series from IDW, Powerpuff Girls, My Little Pony or Strawberry Shortcake. #2 of Mickey Mouse Shorts Season 1 is out too. This is a fun mini-series that offers a re-imagining of Mickey and other characters that pictures them in an art deco way reminiscent of 60’s advertisements.

Your all age super books include the go-to title Teen Titans GO! and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #61. The Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover from DC Comics and IDW is out and a very fun graphic novel for readers 10 and up.

That age group will also like Kong of Skull Island, that’s a new mini-series from Boom! Studios. The art in this comic book is realistic and has some flashes of violence and action that might be too much for kids younger than that. Tween readers will love the updated story and it serves as a great primer for the movie next year.  Also in action/science fiction is the latest from Lumberjanes, Sonic the Hedgehog, Back to the Future and a neat graphic novel called Bird Boy that’s got enough nature and action to entertain anyone.

Star Wars Original Topps Trading Card Series HC Volume 3, Return of the Jedi is out. These books reprint the original trading cards from the first trilogy. The first two books in this series by Topps were great fun and made us curse our 9 year old self for not keeping them.

Simpsons Illustrated #24 from Bongo Comics review

“I want to read the Bongo”, he said. Our oldest son has no idea who The Simpsons are. He just knows that he likes reading any of the Simpson’s titles that Bongo Comics publishes. I’ve tried numerous times explaining to him that Bongo Comics is the publisher and that the actual name of the book is different. We purchased Simpsons Illustrated #24 from our local comic book store and he immediately said that he wanted to read it,-which led our younger son screaming the same thing and go running to where we got our copy. A child screaming is bad enough, but to the employees at a comic book store it’s   kryptonite to Superman. We quickly paid for our comic, went to the car and had another discussion about inside voice, as well as the Bongo Comics vs. Simpsons Illustrated overview.

Looney Tunes #232, classic characters, great all age comic

Looney Tunes from DC Comics is a template of what a great all age comic should be. Take out the aspect that it’s a classic character and the series still succeeds based on variety of stories, their length, style of humor and pricing. When you add in the fact the Looney Tunes continues the comic book adventures of Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and others it cements the fact that this is one of the go-to comic books that you need to consider for your young reader.

All age comic books for August 10

Did you check out the podcast? Look just above these lines, we’ll wait here….that’s the podcast that highlights the top 9 all age comic books this week. If you have any input, things you liked or comics we should feature please let us know. Now, let’s laugh. There are some funny all age comics out this week including a $1 My Little Pony, Adventure Time, Invader Zim and the classic Popeye.

Flintstones #2 is out too, but its description doesn’t look funny. Have you read this comic book yet? If so please let us know your thoughts. Otherwise this a semi-realistic tale about stone age nostalgia doesn’t sound like something the kids want to read.

This week in all age comic books has lots of Doctor Who, a great Labyrinth celebration, Lumberjanes, Popeye, My Little Pony, Spidey and more.

Superheroes have The Lone Ranger/Green Hornet for old soul young readers, Spidey trade paperback that collects issues 1-6 and The Rocketeer at War.

There is a Doctor Who book for every preference this week and ours is Doctor Who Supremacy of the Cybermen. This collects lots of doctors who are doing their best to prevent a Cybermen new war and assist in an ancient alien war. The show might be too much for young kids, but the Doctor Who comic from Titan is age appropriate for all age comic books.  Young readers will love the action and science fiction and their only difficulty will be in fully understanding the vocabulary.

Jim Henson Labyrinth 30th Anniversary Special collects previously uncollected stories from Free Comic Book Day and lots of other tales too.  Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #3 is also a great crossover mini-series that young readers 9 and up will like. It’s got the wit, charm and weirdness of Lumberjanes and throws in the slightly more realistic fun of Gotham Academy.

Ghoul Scouts, Night of the Unliving Undead #3 review

It’s tough to be a kid who is into the undead. Even our 4 year old knows about zombies, despite the fact that he has never seen anything close to them on television. The closest he’s probably gotten is Scooby Doo where a ‘zombie’ attacks the gang but is promptly outed as an angry tenant wearing a mask. Ghoul Scouts, Night of the Unlving Undead is a clever comic for young readers that helps satisfy their zombie curiosity while providing some lessons to live by too.

Invader Zim is becoming one of our go-to all age comics, here’s why

There are a couple instances where I miss not having cable. One of those is for the sporting events and the other is for missing out on some of the children’s shows. Invader Zim is on Nickelodeon and issue #11 of the self titled comic is out now. We’ve read the past four issues of this series and it’s quickly becoming one of our go-to, can’t miss all age comic books.
