Best all age comics for December 14

There are only two more new comic book days before Christmas, so if you plan on getting a young reader or yourself something for that long weekend stock up now. The best all age comics this week run the gamut to cool graphic novels to a couple of the go-to comics that you can never go wrong with.

Let’s start off with two action/science-fiction graphic novels. Kids 6 and up will like Dragons Defenders of Berk, it’s an original graphic novel about Toothless, Dragon Training Academy and Vikings. If your kids have seen either of the films they’ll love this. The other action graphic novel is Bruce Lee: The Dragon Rises and it collects issues 1-4 of this outstanding comic book. Kids 8 and up will like this, mainly due to the reading required to really enjoy the comic. Bruce Lee is one of the best all age comics this year that blends classic action, science fiction and humor in a package that anybody can enjoy.

Two funny graphic novels that’ll hit their sweet spot is Adventure Time: Ice King and Simpsons Comics Knockout. Both of these books are laugh out loud funny, have distinctive art and are more palatable for younger audiences in print, than their television counterpart.

In humor comic books check out Mickey & Donald Christmas Parade #2, Spongebob Comics #63, as well as, My Little Pony: Friends Forever #35 and others to tickle the yuletide funny bone.

Fans of all age comic books who dig super heroes will be drawn to the heroes in a half shell, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures Vol 2. A new comic book that brings together two great characters for a mini-series is Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. #2 of #6 is out this week and this series is outstanding. It brings real action and mood to a genre that normally paints its superheroes as cartoonish or too young for most 7 year olds.

Invader Zim, Mega Princess, Scooby Doo Where Are You? and Sonic Universe are also out this week.

Best all age comics for November 30

This week represents something special for the best all age comics to come out on new comic book day. Comic book 101: each Wednesday is New Comic Book Day, it’s when all of the new comics for the week hit stores. Two great all age comics, The Pink Panther and Monty the Dinosaur have their trade paperback release. Our 7 year old loves The Pink Panther, each issue has two new stories and two classic stories that were originally published in the 60’s or 70’s. This trade paperback collects issues 1-3, the Halloween special and the Free Comic Book Day book that previewed the coming Pink madness.

For our money one of the best new all age comic books of the year is Monty the Dinosaur. It’s the story of a dinosaur who has befriended a little girl. She lives and plays with him, all the while he’s trying to fit into modern life. The art is great, the stories are simple and effective and this is a comic that will bring back memories of Calvin and Hobbes.

In other humor all age comics you can find lots of Walt Disney characters like Frozen, Uncle Scrooge, Mickey’s Inferno and Disney Darkwing Duck.

Two staple titles that are regularly some of the best all age comics you can pick up are Simpsons Comics and Invader Zim. Each of those titles are great for any age and we haven’t picked up a bad issue of either of them.

One superhero series that is really good is Voltron Legendary Defender. The final issue in this mini-series is out this week and it’s only $2.99, plus it’s a smart comic book that will really speak to young readers who like teamwork, logic and action with their 100’ robots.

Three teen titles that might fly under your radar are Godzilla Rage Across Time and Ghostbusters International. Godzilla collects the five comics that were in this most recent mini-series. Ghostbusters International is normally fabulous for ages 8 and up, however, this issue might have some language (that you can see on the front cover) that parents don’t want their kids to say. We also like Sensational She-Hulk. This trade paperback collect lots of her issues and is jammed with the action, art and sly humor that fans loved about this series

We’re excited to take a look at Spookhouse. Spookhouse #2 from Eric Powell comes out and tells camp-fire style spooky stories for kids. Powell’s latest, Chimichanga: Sorrow of the World’s Worst Face is a great all ages tale and that brings high hopes for Spookhouse.

Thanksgiving week still has lots to be thankful for in the comic book world. Young readers have their pick of some of the best all age comics this week including some that are perfect for young girl readers, lots of humor and even a good variety in superheroes.

Superpowers is a new mini-series from DC Comics by Art Baltazar and Franco, whose iconic work fans will recognize from Tiny Titans, Superman Family Adventures and Action Cat and Adventure Bug. Their new comic book is about Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, the big three in the DCU. This will be all age comic greatness for those young readers that have been screaming for a monthly superhero book with DC heroes.

There are two girl go-to staples this week, Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony. Either of these will be great for readers 5 and up who will want to look at the pictures and recognize the letters. The young kids will need help reading most of the words, but this is prime territory for certain folks.

Some solid humor titles this week include Futurama Comics, Lumberjanes, Regular Show trade paperback 07, Scooby Doo Team Up (with Space Ghost) and a couple others.

The two teen titles this week are Godzilla Rage Across Time and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Both of these are great for those 12 and older.

Voltron, Legendary Defender, #4 review

Voltron Legendary Defender is a five-issue mini-series from Lion Forge Comics that takes place immediately after episode 108, Rebirth, from the latest Voltron series that’s airing on Netflix. The content in the comic book is great for ages 9 and up because it teaches teamwork and friendship, but also has action and space travel to keep kids interested.

The middle of November, relatives are coming into town or you are going on the road. What are the best all age comics that you need to make the road trip more tolerable? It could be a comic book or two at your otherwise comic-free house to entertain small people. There are some classic ones like Simpsons Comics and Sonic hitting stores, both of which are always dependable.

First off let’s start with the teens. There are two cool comic books that might fly under their radar. If you have a 13 year old boy or older and you want them to feel at home pick up either one of these two. He Man Thundercats #2 brings the two 80’s franchises together in a mash up that parents-in-the know will dig and teens who like middle Earth style action will also. The trailer for Kong: Skull Island is everything I hoped it would be. The comic book Kong of Skull Island has some incredibly impressive monster art, smashing, jungle scenes that are great for those same ages.

For the true all age comics there are seemingly sets of everything. There are two Archies. Archie #14 from Archie Comics is the more contemporary, updated version and Archie Comic Super Special #7 is the thicker, ‘classic’ Archie.

There are three Doctor Who comics, not including the final issue of Supremacy of the Cybermen min-series.

Scooby got a reboot, did you hear? Yeah, Scooby Apocalypse is the zombie Scooby that’s good for teen readers. Their most recent issue came out last week. This week sees Scooby Doo Where Are You #75 and Daphne has to get all warrior princess on some ghosts in order to help the team. This is a classic and every issue can be included as one of the best all age comics when you see it.

Our 5 year old may not know it, but he’s super excited about Donald Quest, a five issue mini-series starring steampunk Donald and his partner Mickey. Can our 5 year old read? No. But he loves looking at Donald Duck and this one is right up his alley. If Donald isn’t your scene there is also a new Uncle Scrooge, Mickey Mouse and Darkwing Duck available. The music in the podcast is from Halloween.

Space Battle Lunchtime #6 is brilliant simplicity for 7 and up

Space Battle Lunchtime is the best (almost) all age comic that you’re not reading. Its title is ridiculously cool-all that’s missing are bacon, robots or ninjas to utterly claim the title for best comic title ever. The premise is simple; Peony is a baker from Earth who is competing in a mashup cooking/gladiator competition on another planet.

Best all age comics for November 9, Spongebob Comics and more

What are some good comics for my kid to read? We get asked that a lot and we do have some go-to best all age comics that are great for boys or girls. One of those titles is Spongebob Comics. Each issue has a couple of different stories, is packed with creative art, funny dialogue and does so without the rudeness that might put some parents off. It’s a great title for ages 6 and up, plus the comic book doesn’t have stories that continue to another issue. Readers can rest assured that you won’t be tricked into reading the second part of a lame story, but you shouldn’t because each issue of Spongebob Comics is flat out funny.

A mini-series that brings together two of our favorite titles is out this week. Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1 (of 6) puts the all ages titles for these two mega heroes in one book. This is great for any age, the violence will be the same as the Nickelodeon show (not bad at all) and it’ll give young kids a ‘real’ super team up.

In humor comics this week kids 8 and up who love oddities and laugh just a bit outside the box will love Chimichanga. It’s the story of a freak show bearded girl who befriends a skinny creature who has the world’s worst face. Don’t be fooled by its surroundings, this is a fun title that’s just enough on the outside to let kids be cool and rebel, but with a fabulous comic you’ll want to read too.

Some of the other best all age comics this week are the staples, like Donald Duck, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Back to the Future, Marvel Universe Guardians of the Galaxy and others.

We also mention some of the kidlit releases here and this week sees the 500 pound gorilla of kidlit, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down hit stores. Mention this series to an upper elementary or middle school student and their eyes light up. Our 7 year old neighbor saw our copy of the book arrive and I nearly had to tackle her for it. This is the book that your kids will want to read this fall.

If you have a teen reader check out WWE Then Now Forever and Godzilla: Rage Across Time. Both of these series have action and situations that are too much for elementary age kids, but will fit the bill for upper middle school and up.

New all age comics for November 2, #ComicBooks

Even though Halloween is over you can still enter The Greatest Halloween Costume Contest Ever! Just take a photo of you, or your young reader with a copy of one of the Halloween Comic Fest Mini-Comic. Upload it to their site and cross your fingers. There are five categories with two winners in each, one kid and one adult. Entries will be accepted until November Monday, November 7 at 11:59 PM. Now this week in new all age comics brings one of the best in a very long time for the girls.

If you have a girl young reader there are sine new all age comics that they’ll want to read. For example, Care Bears Rainbow River Rescue is a new graphic novel that is great for any age. The trade paperback for Beauty and the Beast is out from Joe Books. Supplies on that one are limited so order in advance or grab it if you see it in the stores. It’s only $7.99 too, so it’s quite the deal.

There are still more comics that are just for the girls. Disney Frozen #2, also from Joe Books hits stores and is only $2.99. Mega Princess #1, Miraculous, My Little Pony trade paperback Vol 1, Unicorn vs. Goblins graphic novel and DC Super Heroes Big Book of Girl Power is out. A new graphic novel, DC Super Hero Girls trade paperback Vol . Hits and Myth is only $9.99 and has an all new story. Boys will be OK with this one, but it’s certainly going to appeal to girls more.

Sonic Mega Man Worlds Unite trade paperback Vol 2, Broken Bonds is a great book for elementary school kids. It’s packed with action, but does have vocabulary that might be a little challenging for first through third graders. There are also some cool Doctor Who comics, a pop-up book for younger Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fans, Spidey, DC Super Heroes Big Book of Superpowers and some other cool titles for kids too.
