Space Racers is equal part education and entertainment #Giveaway #SRPopup

Is Space Racers a television show that aims to educate or entertain? As parents we know that it’s trying to do both, but we can usually detect when it’s about to happen. The effective trick about Space Racers is that the education sneaks up on you. You’re enjoying the pleasant enough episode when all of a sudden someone is off to see what’s making the moon disappear. It’s just the shadow, we know that, but the way that it’s explained will keep kids entertained.

In hindsight you can see the entertainment and education line very clearly. But in real time it blends until suddenly you realize that it’s still fun, but you’re hearing about things that you’ve forgotten and sound like science. And more importantly, the kids in the room are hearing it for the first time and enjoying it.

Visually the show’s animation is very good and higher than you’re used to on television. Part of that is the stark colors that the show has with the group going into space so often. The black of space against the colorful planes really plays nicely. However, even when the planes are on Earth the show makes great use of focus and depth.

Space Racers is geared for children 3-6 and each episode features Eagle, Hawk, Robyn, Starling or Raven up to something at Stardust Bay Space Academy. They’re cadets there and in each episode they learn something about space, science, exploration or experimentation. Don’t let that sentence dissuade you from watching, it’s a good show that kids will enjoy.

The Space Rangers Parent & Educator Toolkit features 13 episodes from the show, 4-live action segments and a CD-ROM with lesson plans and family activities based on the show. It was produced with insight from NASA and has lots of activities to stimulate early STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), you know, the fields where all the jobs are? This is what kids need to learn and the sooner the better.  Bonus: through Sunday, August 23, 2015 save 20% on all Space Racers merchandise. Just use the code SRpopup3 when you check out.
