Fast & Furious 6…cars, racing, action, repeat-set up for #7

Fast and Furious is the brother from another mother of The Expendables.    In a number of years we’ll be saying ‘really, there are 5 Expendable movies now’?    By then Fast and Furious will be on their 10th movie, will make hundreds of millions of dollars and be a guilty movie experience that people will semi enjoy.

No matter how hard you want a cat to be a dog they will never be one.  You can take that cat to dog training classes, feed them dog treats, but it will never happen.   The same can be said for people who go to Fast & Furious 6 and expect to see something different, classier, more intelligent or less cheesy than its predecessors.

Fast & Furious 5 was a change for the better in the series because it amped up the action and added Dwayne Johnson.  Fast & Furious 6 takes that lesson, switches up the location, adds Gina Carano, keeps the rest of the cast and tosses gravity out of the window.

What’s good about Fast & Furious 6

The first half of the film has some nice race sequences and uses very little CGI.  There are also a couple moments of humor, which, while not good-are at least not bad.

Dwayne Johnson is cocky, has snappy lines and fits the part perfectly.  Gina Carano is a welcome addition too; it’s great to see a woman who can really kick butt.  Luke Evans plays Shaw the main villain in the movie, bad, approachable and dapper, just the way a good villain should be.

What’s bad about Fast & Furious 6

It was too long and could definitely be cut by 20 minutes.  There were a couple periods of emotion or dialogue that should’ve been eliminated or at least trimmed down.

The second half of the movie makes up for the lack of CGI and not in a good way.  The two major set pieces in the second half are CGI heavy, too long and defy gravity, as well as physics.  They border on silly and that’s saying a lot for this movie.

Having said that, I liked Fast & Furious 6, I went in expecting action, a semi predictable plot and the car equivalent of The Expendables.  And that is exactly what I got.  The Fast & Furious movies won’t win any new converts at this point (unless they add Jason Statham…..!), but if you’re a fan of the series you’ll like it.  Plus, they’ve already announced Fast & Furious 7, which will be released in the summer of 2014.
