Superman: Last Son of Krypton

A look at the DC comics available at Free Comic Book Day

It should come as no surprise that the two superheroes on the cover for DC Comics free comics are Superman and Batman.  These two free comics are a good cross section because they highlight one for younger readers and one for teens (and up).

The DC Nation Super Sampler is a sneak preview of two series from the DC Kids line.  For the first half o the book Beware the Batman goes on a kid friendly, but action packed journey against some baddies in Gotham City.  In the second half we meet Teen Titans Go!, a group of early teens, who are also superheroes.  Robin, Beast Boy, Starfire, Raven and Cyborg make up the Teen Titans.

The art in the two series is very different, with Beware the Batman being darker and more vivid, but still kid friendly.  Teen Titans Go! is drawn in a manga style, with big eyes, soft edges and large panels.  It’s also a funnier title and is great for kids of any age.  Beware the Batman is a nice kids title for those 7 and up.   Both of these titles have a cartoon coming to Cartoon Network’s Saturday morning DC Nation programming block.

Superman: Last Son of Krypton #1 is a lead up to the June 14 launch of Superman Unchained, a new monthly series created by Scot Snyder and Jim Lee. It’s the first chapter of the best selling graphic novel, Superman: Last Son of Krypton.  This features a grand battle with General Zod and the Phantom Zone villains.

The age on this comic says Teen, but ages 10 and up can really enjoy this book too.  There isn’t anything that’s graphic or dark about it.  There are some explosions, Superman gets really angry, but that’s the only thing that parents need to keep an eye on.  The story is fresh and the art has an organic feel to it, very detailed and 100% Superman.

These two books are definitely ones that you want to pick up as part of Free Comic Book Day on May 4.

Big thanks to DC Nation for sending me their two comics that will be available for Free Comic Book Day.  All thoughts are my own.
