Star Wars Lost Tribe of the Sith

Dad reads Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith: Spiral

It took me a while to warm up to the Star Wars comics, but I’m enjoying them now.  Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith-Spiral takes places when The Old Republic is peacefully governing the galaxy.  The only trouble that can be found are the battles between the Jedi of old and the Sith.

Spiral takes place on Kesh, a primitive planet that had a ship full of Sith crash land two thousand years ago.  Note:  don’t try saying a ship full of Sith three times fast around your children or your mom.  The Tribe, as they came to be known, act as gods around the locals whose planet they crashed on.

Just like humans, some Sith can’t be trusted and The Tribe has developed fringes of good, evil and various classes. Spinner is the town’s criminal with a possible heart of gold.  Takara is a Sith Officer, heroine, daughter of the Grand Lord and all round feminine ass kicker.

Through a series of unfortunate events Spinner and Takara find themselves in an Arctic environment where they’re saved from a group of pirates by The Doomed.  The Doomed are a motley crew of a wookies and odd looking aliens that live on the other side of the Kesh.  You’ll recognize all of The Doomed through one Star Wars movie.

The one character who I’d never seen before is Kaliska, who looks like Skin from Skunk Anansie, except with large bat wings on her back. Kaliska turns out to be a very cool character who befriends Takara and tells her all about the old days of Kesh; including the mystery coffin that holds a Sith super weapon.

Spinner escapes with the mystery coffin just in time for Kaliska and Takara to catch him opening it.  Boom.  In the coffin is a Sith super villain, Lord Dreypa who is intent on conquering worlds.  Dreypa gets all evil dark Lord on them, lays waste to villages and Spinner becomes his Smee (from Peter Pan).

The Tribe takes up arms against them in a mountainous area where Dreypa summons the Leviathans, these 200 foot tall worms with arms and legs.  The Leviathans commence their wrath and threaten to destroy the world and only Talkara can save them, but it’s a secret that she swore never to tell.

This is a good graphic novel because it moves quickly and has a detailed, but not too detailed story.  The action is creative, the monsters are big and there are wookies too.  It doesn’t have the same fault of some Star Wars books as being too involved with politics or history.  Because it’s near the beginning of the Star Wars history they can get straight to the action, where it stays for most of the book.

PS. Star Wars Day is May 4.  Star Wars Lost Tribe of the Sith is available on July 5, 2013. Re received a copy of the graphic novel via NetGalley for review purposes. May the Force be with you.
