Balls of Steel- great mission, but the product left us cold

Balls of Steel, wasn’t that the so-so movie about professional dodge ball?   Oh, it was that song from Accept in the late 80’s, yes?  Not really, this time Balls of Steel is a hybrid of sorts between philanthropy, testicular cancer and a drink cooler.

The product is simple, it’s a pair of high quality stainless steel balls that (once cooled) you put into a mixed drink.  Swill the drink around, remove the balls and your drink should be colder than ice-without having the melted ice from watering down your drink.

One of the founders of Balls of Steel had a scare with cancer.  As a result of that they wanted to create a community where people could discuss the life changes that might be coming.  A place where survivors could share stories, resources and plan for a path towards a cure.

Balls of Steel, BOS

15% of the net profits from Balls of Steel go toward testicular cancer research.

The philanthropic aspects of Balls of Steel are great.  The way that they want to create community and conversation around testicular cancer is amazing.

Having said that, the Balls of steel did not keep our drink cool.  The directions say to leave them in the freezer for 90 minutes, I forgot about them and left them in there for a couple of days.  The balls were plenty cold enough.

I swilled them around my mixed drink and it cooled it a bit, but not to where it was cold or enjoyable.  The instructions are clear to say “Don’t drop them in your glass”, but the balls are made of steel and will break a glass with ease. The instructions also say “Remove them prior to drinking”, which is a good thing.

If the balls had super cooled my drink it would’ve been OK, but they barely made the drink cold.

Love the mission and cause, but if you’re going to buy these just to support testicular cancer you’d be better off making the donation directly.  I’d also skip buying these if you’re looking for a super cold manner to chill your drinks.  If on the other hand you’re looking for a conversation starter at a party, these will do the trick.

We were provided with a copy of Balls of Steel for review purposes.
