Book review: Even Aliens Need Snacks by Matthew McElligott

Even Aliens Need Snacks is the story about a young boy who likes to cook.  He helps his mother in the kitchen and creates his own recipes until his sister makes fun of him by saying that nobody would eat his recipes.  The brother then sets out to prove his sister wrong (as any brother would do) by setting up snack stand in his front yard.

After a day no customers come to his stand and he goes to bed only to woken up aliens who are looking for food.  The aliens proceed to drink some mushroom iced tea-which they love, and then tell all their alien friends about this great place to eat.  His snack shack starts to get busy and the customers start to come in from all over the place, until the end of summer when he makes a special dish….

Even Aliens Need Snacks by Matthew McElligott

Even Aliens Need Snacks is a wonderful book that’s just a little strange that parents will love to read and children will enjoy for many reasons..   The illustrations are big, clever and fill up each page.  It’s a simple story made great by the way that the illustrations push the story along.

The words and pictures match each other very well so even if you have a child that can’t read at all they’ll enjoy the pictures.  If your little person is reading some words they can read them while you read most of it.  Whichever way you kids are this book is really enjoyable, super cute and one that will be in your heavy rotation for quite a while.

Certainly the cooking angle figured into the book, but Toddler Mojo doesn’t enjoy it for that.  He likes the relatively simple sentences, big drawings and funny figures.  Another reason Even Aliens Need Snacks is a great book to read to children is that each page has very few sentences.  The busiest page in the book has three sentences.  Personally, that’s a great characteristic for a children’s book because that allows you to explain the story, ask questions about what’s going on or just read slower and enjoy the time with your children.

Bottom Line

Even Aliens Need Snacks is great.  It’s one of our favorite books to read to the kids and we’re confident that it will be around for a long time.

We were provided with a copy of the book for review.  Aliens did not inhabit our body for the review nor feed us bad food to make us think crazy things.
