Mother’s Day is nigh. You can surely tell that fact because the greeting card aisle is more motherly than usual and books aimed at maternal units are everywhere. How to Spot a Mom is a gentle, tongue-in-cheek, humor book that one could easily enjoy for a couple of pages. If moms put books in their mom’s only bathroom (which clearly doesn’t exist) or their mom’s only coffee table, then How to Spot a Mom would be common fodder on those tables.
Note: as someone who has lived with a mom, a lovely woman who I call my wife, I can absolutely state that the latter point will not happen. If there’s a book on your coffee table then it’s a large, photography book of some national forest or art book from a painter that she wishes she had time to enjoy again. More often than not, said coffee table is always a struggle to maintain with nothing on it. However, let’s get back to our point on How to Spot a Mom.
The chatty mom, the coach, the cheerleader, the outdoorsy mom, the homebody, and many more personality types of moms are in the book. The illustrations in the book are from Aura Lewis and have that simple, yet slightly retro style that’s very popular and effective. The text by Donna Amey Bhatt is comforting and on par for ages nine and up to be able to read by themselves.
While the younger set is able to read the book, How to Spot a Mom is better suited for those women who are about to give birth or have just recently given birth. It’s a humor book that’s meant for moms, but the stereotypes that are portrayed in the book are also spot-on accurate.
All of the mom types have a small paragraph written about them with characteristics that are written on them. The humor is based in reality, with just a very subtle hint of sarcasm. Most of the mom categories also have a brief rundown of their natural habitat, likes, dislikes, and tips on spotting them. Anyone who has spent time on any social media site that has groups will immediately be able to relate to the book’s descriptions and most likely agree with them 100%.
Moms will immediately get this book. They’ll chuckle, laugh under their breath at the mom down the street who is the alpha whatever mom at the top of their stereotypical game. They’ll laugh, just the way that dads would laugh at How to Spot a Dad, which will inevitably come out with the same points. As a light-hearted thank you for mom on Mother’s Day or a conversation starter to new moms How To Spot A Mom is a gentle, fun, and honest look at what they’ll most likely become. Granted they could certainly be a mix of the moms in the book, but a slice of mom’s DNA and characteristics is firmly represented in this book.
