Dad spends a night in the mancave: Hanna

Sometimes I don’t need to watch a movie.  Some previews are so enjoyable and give away major plot points that you don’t need to bother with the time or money to watch the actual movie.    Hanna had a really good trailer and now that it’s available on demand we broke down and rented it.

It is a good trailer isn’t it?    The trailer tells you that Hanna is Jason Bourne in a 14 year old girl’s body and that she wants to kill the woman with red hair.  You’re curious as to how she went from the icy climate to the desert wearing an orange prison suit and just who is that strange looking German guy with the comb-over  at 1:17?

Hanna was raised in the woods of Finland with her secret agent father, Erik, played by Eric Bana.  Normally any movie with a character that has the same name as the actor that’s playing them gets a thumb down.  In this case though, Bana is almost unrecognizable due to his beard and beaver pelts.

They’re hiding in the forest until Hanna is ready.  Erik turns on the tracking suitcase from the tundra, shaves his beard, loses the beaver pelts and leaves Hanna in the woods.  The military descend on the hut in the forest; Hanna opens up a can of whoop ass and ends up in the concrete prison.

The great thing about Hanna is that the movie never tells you where it’s going, it just goes.  Don’t ask any questions about the sub plot about Hanna being some genetic experiment to build a super race.  There are a couple holes in the plot, but just roll it and you’ll have a fun two hours.

The action pieces are very stylish and effective, but the movie is not all action.  Hanna is more of a coming of age story about a young girl.  Albeit, this girl is an assassin with no social skills; and was bred to be something special.

Is Hanna an art movie with too much action?  Maybe it’s an action movie that’s more artistic than the average Jason Statham movie?  Either description is accurate, but we viewed it as more of the later.

Hanna is enjoyable for what it is, but isn’t a typical mancave movie.  It’s an action movie that your snooty art house friends can enjoy too.
