It’s great to see the growth that JapanFest Atlanta has had over the past years. Our children have enjoyed the festival for the past three years and the older they get the more fun they have. This year will be the best yet for them because in the past year they’ve both discovered Pokémon. It’s because of that we’ve accepted that Anime Village, in addition to our previous year’s go-to fun spots will be frequented.
First off let’s address the elephant in the room. Japan Fest is not merely for people who speak Japanese, have been to Japan or are Japanese. Do you like anime? Do you like great food? Do you like a fun time for the entire family? Do you have a child that likes Pokémon? Do you like live music? Sumo wrestling? Do you want to meet the voice behind Sailor Moon? JapanFest Atlanta is so much fun for the entire family that it’s an event that our oldest son starts mentions as one of the favorite things that he does in the summer.
The food court at Japan Fest is as close to eating in Japan as you’ll get without having a passport stamp. They have many dishes that I’ve only seen in Japan there, as well as the ones that you’re likely to request at your local Japanese restaurant. Hint: don’t forget about the baked goods. Check out the Sweet Hut to sample some of the things that you’d really eat when you visit Japan. If you really want to try test your local flavor try natto. It’s a soybean based treat that polarizes taste buds all over Japan, some love it, while some people hate it.

Do you know your koto from your shimasen? They both have the traditional sound of Japan and are utterly beautiful to listen to. Koto master Yumi Kurosawa will be on hand to play songs on the koto, which resembles a 6” slide guitar with 13 strings.
Have you been to EPCOT and visited the Japanese Pavilion? If so, you might have seen Matsuriza Taiko. They’re a traditional Japanese drum group that is breathtaking to watch. Big, drums from Japan, play in near synchronicity with passion and power. EPCOT will miss their presence when they’re at Japan Fest, so don’t miss this opportunity to catch them live.
The app. Download the JapanFest Atlanta app as that will let you see the day’s schedule up to the minute. You can plan your walking route and check off what you really want to see. Hint: visit the food area in mid afternoon or before 11:00 AM to avoid long lines. It’s also advisable to purchase your ticket in advance. This will save you lots of time and all but eliminate any time that you have to spend in line to get into Infinite Energy Arena.
