It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! is silly children’s music for the under 6 set

It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! is a storybook and music CD from The Secret Mountain. This is a good example to point out the difference between children’s music and kindie. The vast majority of the music we review here is kindie, music that is good for children, but also has pop sensibilities, music or humor that will appeal to adults. It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! is children’s music that kids 6 and under will enjoy.

The book and CD have 10 songs, all about animals, mainly cats and dogs, plus a couple cows and a mouse or two. Some of the songs are lullabies that won’t do parents any favors who are trying to avoid the afternoon sandman. Most of the songs are just silly ditties about animals, counting animals, listing reasons why you love animals and so on.

The book has some really cute illustrations of what the overall animal is doing in each song. For the longer songs, like HolyCow! there are a couple of pages dedicated to each song. For the young readers this allows for more time for them to read along to the music.

I thought that our 6 year old would be too old for this, but he really seems to like it. He’ll ask for certain songs by number and then request the book so that he can read along to the lyrics. This was surprising because I thought our 4 year old would be more attracted to the music. He likes some of the songs, but tires of the younger skewing one and screams forth his request from the back seat.  The parent in me thinks that the older one only ‘likes’ it because the younger one doesn’t though.

If you have a child 6 or younger and they like silly songs about animals then It’s Raining Cats and Dogs! is the release for you. This is children’s music that’ll get them through the mommy’s morning out years.  It’s not the kindie that you’ll listen to when the kids aren’t around, but it’ll please the very young set and serve as inspiration for those elementary school musicals.
