Explorer Academy is an ongoing mglit series that weaves in non-fiction globetrotting adventure travel, STEM smarts, and aspects of a family quest. Our protagonist, Cruz Coronado attends a prestigious school where 23 other kids from around the world study and learn the art of becoming explorers. It’s here where you can all but hear Miss Frizzle saying something motivational about questioning the process, outcome, or possibility as to how something can occur. I’ll be honest, I forget what she used to say, but it was a catchphrase that made her students reach further intellectually. I need a phrase like that for my students. The seventh book in the series is out and we’re hosting a giveaway for all of the Explorer Academy books. This giveaway ends soon, so double-time it on those responses.
Explorer Academy: The Forbidden Island is the culmination of the adventures that the team has encountered. Coronado has learned snippets of his family’s history and now it’s time to discover precisely what his lineage has done. That will also point him in the direction of the future, and most importantly it’ll solve the very pressing, and dangerous issue of who has been out to get him. “Get him” is a vague term, but in this case it’s been the bane of his existence, trying to stop any manner of progress or thwarting progress on a mission. This has been targeted and in The Forbidden Island, he finally learns what it’s all about.
a Rafflecopter giveawayExplorer Academy has weaved travel from places like Petra, Iceland, China, and every ocean in between while looking for clues. There are also riddles and games for the readers to dive into also if they’re the first-person puzzle type. As an upper-elementary through middle school book series, Explorer Academy is thorough, fun stuff. It balances the emotional side of the quest and doesn’t get too preachy on the eco-elements while mixing in enough mystery and action to keep those ages wanting more. Think a book that’s briefer than Charlie Thorne, that’s more grounded in STEM and reality and you’ve got this series that’ll fly with geo-STEM curious kids.
The Explorer Academy book series and its final entry, The Forbidden Island is by Trudi Trueit and available on National Geographic Kids.
