Board books represent a special time in a child’s life. Parents don’t realize it at the time; but they’ll come to associate board books that their children liked with that child as they get older. An example of this is the fact that we still have many of the board books that our children enjoyed when they were crawlers or in pre-k. Five Little Thank-Yous is a board book by Cindy Jin with illustrations by Dawn M. Cardona. It’s published on Little Simon Books and is just the sort of Thanksgiving book that crawlers through pre-k will enjoy for a number of reasons.
The book is small and hand shaped. It’s about the size of my hand and those small children will love the unique shape and the fact that they can carry it around without effort. Those kids will come into the Thanksgiving meal carrying the book and it’ll all but invite older people to read it to them.
Five Little Thank-Yous also has the expectations that one has with board books. The pages are impossibly thick. Go ahead, chew on me kid, it’ll take you three seasons to get through me and by next Thanksgiving your teeth will be here and the season of teething is nigh, the book says.
Is it possible that board books have gotten stronger since our kids were reading them? That’s possible because the pages in Five Little Thank-Yous are difficult for an adult to bend. I know that’s all but issuing a challenge to crawlers out there to destroy it. But if you haven’t seen board books in a while this is a great example of a very durable book that’s meant for small children.
Every other line in the book rhymes. The rhyming stanzas and the fact that smaller words are used will drive home the sounds that the letters produce. Recently we read a board book that didn’t have rhymes and that absence was obvious in children’s enjoyment of the book.
The background colors in Five Little Thank-Yous are bright and full of movement. We see kids throwing leaves, eating, cooking, petting dogs and enjoying family time. Virtually every age and color is represented in the book so it’ll be a natural fit for anyone who picks it up.
