Rhyming is the stuff of sight word books. Fans of Bobs’ and Tweets don’t agree with that look. This is a series that our eldest has loved for years. His copy of Trick or Treat is loaded with tears. Each entry is loaded with sight words and funny pictures. For kids through second grade, like those who might be struggling to read, this could be quite the beneficial mixture.
The fact is that Bobs and Tweets Scout Camp! is one of the few books that cross the entire spectrum of elementary school. The illustrations by Kristy Caldwell are so bright and vivid they draw in younger, emerging readers. While those pre-k students won’t be able to read the entire book, there are dozens of sight words for them to practice with.
The fact that the words are presented in the same pattern, with end words that rhyme each time will also ease their step towards chapter books. Bobs’ and Tweets Scout Camp! tells a story and is spread out over 10 chapters. Older readers, like those in third grade or those second graders that are good readers, should be able to read it without any assistance.
In my case, our fourth grader was still looking forward to reading it. The fact that he was eager to read Scout Camp! was a little surprising because it’s the kind of book that he can easily read. This is his reading comfort food. It tells a fun, quickly paced story and featured characters that he remembered from the last book.
Our second grader is reading a couple levels below where he should be. We’re not panicking or forcing him into anything. We are providing him a steady diet of books that are in the subjects that he likes. He likes surreal and funny. One of the things that he enjoys reading now is Fly Guy. He can read those books easily.
We’ve learned that it’s only when we have to intercede and attempt to assist him that he gets frustrated. When he get flustered or feels us hassling him for a word he shuts down completely. I know, welcome to the world kid, but we’re building his confidence so that he wants to read.
Next up in his reading queue is Bobs’ and Tweets Scout Camp! It checks off all of the things needed for this, and many other readers. It’s funny and has a cast of wonderfully relatable characters. The art is funny and draws in those pre-k kids all the way through the nursing home. Because it is a chapter book, this is big kid reading. However, it also has the rhyming fun that makes it easier, and in our child’s case, possible for them to read it without throwing visual daggers our way. A bonus for the parents is that Bobs’ and Tweets Scout Camp! retails for $5.99.
