Adventure Time, #TheUltimateAdventure succeeds on every level

(spoiler free review of Adventure Time, The Ultimate Adventure) Television series finales are a tricky thing. That is, assuming that it’s a loved series that’s coming to an end. If it’s not, then it’ll trickle off into a Trivial Pursuit answer to the Television category. A loved show is special and precarious because everybody wants you to succeed. Adventure Time is ending its ten year run with an epic 44-minute series finale. The series finale to Adventure Time, The Ultimate Adventure airs on Cartoon Network on September 3 at 6PM ET.

In an almost unprecedented move, Adventure Time, The Final Seasons DVD is arriving in stores and available for download on September 4. You can also preorder Adventure Time The Finale Soundtrack on digital and vinyl. This has over 20 songs there were featured in the series finale. That soundtrack will be available sometime in October.

Adventure Time is a stunning show that redefined television and animation. It’s impossible to look at any other animated show that’s debuted after Adventure Time and not see its influence. The fact that each Adventure Time episode is only 11 minutes further compounds how influential, unique and special the show is.

The series finale to Adventure Time, The Ultimate Adventure, does the show justice for its fans and casual viewers alike. It’s as good of a series finale as Breaking Bad was for Walter White, minus the shape shifter dog named Jake. After watching it once I watched all of the episodes from season 10 and the finale again. Except this time I cried.

I didn’t mean to cry. I was just watching it with the kids and this strange, salty liquid started running out of my eyes. That’s the subtle charm that Adventure Time has been weaving the past eight years. I can’t think of any episodes that I saw that were laugh-out-loud funny. There were some that featured great songs, incredibly creative story lines and fabulous stories. But there wasn’t a single episode that made me laugh as much as a great one from The Simpsons.

Adventure Time is not that show and The Final Adventure finds a new tale to tell. It’s one that introduces a new character, features a kiss between characters, brings back a couple that fans will remember and digs deeper into some characters that have been on the show for years. This was fabulous television and great viewing. It wraps up Adventure Time in a nice, music filled bow, but leaves room for a feature film, should they ever want to make one.

The Final Adventure is one that you’ll want to see again. Fans of the show will want to see it again immediately after they view it the first time. It’s satisfying and happy; all the while being a true ‘ending’ for some really great characters you might not have realized that you cared so much for.
